When I was 14 or 15 I spent most of a summer working with / for my grandfather, a retired farmer. He was a tough old man who lived through the great depression and lost a brother in WW2. Every day at noon we came inside and washed up to have lunch with Grandma and listen to Paul Harvey on the radio. Every time I hear Paul Harvey's voice I think of them both. I miss you Grandma and Grandpa. 😢

My father milked cows twice a day, and walked behind a horse with a one furrow plow, and shucked corn from "the down row" I've rescued breach born calfs and put up hay in 100+ degree lofts, and sat on a tractor pulling a disk all day long, borke the ice for the cows and horse and carried hay through the mud and manure. Sadly, those days are gone, and I'm city slicker now and this commercial made me cry, but the American Famer endures.

Mr Harvey was a neighbor of mine. Though I don't know if he wrote this or just recited it, it is almost perfectly a clear representation of my values. This is what community ought to be. This poem depicts the essence of my American dream. If that resonates with you take steps everyday to be grateful and to live the words out in your own life. If you think that is old fashioned, stupid or useless you are part of a larger problem that plagues this nation.
