Totally. I’ve always been one to give them responsibility and not be chasing them every 5 mins. Michael is on hand too. We can’t do much for a few days because of the rain just before we left.

To me this is the best vidio on utube well explained farming practices, no stressy stuff even in wet times, I've been in farming over 40yrs and still learning from this, thank you for sharing

Enjoy Portugal 🇵🇹 😊 Drill is very interesting. Tom Lamb has a video just out with a device to check the air out of each coulter. The Case has a nice note pulling that saber drill.😊

Interesting to see the two drills at work. It’s also fascinating to see the two different approaches to farming, at one of the busiest times of the arable year, with James Peck being stressed directing, operations in a wet field and you are able to do the same from a sunny beach on holiday.

He’s got far more to drill and more staff to look after, I’m not sure I’d be away in his shoes but, with JD ops centre tracking machinery and being in contact by phone, most things are possible. I don’t get stressed too much about the weather, you can’t change it, as long as every opportunity is grasped when it is dry. I’ve a good team with Reuben and Tom and ‘cousin Michael’ 😊 supporting too. I did speak to James a week ago and ask if he wanted to join us! Someone from Liverpool and Hereford are coming tonight!

Haven't seen soil that dry for nearly 4 weeks. Our agronomist reckons only 40% of his autumn crops have been planted and he doesn't think much more will be planted. It's worse than last year!!!

16.6 cm which I think is ideal, any wider and blackgrass gets too much room to grow.

We used to make use of the services of aerial crop duster to optimise glyphosate application with moist soils and wheelings to combat volunteer/weed emergence in South Africa 🇿🇦when I was a boy. Do arable farmers here use this method here in the Uk 🇬🇧?
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard Ай бұрын
No, it was banned years ago because of damage to wildlife and the surrounding trees and vegetation. Quite rightly so in my opinion.

When you spray off with glyphosate, the spray is in contact with the plants. How does the pre em spray work, if the plants haven’t appeared yet?
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard Ай бұрын
Pre ems work by sealing the soil surface and stop the plants from germinating. The mode of action of a residual herbicide (pre em) is different to a contact herbicide like glyphosate.

Afternoon Andrew, I truly hope you are having a well deserved break, currently flitting between old and current videos, just so you are as confused as me lol That simba drill as you said, doing a great job on leveling the ground and losing the wheelings, however, is that your "light" land, certainly looked to have a good tilth My other question is in regards to the tyre, you said it was original, possibly 20 years old, as a caravan owner we have to change our tyres every 5 years apparently, regardless of the mileage, or it can affect our insurance if the unthinkable happened, just wondered if you had similar restrictions on agricultural trailers Once again, thank you for the update, even though you are having a break Take care Geoff

Looking at your capulet beans and their drying I suggest this may well become a regular problem. I suggest that the sorting might well comprise a colour camera over and air bed to release more of the beans from the mould. Colour cameras were coming onto industry when I retired. You would then be left with beans and some mould which could be graded with the mould partially dried and the beans finally dried at the end. With the low growth there will be a likelihood of mould in your gathering of the crop and the beans being a new crop the recovery from harvest may have to be revisited from current crops. You as a farmer will have greater enthusiasm and desire to make well of your harvest than a manufacturer who will only pay you on the recovered crop after delivery. As with industry you will have to do best with the product as is not as desired. It might be that blowing across an aeration bed would remove light chaff etc. It may well be that with this crop the sorting operation might have a different order from convention. As ever the use of air as a sorting format is a total loss operation i.e. the air is irrecoverable whereas hydraulic say is a recoverable format. Always hard to teach apprentices that as they always want to turn up the air for more immediate action!
