I am a third generation registered Holstein breeder and about 15 years ago I went to a sale with my then girlfriend (now wife) and she thought a Brown Swiss calf was “adorable”. I was afraid my father was going to disown me when I came home with a Swiss calf. We have a handful of brownies mixed in with the black and whites today and I’m still in my father’s will... it’ll be fine

My grandfather one time bought 20 angus heifers and turned them in with a group of 70 charolais heifers, we raised registered charolais for several years at the time. These white heifers had never seen anything but white cows their whole lives. We pulled in the pasture and the white heifers came running thinking they were getting feed. We stopped open the gate to the trailer and the white heifers took off seeing the black heifers and the balck heifers chased them I think just wanting to be with other cows. They just all ran through the fence and kept going. The white cows mooing caused they were scared the black ones mooing caused they were scared, just for different reasons. My grandfather just looked at me and said , let me know when you get all those up i will be at the house!!

Good move Brian. Bringing in the Hereford line for maternal traits. Too many breeds have terminal traits that have caused problems galore. I do like Angus cattle but we've bred way too much for finishing and not paid enough attention to the maternal traits of the cow.

My dad told a joke once; There was an Angus, a Charolais, and a Hereford standing by the fence. The Angus says to the other 2 "boy, that grass sure looks good over there on the other side of the fence". So she jumps the fence and goes to work eating the fresh green grass. Then the Charolais gets to thinking, after seeing the Angus enjoying herself, "Im gonna join her", so she jumps the fence. She also goes to work eating the beautiful green grass. So then the Hereford is there all by herself, she starts walking back and forth noticing how her 2 companions are now really enjoying themselves, so she lays down and prolapse's.

YES! Some Herefords have found their way to your farm. Careful now, you may find that you end up keeping some after you spend a season with them. Pure Hereford is all I have raised for 40+ yrs in a closed herd [sire is brought in every 3 yrs] and wouldn't have it any other way. And they do seem well off the ground which is a good thing in my opinion. Never got into the shorter ones. I am 6' and ours average shoulder height, and average 1450# overall. From birth I work with, in and around them and then select the calm and best scoring to breed. We actually have one that we use for animal therapy.

Back in the mid-eighties, my grandfather brought home a blonde hereford bull. It was a cross of a charolaise bull and hereford heifer. To this day we still have low birth weight babies and they grow fast and large. We never had any birthing problems and the steers always sold well at auction. It was a pretty good cross breed of cattle. I was curious one day and I did a google search for this sort of bull and I read a university made this same cross. Their findings were the same as ours and they also found out they grow faster and larger with average rations of feed per animal. Cross breeds have their place unless you prefer to have your cattle being born with a fifth leg growing out of their shoulders.

Hey, my boss son's have a registered hereford sale yearly. They focus more towards feed efficiency They have heard sires too etc. They don't raise them in pins, don't feed them silage, and don't sell their bulls for stupid pricing. (Don't hold me to it but I think their highest selling bulk at the moment is 18k) auction tho. They are raised on crab grass and blue stem in the summer. in the winter they're feed is simply 20% breed cubes, alfalfa and crab grass. What I love is they're grown fairly natural but growth is amazing along with other genetics. Kinda free range their registered heard pasture is like 1,000+ acres. I personally only plan on buying semen for my black cows
