How to adjust the steering box on a Farmall Cub tractor to eliminate steering wheel play. We eliminated most of our steering wheel play without having to take off and disassemble the steering box.

If the ball joints are worn you can weld them up and regrind. The tie rod ends have a small nickle sized replaceable socket and the keepers in the end of the steering arms are part of the socket can be tightened, they are threaded. Just pull the cotter pins and give them a part turn and reinstall the pin. Our cub has been working on the farm since new in 1949, so the Tie rod arms were getting sloppy on the down shafts. We replaced the bushings and cleaned the shafts and then had the arms welded to the shafts at the top. Dont worry you wont wear out the new bushings again in another 100 years. Also check the metal plate that holds the two steering arms to the main arm coming from the steering box. Pull the two bolts and take a look some times a small crack forms and the plate spreads and the ball will be loose in the socket or the plate is worn and causes slop. It too can be welded up and reground.

Great Video! Thanks! What a time saver. Side Note! Whatever you do, don't use modern gear lube! It eats the Bronze/Brass! Take Care.

Now just get some shims for your ball joints or just remove some.
