My Boom Lift Broke Again! Fixing It & Then Doing a CRITICAL Job With It.

I have had to do a LOT of work on this machine since I bought it. I got it for a great price, but it's not seeming all that great now considering the time and money I've put in. It's never really run correctly, and I tackle that with many problems along the way. I clean the carburetor with an ultrasonic cleaner, adjust the carburetor, work on the telescoping chain and the boom, replace the coil and plug wires, replace the PCV valve, replace the crank sensor, the thermostat, the water pump, the coolant, the alternator. Phew! And there's more work yet to be done. IT NEVER ENDS! Good that I love fixing things! ;-). Oh, and then I do a VERY IMPORTANT job with it.

Here are a few thoughts. 1)Fuel pressure needs to be 5-60psi and when not in use should maintain at least 35psi. If it doesn't you have a fuel issue. 2)If it has an EGR valve and it is stuck open it will foul the starts and cold idle. 3)Vacuum leak. Pull the vacuum hose that is connected to the carb, if the idle stays the same you have a leak. If you can extent the hose and suck on it the idle should rise. 4)Timing issue. In the past someone changed the timing belt and it is off by a few teeth. If you have a timing light it should be 10°BTDC. The ECU could be retarding the timing to far for hard starts.

No way am I a full on mechanic and you obviously are but I have always experienced 4 cylinder gas engines to be ridiculously thirsty to start when cold. I wonder if he could pump the throttle vigorously if it would start right up..... Growing up in Maine back in the day (before EFI) that was routine for a cold start. Saves on the battery and the starter.

I was thinking the same, but also it could be the fuel reservoir canister, fuel filter, or fuel tank screen. But my guess is a vacuum leak or fuel check valve issue.

Fuel is not likely at all. The bowl was good on fuel when John opened up the carb to clean. EGR and vacuum leak are both very likely though. Timing, maybe. Runs too well to be off too much. However a belt that old may be stretched and in needs of changing.

It is hardest to start when cold. You need a rich mixture when cold. When you were filming down the carb throat the choke opened too fast. The initial richness disappears when that choke opens, and it dies. Choke closes, engine catches, air rushes in, choke opens, engine dies from being lean. Try adjusting the automatic choke. Love your humor and the seals!

Never liked automatic choke on any old cars i had it was always a problem, removed and changed to manual. Agree it doesn't seem to be working properly and not sure if there is a fuel enrichment circuit for cold start on this carb

Yeah, I noticed it to. There's something moving in the carburetor in time with the engine sound. It's most likely the automatic choke that's the problem here. It releases to easily.

Was going to say the same thing. Choke is flopping completely open and closed during cranking and as soon as the engine starts to fire it opens completely killing the engine. The MOST it should open once engine starts to fire is halfway and than gradually open completely as engine warms. This engine keeps firing intermittantly until the cylinders get warm enough to stay running.

It's been a while since I messed with carbs but I'm quite certain that "fixed in place" part that doesn't allow the choke to fully open should be a piston that uses the vacuum of the engine to help regulate the position of the choke working counter to the force of the bi-metal coil. Basically, the coil should have more than enough force to hold the choke closed by itself. From the vacuum hose that you removed while disassembling the carb there should be a passage to the back side of that piston and it will allow the built up vacuum caused by the closed choke valve to assist in opening the valve enough to allow enough air through to balance out the choke position. Once the coil heats up and loosens, this vacuum should be enough to pull the choke open and hold it.

That's my thinking too. Somebody ran the adjusting screw in all the way, and now the piston is jammed in the bore. The engine runs badly because it's at partial choke.

The greasing of the boom wear surfaces is a must. We (Firefighter) clean and regrease our ladder truck aerial every month. We have been complimented by the manufacturer on how little wear our ladders show verses many other departments. We use WD40 to clean the old grease off and then white lith all of the wear surfaces. Then blue (high pressure) grease all pivot points and any zircs.

John have you ever checked engine timing? All that black smoke and hard start could be attributed to not enough advance. Also have you inspected the timing belt to make sure static timing is correct? One last thing I would check would be fuel pressure?

I had a diesel that had this same problem .. after years of cranking on it for 1-3 minutes at a time I discovered that the contacts inside the ignition switch werent always connecting to "run" - so it would turn over and crank but the fuel solenoid wouldn`t actually let fuel out. I know its unrelated to your issue but you cranking on that brought back those memories, lol.

What a pain for you with that engine, I would do a compression test to rule that out and then figure out what electrical issues are happening. I would be doing whatever I can to get that reliable again, I am amazed at how versatile that lift is for all your projects, it really spoils you when it is working properly. Have you considered fitting an in line electric fuel pump and in line filter ? Appears to me that the valves of your lift pump are allowing fuel to run back to the tank ? An electric pump will prime the fuel line as soon as the ignition is switched on, great videos keep up the great work

Hi John it sounds like the hard start is a fuel problem. Not sure if you have an electric pump or mechanical pump. But try cycling the key 2 or 3 times with a delay of 2 to 3 seconds between cycles if its an electric pump. If it's a mechanical pump its my guess that it's on its way out, its weak. Also check to see if you have an inline check valve, it could be leaking back to the tank. It's hard to diagnose something when your not in front of it but it's where I would start. And on the length of videos, my preferred length is 20 to 30 min., but your videos are the exception. Your content is always interesting and they never feel as long as they are. Keep them coming just the way they are.

Pro tip with wheel speed and crank sensors from someone living in the rust belt. Heat the metal that it's sunk in enough to melt it and break it free, then do the screw and slide hammer trick. Also, give it a light coat of grease before you put the new one in, since aftermarket ones are junk and you'll probably be replacing it again in the future.

Great job getting everything working much better! I wonder if something as simple as a check valve for the fuel line would solve the issue? Fuel draining back to the tank and some evaporation of the bowl fuel might create the delay you are experiencing. Only other thing I could think to try would be using something to physically change the choke position(with the air filter off) while trying to do a cold start to see if that gives you another data point.

If you look closely, you could already see the back of the alternator sparking at 31:48. A few things considering the hard start issue: 1) engine could be flooding while starting considering the black smoke and it is not responding to starting fluid 2) check the cam timing 3) if no hydraulic lifters, check valve lash 4) the starter can pull too much amps causing weak or no spark. Put your hand over the top of the carburetor while cranking the ice cold engine. Spread your fingers slightly or tip your hand up off the carb top just a little bit after it fires. You are essentially acting as the choke then. If that helps, you know where your problem lies. On a car thd choke stays shut fully until the engine starts. Then there’s a vacuum actuator that pulls the choke open just a tiny bit to maintain a good fuel mixture. That actuator is adjustable so you can set it for optimal idle performance on a cold start. I’m a former automotive drivability specialist. I’ve repaired thousands of carburetors. That choke plate should not be fluttering open on startup. Once the engine is warmed up, the choke should not be closing on a restart after 20 minutes either.

A couple things, I noticed you didn't attempt to adjust the float inside the carburetor, try adjusting it! Also, I think you may also check the fuel filter and pump. Replace them !!

Agreed... and perhaps the long crank is due to the fuel level dropping in the fuel bowl (for whatever reason) and the pump has to fill it back up again. Or it may be flooding (from fuel level being too high or fuel leaking down into the engine. Either way, I'd verify correct fuel level. That thing should start and purr after a revolution or two... the base engine has been around for 50 years.

If the carb was that dirty and you had to replace the fuel line you should always start with the tank and make sure that's not the source of the smeg in the carb. Pump and filters would be next on the list. If the maintenance has been that bad it's probably time to change all the ignition parts, all the other filters belts and hoses along with all the fluids and other minor tweaks parts. As for greasing the boom chain, it seems a lot like an oversized motorcycle chain so a similar procedure of glopping on a big wad of grease and cycling it might distribute it to the parts you can't reach. I also think that the engineers who design these should be required by law to spend a month disassembling them and building them back.

I get the cheap insurance angle, but no need to go crazy with the parts cannon either For all we know the engine has cracks or needs rebuild, and there's a ton of em sitting in junk yards with relatively low wear

I think your camera showing the choke operation was very telling. You could see it fluttering while you were trying to start. It should be solidly seated closed, affecting a proper choke. It seemed to me to be opening slightly then widely as the engine turned over. If that choke plate were held closed, as it should be on a cold start, it would help. I have an 82' tall radio tower I erected at the end of my shop to put a point to point microwave antenna on for interwebs. Sure wish I had one of these machines every time I want to change my flags. It would be a lot easier than climbing that sucker hauling everything I need and wearing fall protection.

That would be cool, but this is a simple 50 year old engine design... which makes me wonder if going back to a conventional distributor might be worthwhile (if the hole for the distrib is still there... think it is... think there is a crank/cam position sensor in that hole?). The automotive version would've had port fuel injection along with that distributorless ignition system (DIS). It seems a little cluster-eff-esque to have a carb on that engine and yet retain the DIS.

@@mikemiller8170 John, replaced the crank sensor in this video. Actually a cam sensor is used on some models, but mostly on models with EFI. Ford used the EDIS-4 module for the ignition timing, If this does not work correctly timing problems occur, what would explain the hard start condition and shutting down from the engine under load.

A small inline fuel filter just prior to the carb, and anti-seize on the sensor and various bolts may make future you a little happier.

I for one am truly grateful for sharing your misery. The grief your machine causes you allows me guidance if I have to repair my Genie S-80. My machine is a 2006, but so far everything works properly and because it's a diesel, I don't have that niggling problem of dealing with a carburetor.

3:23 the heating element is called a bi-metallic strip. It’s two layers of metal that expand at different rates so it uncoils and turns.

There is an alternator and starter rebuilding shop within 15 miles of my house. I've used them for decades. Exact remanufactured quality you get from parts store for under $60. Drop it off in the morning and pick up in the evening. May be worth locating a shop like that near you for future use.

Good stuff John. I think I would consider modifying that fan shroud so that it could be taken off in two pieces. Cut the top and bottom and make a bayonet slide with some sheet metal and a couple of sheet metal screws top and bottom, then one only has to remove the part of the shroud towards the outside to get to the fan and water pump. Great video thumbs up.

Add a little electric fuel pump and a fuel filter. The pump is just to check if you have sufficient fuel at start, you can remove it if no difference. The filter is almost a must have for something that old that's been sitting even if you replaced the lines.

I wonder if running it without a thermostat overheated anything and warped the block or heat just enough that it’s losing compression but not use it water. I’d do a quick compression test.

Good idea to check grounds, but he did mention that it's easier to restart once started. Although even the restarts seem crappy to me.

Ground or some electric issue, maybe some wire insulation has rubbed broken. I would take alternator belt off and see is it a huge load when you start it from basket. If there is a near short somewhere, it could put a lot load into alternator.

You need boom grease on the boom sections where it makes contact with the pads. This is a regular maintenance item. It should never be dry

I’ve got smart plugs that control my Christmas lights and I can see the power consumption. It’s about $3 a week to run all my lights indoor and outdoor. They are a scheduled from sunset to 1am so there on for about 8 hours a day everyday.

@@arthur3537 My lights are split on two different setups so im able to see half of there usage so I just double the known watts for a close approximate . My rear tree pulls 194watts, so lets say another 200 for the front tree, then 266 for half of my outside display so add another 300 of the other half. that comes out to just under 1000watts. My going rate for power ranges but the daily average from comed is never more then 8 cents per kWh. a few days ago it was 1.1 cents kWh average. Last night my average cost kWh is 5.63 cents over a span from 4pm to 1am. So if my math is right im doing about 1kw of lights per hour at $0.0563 per kWh it cost me 56 cents to run the lights all night. minus 2 hours of the 194 watts as the rear tree is off at 11pm so my total is around $0.48 for last night. If you google "comed live rates" there website shows current, past, and future projection for kWh pricing plus some averages. the stats I have from my two smart plugs say the daily average from my rear tree is 2.0730 kWh and half of my front outside lights are 2.1995 kWh weekly total usage rear tree = 12.4382 kWh weekly total usage outside half = 13.1970 kWh Where do you live that has such high electricity prices?

According to boom lift engine behavior symptoms the exhausting system is blocking. To check this theory just disconnect the exhausting pipe from the engine and try to use it without. And thank you for your videos. I am from Ukraine and your channel helps me to switch from a war background to peaceful issues.

I have cut one piece fan shrouds in half to facilitate removal and re-install....the next time you need access to stuff you can easily remove just the half that's interfering with access to fan removal, or water pumps, belts etc.
