As a child in the 60's, one of my earliest memories was sitting in the kitchen with my mom listening to Paul Harvey on the radio. I usually don't get choked up too much when a notable person passes away, but the exceptions are Red Skelton, Jim Croce, Robin Williams and definitely Paul Harvey. Their gifts were special and always will be!

I call Paul Harvey, the farmers' friend. I'm 56 and when I was a kid I would work for the old farmers. They always would turn the radio on in the kitchen or barn religiously when his show came on. They are sadly all gone, and so are the farms. I'm glad to have the recordings and the memories .

I read that the film was very cathartic for James Stewart. He came back from the war with horrible nightmares of burning airplanes and men falling from the sky. This movie turned out to be great therapy for him.

In 1974 I graduated high school and went off to college. One evening I decided to take a break from studying and go get a soda. While I was.driving to the store I searched the radio for music and instead hit on this captivating voice telling a story. Every time I had an errand to run I would look for Paul Harvey on the radio. Sometimes I would make an excuse to go out and get him on the car radio. What a delightful story teller.

Jimmy Stewart was a Bomb Group commander with the 8th AAF , in England flying B-24s in WW2. He flew 50 missions, later he flew several bombing runs. In B-52's over Vietnam. Retired a Major General. And now you know the rest of the rest of the Story Patriot and Actor.

@c123bthunderpig 2 жыл бұрын
@@kenpatton8761 not a bad way to get promoted, if POTUS says it let it be done :-) wouldn't be the first mistake Ron made, but I digress. My father made two training films with Regan and Burgess Meredith in WWll - he was their " stunt pilot" in B-17. He mentioned Burgess liked to take a tip of the bottle, and walked into a cactus in AZ which delayed filming for a few days. I always liked him, he was my model of life in these days in Grumpy Old Men Series and Twilight Zone. I followed Jimmy through his exploits in B24's as my father .was in 15th AAF out of Italy . There is a great book about Jimmy and what those " young men" went through on those bombing raids title, MISSION by Robert Matzen. Currently feel like Battle of the Bulge and Bastone, .as Pacific Northwest getting hit with snow. Have a great holiday - Feliz Navidad

Cool backstory provided by my all-time favorite radio personality. I had a part-time job delivering airline tickets for a travel agency when I was in high school (yes, that does give away my age a bit) and the van I drove had an A.M. radio. A.M. radio being what it was, I used to listen to the oldies station as I drove around. But every day at 4 P.M. I would change the channel to catch Paul Harvey. Like It's a Wonderful Life, he was an American treasure. Anyway, what he said here brought my memories of It's a Wonderful Life into focus. The first time I saw the movie wasn't even during the Christmas season and it wasn't on one of the major networks. They used to show it on late-night T.V. from time-to-time on Channel 50 in Detroit back in the mid to late 70s, one of three channels you could get on UHF (the Public TV station and channel 62 being the others). I fell in love with the movie there and then. The best take I heard on it was, "If you don't tear up a bit at the end of It's a Wonderful Life, maybe movies aren't really your thing." RIP Paul Harvey. The same goes for Frank Kapra, Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, and everyone else associated with making this classic who is no longer with us. Quite frankly, it blows the doors off of Citizen Kane but that is a conversation for another day.

I remember back in the 1980s when PBS would have their funding drives and would show this film. In the long fundraising pauses they pleaded for donations, saying that it was the donations that would allow them to bring these films to the screen. I later heard about the public domain status of this film, and it make me laugh at their phoniness. This is one of my favorite Christmas films, and overall really. Mike Rowe's "The Way I Heard It" podcast started out with nice little stories that recall Paul Harvey's style of making you guess who is the subject. The early episodes with the short stories are perhaps five years old now, but still available on iTunes. He openly admits that he was inspired by Paul Harvey and his love of the format. Worth a listen.

Wikipedia states, “The film, which went into general release on January 7, 1947, placed 26th ($3.3 million) in box-office revenues for 1947 (out of more than 400 features released), one place ahead of another Christmas film, Miracle on 34th Street.” So, what you said doesn’t seem to be true. 26th out of 400 isn’t too bad either, but it’s probably not as good as they would have liked or as it deserved. It probably would have done better if released on Christmas Day instead of the day after the end of the Christmas season. I checked TCM and they say it premiered first in New York on Dec. 20, 1946, and was released Jan. 7, 1947…so 2 sources of proof it wasn’t in the summer. In any case, it’s a wonderful film!

It came on just in time for me to catch it on the way home from school. It was a Monday through Friday broadcast, and at the same time of day, on Saturdays, on the local access television station "Lowell Thomas Remembers" was shown on my television. Both of these men hugely influenced my education and philosophy. Paul Harvey kept it up well into what passes for my adulthood. Lowell Thomas passed away right before I graduated from high school. Bit of a paradox though - had the copyright been renewed it would not have been shown so much and might not have become any more popular than it already was. And what explains the original lack of popularity? I do not think it was shown that much in the 1970s either. I did not see it myself until perhaps 1983. It was shown more on cable than it was the Big 3. I saw it once and became an instant fan.

We used to listen to Paul Harvey on AFRTS when we were serving overseas. Everyone would quiet down and listen to his "The Rest of the Story" tales. It always made me feel close to home. My favorite was the colorblind man who created the colors for Crayola. 🥰

BTW it's not in the public domain anymore. Republic Pictures found a way to bring it under copyright by buying its soundtrack. Long story short, it was eventually acquired by Viacom, and is now under the stable of Paramount Pictures. And now you know the rest of the rest of the story.

So sad that the movie didn't get the recognition it deserved. The storyline, acting everything was great. So glad it was finally made. Have loved it since I was a kid.

I know a college professor who deduced where Bedford falls is. He said it was Courtland new York. Frank Capra said it was Seneca falls New York. I lived in Syracuse, which is about 40 miles east of Seneca falls. It was also was a great help for captain Frank Capra.

Paul Harvey had a unique and very talented way to tell The Rest Of The Story about many different events and subjects and this commentary is a fine example. He gave us information on how this Famous Movie evolved from an idea to great success in theater and Television and DVD sure miss His Voice on Air.

I might have been the only 4th grader in the late 90s who listened to and liked Paul because he would come on the radio sometimes coming home on the school bus and when he got to his history lesson I’d be just listening wondering “wow where is this going?” And then in the last 5 seconds he’d have a M night shamalan style reveal and it would all make sense.

@@sergeantmasson3669 Until 1993, when Republic Pictures reasserted copyrights to the film based upon the original story and the score. True, the moving pictures are truly in the public domain, but the story and music score are not. It used to air on dozens of tv stations many times during the Christmas season. Now, ever notice it only plays once at Christmas on NBC? That's because they pay to exclusively air it based upon the copyrights on the story and music.
