But you didn't include how many eggs were going to the family to eat every week. I wouldn't mind selling enough eggs (when I have more hens) so that it pays for all the eggs my daughter's family and I would eat. I, too, enjoy it. And my 96 yr old mother enjoyed watching all the chickens from my cameras I gave her access to. 😊

Thanks for watching! To answer your question the only eggs we had as a family were cracked or small eggs. I never had enough eggs in my market.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Very informative video. We have laying hens & raise meat chickens. You are right...a lot of work, minimal return, but also intrinsically worthwhile & satisfying...consumer support of local ag producers/products is key for all of us to know where our food is coming from & for sourcing wholesome, delicious food! That's what keeps us motivated to keep the layers & poultry production...it's amazing to be part of producing wholesome & delicious food! I can relate to much of what you shared on the egg production & sales...similar experiences here...we're in Southeast Ohio. Many blessings!

I would tell the customers who want their eggs washed to wash them when they get home. I would not take orders or even answer questions about availability.

in the fall and winter you need too supply the hens supplemental lightening in the form of a solar lighting on a timer switch hens need 14 hours of light per week too be in full production
@BK_Farm_Fresh

We allow some artificial lighting during the shorter months but due to the variety of chickens we have on our farm egg production still drops.

I hope you would choose instead to allow them this natural rest time. After all, they are not machines, but living creatures.

I think you could easily raise your price to at least 6 or 7 per dozen. Good quality eggs at the grocery store in my area go for 7, 8, and even 10 per dozen. I gladly pay 7 or 8 for high-quality eggs. Especially if you cant keep up with demand, raise your price.

My neighbors around my place won't pay no more than $3.00 a dozen. They would just go to the store. It's not worth raising chickens for customers like that.

You may have said and I missed it but how many layer hens do you have to produce 20doz a week? Keep up the good work. Love from Australia

We had 100 hens but not all of them were great layers. About 50 hens where good layers. We also had to account for cracked eggs as well.

Great video and info. A thought. If you increase each cartone to $6.00 you make $20.00 more per week. In 6 months (26 weeks) you will double your profit. $520.00 more. Just my opinion. I have give consideration to sell ours at $6.00 per dozen.

You’re not selling a dozen eggs a week for six dollars now not when they’re like two dollars for an 18 pack at the store

@@matthewwhite7400 the only good thing that I can say about FDA regulated eggs is because of all of the codes and restrictions. I know this because a cousin. Owns a chicken house with 9000 hens and sell eggs to Walmart and I’m family and not even allowed to walk in the building. The three workers that work there have basically been there since they started and for the most part where hazmat suits which I think is crazy, but it is what it is. I bought 50 hens from him last year & gave my aunt 40 and brought home 12 and I brought home about a dozen from an auction of specialty breeds. And I never thought I would get into it like I am, but chickens is life now. Raising and breeding my own now. And got some funky chickens I certainly do. lol I have quite a few but they’re all pets to me the best pets I’ve ever had that you can actually feed and they feed you back. It’s quite amazing experience really so just say the least they’re all spoiled rotten and get treated like gold around here.

Thanks for the comment! We have experimented with that in the past and may try in the future. The issue we had with that was over 50% of our hatched birds were roosters. Almost all of our ducks we have were hatched though.

The way I look at it is that you are getting paid to have a better and healthier product for you and your family. You’re getting money just for doing your day to day chores
@BK_Farm_Fresh
@BK_Farm_Fresh 6 күн бұрын
Yes, that is one way to look at it. At the same time because of the life style agriculture brings with it we are choosing to have to get up everyday and earlier to tend to our farm chores. They wouldn't be day to day chores without the farm. Thanks for you comment!

Eat, Sleep, Farm, Repeat.. No doubt... I hatch all my own chickens. I raise Black Australorp and White leghorns.. the Australorp hardboiled eggs peel without a hitch over the leghorns.. This was one of the greatest discoveries I have have ever made. I love hardboiled eggs but hate an egg that gets destroyed when trying to peel off the shell. I thought it was about how you cooked them, but found out different. It's the breed. Amazing. Best tip ever for raising chickens that lay through winter better and hard times.. Hatch the eggs from those chickens... Breed the best looking roosters back to the mother and produce offspring hens that lay like clockwork.. it actually work. Don't listen to none of that BS about inbreeding. That is how it has been done for centuries.. selective breeding and culling the undesirables for breeding purposes. After 5 years of doing this I have a strong laying flock. I put the hens alone in their separate cages to find out who is laying and who isn't. Once you get yerself setup to where you can do that you will be dialed in. Also put a light in the coop when the hours get below 12 hours a day.. add hours to the morning so it does not interfere with their roosting.. or if they sleep on the ground, so they can get settled for the night with a normal sunsetting event.

So, the secret to perfect hardboiled eggs lies in the breed of the chicken? Who would've thought!
