Many years ago, there was radio personality named Paul Harvey. He told stories of how things turned out the way they did. Some of the stories were extremely interesting. This is the retelling of an edition of The Rest of The Story which tells of how the Christmas movie "It's A Wonderful Life" became so popular.

As a child in the 60's, one of my earliest memories was sitting in the kitchen with my mom listening to Paul Harvey on the radio. I usually don't get choked up too much when a notable person passes away, but the exceptions are Red Skelton, Jim Croce, Robin Williams and definitely Paul Harvey. Their gifts were special and always will be!

I call Paul Harvey, the farmers' friend. I'm 56 and when I was a kid I would work for the old farmers. They always would turn the radio on in the kitchen or barn religiously when his show came on. They are sadly all gone, and so are the farms. I'm glad to have the recordings and the memories .

Cool backstory provided by my all-time favorite radio personality. I had a part-time job delivering airline tickets for a travel agency when I was in high school (yes, that does give away my age a bit) and the van I drove had an A.M. radio. A.M. radio being what it was, I used to listen to the oldies station as I drove around. But every day at 4 P.M. I would change the channel to catch Paul Harvey. Like It's a Wonderful Life, he was an American treasure. Anyway, what he said here brought my memories of It's a Wonderful Life into focus. The first time I saw the movie wasn't even during the Christmas season and it wasn't on one of the major networks. They used to show it on late-night T.V. from time-to-time on Channel 50 in Detroit back in the mid to late 70s, one of three channels you could get on UHF (the Public TV station and channel 62 being the others). I fell in love with the movie there and then. The best take I heard on it was, "If you don't tear up a bit at the end of It's a Wonderful Life, maybe movies aren't really your thing." RIP Paul Harvey. The same goes for Frank Kapra, Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, and everyone else associated with making this classic who is no longer with us. Quite frankly, it blows the doors off of Citizen Kane but that is a conversation for another day.

@@kenpatton8761 not a bad way to get promoted, if POTUS says it let it be done :-) wouldn't be the first mistake Ron made, but I digress. My father made two training films with Regan and Burgess Meredith in WWll - he was their " stunt pilot" in B-17. He mentioned Burgess liked to take a tip of the bottle, and walked into a cactus in AZ which delayed filming for a few days. I always liked him, he was my model of life in these days in Grumpy Old Men Series and Twilight Zone. I followed Jimmy through his exploits in B24's as my father .was in 15th AAF out of Italy . There is a great book about Jimmy and what those " young men" went through on those bombing raids title, MISSION by Robert Matzen. Wikipedia states, “The film, which went into general release on January 7, 1947, placed 26th ($3.3 million) in box-office revenues for 1947 (out of more than 400 features released), one place ahead of another Christmas film, Miracle on 34th Street.” So, what you said doesn’t seem to be true. 26th out of 400 isn’t too bad either, but it’s probably not as good as they would have liked or as it deserved. It probably would have done better if released on Christmas Day instead of the day after the end of the Christmas season. I checked TCM and they say it premiered first in New York on Dec. 20, 1946, and was released Jan. 7, 1947…so 2 sources of proof it wasn’t in the summer. In any case, it’s a wonderful film!

I remember back in the 1980s when PBS would have their funding drives and would show this film. In the long fundraising pauses they pleaded for donations, saying that it was the donations that would allow them to bring these films to the screen. I later heard about the public domain status of this film, and it make me laugh at their phoniness. This is one of my favorite Christmas films, and overall really. Mike Rowe's "The Way I Heard It" podcast started out with nice little stories that recall Paul Harvey's style of making you guess who is the subject. The early episodes with the short stories are perhaps five years old now, but still available on iTunes. He openly admits that he was inspired by Paul Harvey and his love of the format. Worth a listen.

Bit of a paradox though - had the copyright been renewed it would not have been shown so much and might not have become any more popular than it already was. And what explains the original lack of popularity? I do not think it was shown that much in the 1970s either. I did not see it myself until perhaps 1983. It was shown more on cable than it was the Big 3. I saw it once and became an instant fan.

Christmas 1971 was very depressing for me as I'd lost my much beloved Grandfather on the 22nd of December. I mean I was way down there in the pits...that is until I watched "It's a wonderful life" and the realization that Gramps was in a much better place with the woman, my Grandmother, he loved more than life itself. From that day on Jimmy Stewart was, and still is, my favorite actor and I look forward every year to watching "It's a Wonderful Life" for the umpteenth time with tears in my eyes at the end.

Now think about how different the world would be if each of the tens, maybe hundreds, of millions of babies aborted since Roe v Wade had been born and allowed to live.......

Read the book "Mission" about Jimmy Stewart's War experiences. The part of the story that Paul Harvey would not have told was the depth of despair in which (then) Colonel Stewart, fresh from the war, had found himself. My understanding is that Stewart was rudderless. Having seen what he had seen, he could not go back to the frivolous comedies he'd made (The Philadelphia Story). Frank Capra called Stewart, told him he had a movie. Stewart was not interested until Capra, also fresh back from a harrowing war experience, told him it was about a man who wanted to kill himself but was redeemed by an angel. Read the book: "Five Came Back". Stewart said where do I show up? Jimmy Stewart was the grandson of a Gettysburg veteran (alive when Stewart was a boy). His father had fought in both the Spanish-American War, World War I. Stewart was weaned on the stories of "Lucky Lindbergh". He somehow managed to convince his father to permit him to take a $5 ride in a Barnstormer's airplane. Stewart was qualified as an instructor on both B-24s, B-17s and when asked which he preferred (as they planned to go overseas, having fought the studio systems attempts to keep him stateside) said: "Who's going first?"

Wow! I miss Paul Harvey! When I was young and strong and my hair grew in places that made sense, his show was broadcast on a radio station local to where I lived at the time, in Columbus, GA. It came on just in time for me to catch it on the way home from school. It was a Monday through Friday broadcast, and at the same time of day, on Saturdays, on the local access television station "Lowell Thomas Remembers" was shown on my television. Both of these men hugely influenced my education and philosophy. Paul Harvey kept it up well into what passes for my adulthood. Lowell Thomas passed away right before I graduated from high school. I am so thankful for the Internet and folks like you who help make these old programs available to me.

It was a family staple on TV in the 1960s! I watched each year as a child.

I wonder what other gems don't get enough exposure to catch the hearts of so many, and are lost on a shelf in the archives, because of the studios priorities being out of wack -- more so today, especially today.

A while after Paul died a court case was held contending that "It's a Wonderful Life" should be returned to copyright status. The plaintiffs argued that although the film's copyright had lapsed, the original story "The Greatest Gift" had not. The court ruled in the plaintiff's favor, and as a result "It's a Wonderful Life" is no longer in the public domain, and those running it have to pay a fee to do so.
