Independent reporter Tina-Desiree Berg covered a community meeting in Castroville, California where residents expressed their growing concerns weeks after the massive Vistra Lithium Battery Plant fire spread toxic chemicals as far as 50 to 100 miles and sickened residents with nosebleeds, headaches, burning lungs, chemical burns, dizziness, breathing problems, metallic taste in mouth, and more. In this clip, Tina speaks with two local farmers about the growing concern that the toxic chemicals released during the fire may have contaminated local crops in the nearby "Salad Bowl of America"-the farming area that produces 70% of Americans' vegetables (and a lot of our fruits). Have you thought about doing a story on enhanced geothermal energy? It doesn't require any lithium-ion batteries for storage, and can provide clean energy 365 days per year, 24 hours per day, in a wide variety of climatic and geological conditions. Check out the Fervo project in Utah if you haven't already heard about it. If an enhanced geothermal plant were to catch fire, it could be rapidly shut down, and certainly would not cause problems as severe as what just happened at Moss Landing. Can we please phase out this cheap Tesla crap and start looking at some better and safer long-term generation solutions? Get Alien Musk on the phone and ask him if he wants some cobalt cabbage from Salinas with his winter greens. What a supreme db lol.

Yep, this is why I'm pro-regulations. It's SOOO much cheaper just to not put chemical plants next to the one place we grow our veggies in the states then to clean it up after something happens. Of course the GOP won't even allow us to do research studies for this exact reason. No, while they are in a blue state, the farms in California are in the red part of the state. They decide zoning laws. It's easy unless a bunch of people start yipping for the state gov to not even realize it's a problem until after the fact. Which is why we really need the federal gov to pass a law that requires states to chart what'd happen if there was a catastrophy. Of course right now Trump is making it even easier and getting rid of the FDA.

The difficult thing is even surrounding areas were affected. You can test in Moss Landing and they’re awaiting results from independent tests that were done in a wide area even miles away. I live 9 miles from the Plant in Watsonville. How do I know if my organic garden is safe? I seem to be all right, but that’s all I can go by. Most of us will not know unless we pay for testing ourselves. My heart goes to those that were affected closer in. I have a friend who lives further out and she was affected. They are sweeping this under the rug, and it makes sense because how can they begin to pay for all these damages? If they find that the toxic metals have affected a greater area then when? Are crops affected? Our aquifer? Us!
@Didibloome
@Didibloome 15 сағат бұрын
@yadealone yeah, that is a tough one. The only thing I can think of is to replace soils and compost from non-contaminated sources, in a greenhouse, but who knows what is leaching into the groundwater. I'm sorry you have to deal with this and being so close to the fire. It's a bad situation. Though, for the rest of us in order to avoid contaminated crops from the area, we should definitely try to grow some of our own food. Someone just got rid of the food insecurity dept, and this is the best way to get ahead of things and make sure we don't have problems.

I would try to sue the corporation or the local government or EPA and have them pay a settlement to convert all of the local farms into Hydroponics growing systems in order to prevent and minimize any contamination that is going to be in the soil for a couple of years thus also contaminating local food This way they have to pay some type of large restitution to the town for possible health risks and side effects that they're going to see later on but then also this prevents these local farms from being shut down if produce was later discovered to be unsafe and contaminated this will allow farmers to continue grow crops for their business and they won't have to worry about going bankrupt if their produce is not grown in the unsafe soil this would be safer to eat I feel like that's only fair for the corporations to pay to prevent the local agricultural business from being completely wiped out and hopefully their business can stay afloat

@ fascist is what the majority of Americans want us to become and it looks like they're going to have their way since no one in the republican party thinks that obeying the law is important any more. Prior to this of course, we can whatever we want to do so a country can be socialist in some aspects and capitalistic in others. For example, the repubs would like end SSI. Whew, yah that's alot of money saved. But, then you would have to pay for your parents food and shelter when they are retireed and their life savings are eaten up by inflation. Without Medicare, you'd have to decide to I pay $200k for grandma's heart surgery instead of sending my kids to college or should I just let your folks die if they should become seriously ill? Do you see the value of socialism yet?

When I read through the comments in any of the videos regarding this subject (ONLY ON STATUS COUP!) I am reading about who's to blame, what do we do, grow your own veggies....!!! Whatever!! The air is STILL not safe, and--- it will be a LOOOOONG time before you can utilize the soil from any earth anywhere near that area. And THAT area is MUCH BIGGER than the area YOU are even thinking about. Anything that will be grown around there HAS TO BE ENCLOSED.....with air specifically filtered to target the toxins that have become prevalent due to this particular type of fire. AND with soil that is not contaminated; or you could grow hydroponically with highly filtered water. Listen--- my sister, (who is VERY smart especially when it comes to anything plants!) made me aware that there is a BIG difference between "toxic" and "lethal" when it comes to plants. And thats in their normal state. Anyway, I can't help but think if you keep exposing yourself to "toxic"....ALOT,,,,ie daily, all nite, etc... you then send yourself more toward lethal accumulations.

Idk. But I know for certain NONE OF US want these plants burning next to us. Think about it… Would you rather have a GAS vehicle go up in flames next door, with the wind blowing towards your house? OR would you rather have an EV go up in flames next door, with the smoke blowing towards your house? You must choose one. And why did you choose one over the other? Neither are healthy for us or the planet but I can say with confidence that I’d rather deal with a gas vehicle because it can be put out within 30 minutes. The alternative does more damage. Not only does it deposit loads of heavy metals it also creates a gas that stays low to the ground for a while before dissipating.
