Isn't it strange that solar farms always seem to be built on prime farmland, rather than wasteland or rough terrain? It seems that solar works better by removing food production ground from the mix.
@jamesmurney1374 Жыл бұрын
Good productive farm ground should be one of the last places solar goes. The many, many acres of parking lots, warehouse roofs and the like that should be used first, and they are closer to demand
@tiredoldmechanic1791 Жыл бұрын
Isn't it strange that the people who use a lot of electricity are the ones who complain about how the electricity is provided? They are the same ones who would be screaming bloody murder if the power company limited the amount of power they could use. If the land is so valuable for farming, why was it purchased by a power company instead of a farmer? Many solar farms also raise sheep and goats to keep the grass mowed.

I hear you on the solar panel deal! My siblings and I had a oil well at the beginning of the Boom in Western North Dakota. When the prices dropped , conveniently a tool dropped in the bottom of the hole and they couldn't fish it out but they had work over rigs sitting on it with nobody on the rigs just to make it look good. Finally they abandoned the site. The only reason I can think that they drilled on that one was the state of North Dakota has the mineral rights on the other half of that section . While the work over rigs were sitting there, my siblings and I received countless inquiries if we were interested in the surface mining of coal, windchargers, and solar farm.? Our answers were you've already started shutting down the coal fired power plants in North Dakota so we know the coal isn't going to be an issue. Our major income is renting Our Land to raise cattle. With roads all over the place and the props falling off the wind farm. "Oh that doesn't happen", they said! I says I've seen pictures of the pit where your fiberglass / composite whatever props are laying in piles and they're covering them up. Now let's talk solar farm! Panels absorb sunlight, underneath the panels is shade. Grass and Alfalfa do not grow well without sunlight!!!! Do you need to hear anymore, so quit sending us this crap. The rich corpse and individual investors used to use the politicians in their pocket to claim eminent domain. Now they just throw money after money after money at it. It's getting really hard to be proud of our country when you have so many greedy , blankety , blank , blank , blanks, having their way with us!!!!!!!

So I'm always looking at how I can rework contracts for the better. Currently a customer base of 80 to sell to and that grows weekly. It's not all in the field as some may think. Brian, very interesting on the record keeping and the computer records on the application of fertilizer and type of seed and ag chemicals used and being able to see how well your yields end up in regards to field conditions, weather and farm practices as to how well you come out in the end and then be able to see how you might make improvements the next time. Hopefully you will have a successful season in 2023.
@jvin248 Жыл бұрын
Given chemical and fertilizer cost run ups ... are you experimenting with Regenerative Agriculture techniques? I'm going that way so I'm especially interested in the topic. Someone ought to tell Gates & crew that grazing is a possibility under panels while farming in the strips between panels is an option too -- even if prairie wild flowers and bee hives. They'd have plenty of power to run livestock electric fencing ;)

Junk in, junk out. Data makes the world go round. Whenever I had to go to a customer location for a repair, the first thing I did was pull up the engine trend data to see exactly what was occurring before failure and if other units could be effected. It saved my butt numerous times, showed that we as a company provided broad services and could schedule repairs prior to breakdown. A good field service tech can make or break your business. Having seed and fertilizer sales people that get to see a broad range of issues and make recommendations keeps you going back to them, i'e Cat, JD, Ag Leader.

To me that looks like the most fun part. I do that kind of analytical work typically for large organisations. Is this an underserved market for specialists to come in and help with analytical services? Most of the farmers I know are not computer people... they can get their phone working and Netflix but that's about the extent of it. So then the question is do they value the service enough to pay for it / is it worth paying for?

I do not have a problem with Solar, my problem is with the application. Would it not make it more green to install the panels somewhere that already has the infrastructure to support it? In looking at what is being done in other countries I see a lot of panels installed on top of large buildings. These would already have most of the very non-green construction done. I can only assume that by using farm land it is the easiest and cheapest way to do it not necessarily the best or greenest.

Ease of access or use is a big indicator on how something is used. Do you purchase different hybrids for different fields or go for the "one fits all" approach? Do you measure seed handling efficiency throught the process? From bag/tote of seed->loading planter->planting->harvesting -> storing-> delivery to plant. I've always curious to understand how much seed/product is lost throughout that process and if farmers measure that or not .

Brian, which do you dislike more, solar panel farms, wind turbine farms or nuclear generating plants? For me it is nuclear plants because they have no solution for disposing of the radioactive (for generations) used "rods" that is guaranteed to be safe, not to mention the risk of an accident in the plants. I do think the wind farm towers are more offensive to the landscape and will be far more expensive to dismantle when they reach end of of life.
@plem7210 Жыл бұрын
I think it is not as clear cut. Solar panels do tend to leach out lead and candium into the soil. As they get older. That’s on a large footprint of acres. Plus only lasting some 20 to thirty years. Before you have to recycle the panels. Build them over again. More pollution and energy building them again. Even dealing with the radioactive waste. Nuclear puts out a huge amount of electricity. With very little emissions at the plant itself. The US designed nuclear plants are very safe. What did we have. One issue ever at a nuke plant. I do not count the crappy designed Soviet union plants. Or was that Japan that built one in an iffy exposed to a major ocean flooding location. You do have to be careful where you build them.
