Homesteading is HARD work! We moved to a homestead (much smaller than yours) 2 years ago and we love living here, but haven't been able to do a fraction of what we had planned. I'm was hoping to be able to earn some money from it but setting up everything is taking lots of time and resources. You guys are doing amazing and can be really proud of what you have done and learnt so far. I look forward to seeing all the changes you do to make it less work! I'm from Western Cape, South Africa 🎉 and love seeing what other South African homesteaders are doing 😊

Thank you 🙂, we set very high expectations for ourselves. We planned out all sorts of things, we were so excited to have a section to plant out flowers, trees and all kinds of vegetation but we never got to it. We definitely did think that at this time the farm would bring in an income but it has been the opposite. We have decided to focus on using what we have first and prioritising what needs to be done. We are realising that managing expectations is important. We are now working on creating 'pockets of peace' around our home so we start feeling happy to be here. .

Love the videos, remember homesteading is a joiney, it takes time. WRT to red peppers, when they strt to go from green to red u can pick them and leave in a sunny spot to finish ripening.

Thank you Sharon, we really appreciate the support 🙂. You did advise us to take it slow and we should have listened 😆. We are looking forward to the next few weeks doing what we love doing and making this farm our home.

Goats need us to have a more secure perimeter, or else those escape artists will be eating the neighbours flowers 😅

Hey guys!! I know you two are just overwhelmed.. lol.. take your time and breathe and draw out what you want to do in the section you want to work with 1st. It will work. Take your time.. It will come together.. We are going to be out in ours too.. but do your planning.. You guys are going to be ok. You made great pointers as well. Don't over whelm yourselves because, you will not want to be there.. lol.. it is beautiful and you have a beautiful vision.. have a great day and it was great to see you two again..

Treating it like a job makes it get old, real fast. We are in the process of having many kids, we do this to give them an old fashioned childhood that we never had ourselves. Learning real skills, values, seemingly completely lost in our generation.. and enough land to get lost on.😅 About weeds, we did a controlled burn on a section of older blackberry thickets past week, the goats got right to work in the eating the young stems! I just got back from another day running electric fence wire… worst allergies of my life in the middle of all that in bloom season! Wishing for rain to ease it off.

Mulching and tarping is the easiest way to keep the work down. I used to try to avoid it and now I realize I need it.

Thank you for your honesty about how hard transformation a property can be. Good idea have the vegetable garden next to the house. Can you lease parts of the farm to others who share your dreams? This would bring in a little income and the land will be productive? I wish you luck. in New Zealand we have Wolfers who work the land in Lou of free rent while they travel. Just ideas
@millennialhomesteader
@millennialhomesteader Жыл бұрын
Thanks, having the garden nearby is definitely our game changer 😂. We have definitely considered looking to lease portions, there are concerns regarding safety and access. Glad to have community in new Zealand, unfortunately the Wolfer community is not so big in this area but im sure there would be some takers if we put ourselves out there.

We missed you too 😀, there is always work on the homestead so it is easy to feel like nothing was done. Homesteading is definitely more mental than we thought, our focus now is to make it feel more homely and enjoyable so we enjoy our journey.

Missed you 🤗 the best part about homesteading is you are always learning, with every passing year you know your land better, you adapt you adjust you continue, but most of all you enjoy ❤ someone gave me this advice once: always start closest to your home and work outward. PS cut grass is a great mulch
@millennialhomesteader
@millennialhomesteader Жыл бұрын
We really wish we had started home and worked outward. This makes such great sense and explains why we felt so tired after a while. We never spent much time making 'home base' enjoyable and fun so we had to get out and find joy in our market garden. Home base is now the focus and we won't move forward until we have it under control 😊.
