When ever I see cutting torches lay on their sides I have relapses of my past. I worked for an Elevator co. and down in the basement of a new building going up I was squatting in the door ready to leap down into the pit, remembered I didn't have my tape measure, still squatting I turned leaned on one knee to get it out of my tool box. then heard the bang! huge hissing sound as the Oxegen tank fell or something fell on the regulator broke it off. and the tank took off along the floor through the block concrete wall past me and into the elevator shaft hitting the concret pit wall and taking out a huge chunk of it before it fell to the floor. Had I still been in the door. it would have caught me dead in the back and killed me. with that kind of force. Had an Angel on my shoulder that day Thank you Lord.

Pete, You may remember the old TV show "Lost In Space". You may remember the line (from the robot) "Danger Will Robinson DANGER". You should NEVER use an acetylene tank with it lying on it's side. If you need to lay it down, you can use it again AFTER leaving it to let several hours to let the acetylene settle in the tank. The acetylene tank is not an empty tank. It is loaded with a porous material that acts as a stabilizer for the acetylene. Using the torch with the acetylene tank on it's side can lead to possible catastrophic failure including an explosion at the regulator. Also The output regulator should NEVER, EVER be above 15 PSI. This can cause issues that could lead to an explosion as well.
@PeopleAlreadyDidThis
@PeopleAlreadyDidThis 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, and many others have said it below...the acetylene is diffused in acetone within the porous "sponge" to protect against spontaneous explosion. Not only will the acetone draw into the regulator and hose when the bottle is on its side, it can draw with the bottle vertical if the consumption rate is too great for the cylinder size.
@robertbrady5009
@robertbrady5009 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely correct!! I wanted to mention this also. You're supposed to have the acetylene standing and still for a good 45 minutes to let the acetone settle
@WIDESIDE72

When i saw the acetylene bottle laying down, I figured I wouldn’t be the only one to notice. Having a dad who was an oilfield/ pipeline welder for 40 years definitely has its benefits! Being a master electrician is pretty handy too. Wrenching on old farmalls is also a hobby if mine.

Loved the video. When I was a senior in high school. I took my grandpa's first tractor in to the Ag shop, and rescued it from sitting out in the weather and rusting away. It had been sitting for around 20 years. It was a 1942 Standard Oliver 70. It had quit running because one of the weights on the governor had come loose and then got caught in the camshaft gear and busted off the end of the camshaft, and busted some of the teeth. I was lucky that we had a neighbor that had the same tractor that had a cracked block that he let me take the parts off of it that I needed. I got it running the last week of school, and was able to drive it home. This video brought back a lot of memories.

Hello Pete, I just wanted to tell you, a long time ago I was told to never use acetylene gas from a bottle that is not vertical. The reason is the tank is filled with a liquid and when the bottle is on its side the liquid can come out of the bottle. But you do what ever you like. All the best, Edgar

Keep up the awesome videos! Quick tip, don't use acetylene tanks laying down. They're filled with acetone to stabilize them under pressure. If you open the tanks while tipped over and see a purplish flame from the torch it means you're sucking the acetone out which will turn the cylinder into a bomb.

Love the shop work.... And the dialogue about the workings of that engine. I know it'll be awhile but I'll be glad when it's starts up... I've never seen a engine like this. My Gramps told me back in the depression era, they had a reverse fuel system on the gas equipment. They would put coal oil in the main tank and a small gasoline tank to start up. Apparently, them old engines would run on the cheaper coal oil, but starting and stopping it required gasoline, which was higher in cost. Happy 2021 !

The basic technology of an engine hasn't changed much since the internal combustion engine was invented decades before. I have a lot of admiration for the early inventors that had to create everything from theory and common sense. They often didn't have anything to build upon, except their belief that something should work. I appreciate the tutorial style of the videos this gentleman has.

Jay Leno uses a non-water-based coolant in all his cars (some worth $16M) that he says eliminates cooling system corrosion. It’s more expensive than regular coolant, but lasts indefinitely and might be worth looking into for a vintage tractor like this. He talks about it on his channel “Jay Leno’s Garage.” So glad to see the project progressing. Please don’t feel like the GoFundMe means you have to drive, drive, drive the project forward. We know there’s still a farm to run! It also does my heart good to see you and your son working together. Take care.

When I work on my tractors and trucks, I always clean them (gently) prior to working on them, especially when having to disassemble components. Warm regards Doron

Hi Doron, since it's a complete disassembly I wasn't worried about dirt getting into places it shouldn't. The machine shop will clean the block and head as part of their work. To do a proper paint job, I'll be cleaning and painting most of the other parts individually.

Pete hasn’t expressed perfection to me,did you express perfection? I’m far from it also,but,there’s more than one way to skin a cat! We’ll just take this as Your Opinion.

absolutely true. the acetone will come out of the bottle if gas is withdrawn in horizontal position. best case you will wreck the seals in the regulator and the hoses, worst case you will blow yourself up. The torch usually pops and crackles when this happens so propably no harm done here, still dangerous though.

Interesting, I've never heard that before. I've used the torch a few times this way and never had an issue. Learn something every day!

@@JustaFewAcresFarm I've seen a few people do it and get away with it. However there are documented cases where this has led to a flashback or acetylene decomposition in the bottle. would be a sad end to this great rebuild series.

@@JustaFewAcresFarm definitely do not use it laying down!!!! You shouldn’t even use it for a day after being stood back up again. The acetone is in the tank to keep the gas stable. Your potentially creating a bomb.

You know it’s getting serious when the acetylene tank comes out lol

Having never worked on one of those... now I see why you didn't simply unbolt the fan from the crank snout to enable you to remove the fan shroud. Some oil absorbent diapers on the floor will make for a little easier clean up as they soak up the engine's oil/grease. Good to see Henry rolling up his sleeves and pitching a joke too. The nut didn't fall far from the tree.

Farmall and Deere overengineered their first diesels, they weren't sure how cheap they could build them and still have longevity, but they soon learned.

Great video series so far, well worth the donation! I'm not a professional but I like to do a lot of my own work. and you just reminded me about how much I hate working on dirty engines. Best wishes that the block is in good shape when they magnaflux it.
