I'm a UK 1957 Cub owner, have a friend in Ireland with one also. IH only has this recall in USA so got two sent to a Georgia resident friend who was coming over. Feel a lot safer now mine's installed.

the SHs and SMs and SMTAs came with the tall caps. the old caps also caused a vapor lock problem and caused the H to flood easily and the carbs to leak. there were 2 styles of small caps one was made for kerosene one for gasoline only dont mix them

I remember in the early 80s before they were merges with Case IH did have a recall for fuel caps for IH Gas tractors... I remember seeing an ad in one of the farm magazines of that day with a drawing of a NFE 655 or 706 Gas on it...

My neighbor told me about Navistar doing this last fall all I had to do was get the serial number of each tractor and he sent mine with his and we had new tall gas caps for free ! It took about a month to get them !

There where many days. Working ground in the summer.you could see and feel the gas vapors coming from the old style ..case sent dad 6 news ones .gave them serial numbers back than in the 80s..

Our one H, the 1941, still has the small cap on it. I believe it used to leak but we replaced the seal with an old innertube chunk and that stopped that. I don’t know if it has the venting issue or if someone fixed it, I haven’t had to refuel it yet while it’s hot but for now I plan to leave it. Wish the recall deal included diesel tractors so I could get rid of the mucked up cap on our MD.

For clarification regarding the new cap. The two major differences are, the new cap is triple baffled in an effort to keep fuel in the tank while allowing the tank to be vented. The other difference is there is a double catch feature so when the tabs that tighten the cap release completely, if there is pressure in the tank, the cap will not get get blown out of your hand. As to models covered, I got new ones for Grampa’s F-20 and Farmall B and my 656 Hydro. Any gas tractor IH built is covered, just need the serial number of your tractor. If one has never been claimed for it, you get the new triple baffle cap. There was also a tool released to reshape the neck if it was distorted. If you need one there are still some floating around at dealerships and some old IH mechanics might just happen to have one.

Yep all my Farmalls from the h-350-666-560-656-756 and 856 and 966 were changed gas and diesel so thanks for sharing it and its been and ongoing longer than I have been alive just about lol. At lot of good dealers would just hand them out and I would suggest you do the update to your 756 Radiator Cap if it has not been done they were also switched out to the same kind the 66 86 series used. Funny thing is on the 86 and 88 series we had the old style cap still and it never gives a problem but they also have a breather line installed running from top to bottom

I seem to remember Ford having a similar recall in the mid 80's for the N series tractors up to and including the current models, Makes me wonder how mant tractor manufacturers were effected

yep, i had fuel boiling issues , added a heatshield and it worked out great. the ethanol in the gasoline tends to boil out before the gas :/

I remember a time my mom had a car that the fuel pump went out and the tank had to be dropped to replace it. Well, when the tank was put back in, the vent tube got crushed. You know something is bad when you go to open your gas cap and have a literal stream of gasoline come flying out with a reach of a good six to seven feet from the car. That could have ended a lot worse if that stream of gas were to land on a hot engine. If you can imagine shaking up then opening a bottle of champagne, that is kind of what it was like. Improper venting is no joke on gas tanks.

The tall cap shown in this video that was purchased is also the old style. The cap taken off the tractor in the video has a single flange to lock it down. The new caps from Navistar have a second flange that keeps the cap from blowing off when it is turned part way. That is part of the safety feature. Not all tall caps are the correct caps.
