I did the steering box on a W-6 at one time. Filled it with a slurry of oil and grease. Best steering W-6 we ever had. On the A you should be able to get away with grease. They use a worm on a worm wheel. The newer steering boxes like the W-400, W-450, 560, 660 tractors as well as the 9 series to 650 use a worm and a sector arm with a point and a double roller bearing. Those boxes need oil for the proper lubrication for the bearing. I'm not surprised that the A moved the coop. Loaded wheels and weights make a difference. Dad had a sloop loaded with wet bales. He pulled it with a John Deere D and it spun out part of the way. He got the W-4 with loaded wheels and weights, hooked onto it and the W-4 moved it all the way. Red Power!

It's funny you were saying about people calling 140w grease I have a farmall B we actually ted hay with for the 25 yrs we have ran corn head grease in the trans and rear end and drop boxes the tractor was side swiped years ago and welded back together by my grandfather and he packed it full up white lithium grease because it leaked as fast as you poured in the oil we cleaned all the lithium out of it and packed it full of corn head grease it's been running for years like that and it's gonna run till it doesn't anymore like that it works and it doesn't whine and it shifts pretty smooth. Sometimes when it's hot out and the tractor has worked all day the green corn head grease will seep out of the welds and we joke rhat it's the John Deere come through the red because we use the John Deere corn head grease that's green, We buy it by the pallet because we rebuild our combine head every year and usually use a few cases there and we repack the b once a year and we have a few gearboxes that won't hold oil any longer and to expensive to replace so we just pack them with corn head grease works slick kind of like duct tape for the farm.

@@FarmallFanatic I ran one as a kid and loved it, someday I will find another. Restoring a 806 right now, than a H which was never my favorite tractor. This one my dad bought new but the Korean War made him sell it, well he was in the Army. He sold it to my grandfather and it’s how he met my mom. The very tired H was given me by my uncle. He had parked it in a swamp, I put gas in it and a battery and drove it out. I bought another H for rims and tires that was advertised as locked up rear end and engine. Brake was stuck and water had run around threads in exhaust manifold. Had it running and driving in 15 minutes. Paid 250 for it at auction. Than I bought another one for parts but it’s also is a good runner. Now I have 3.

Don’t use normal grease on the steering box we in the cub community use either John Deere corn head grease which is 00 grease or I use Cotten head grease from tractor supply which is also a 00 grease.
