Just ordered a Lincoln Viking last week. After seeing the ESAB here, I really wish I'd seen all the features beforehand. I'm sure the Viking helmet will be amazing but, I'm really digging the ESAB now. Dammit... Looks like a fantastic product @ESAB!! I'll have to check you guys out in the near future!

Just ordered your esab a-50 I cant freaking wait till it gets here. Edit: i noticed light leaking inside the hood where the two arms connects the cartridge to the shell And where you push the tab in that holds the lens to the shell. My flashlight doesn’t lie. plus its way too bright wayyyy too bright. Have to have my hood on 13 for around 120 amps. Cmon.. really? Also the lens sits very loose on the hood. I can see dust and weld metal dots getting inside the hood and sticking on the filter, sensors, and the solar cell. Which! Is partly blocked by the way the shell is shaped. Honestly very disappointed. Wished I put some thought into my purchase. Please fix these issues.

I have the Sentinel 50. It’s a great hood. Comfortable for long time use. Other features are 4 sensors, so it detects the arc from about anywhere. It also has a solar cell plus the batteries, and tells you when the batteries are low. I’ve had this for over a year, and no battery change yet.

Thanks for comparing the two. I am thinking about buying a welding helmet for my son for his birthday. As you said, the A50 has a lot of cool features (that touchscreen is the bombdiggity). But the 3350 has the much larger view area and that 4c lens. I was leaning towards the 3350 and you helped push me over, lol.

I've used a Lincoln Electric (not sure exact model, looks just like the 3350 though) for a good 4 years, held up well. Love the big viewing area. Comfortable. New job gave me an A50 so I gave it a shot. It's...ok. I weld aluminum so don't care for the grind button since I never have sparks flying when grinding. The viewing area is ok. The sensitivity though drives me NUTS. I work with 3 other guys building RV walls and so when I'm done and jump up to help them their welders always set my hood off even if they're not very close to me or I'm not even looking in their direction. Also, the knobs on the side to adjust the "fold down" or whatever you'd call it always loosen on mine and it drives me crazy having to tighten them all the time. I'll take my old Lincoln electric over this fancy touchscreen one for sure.

I've owned that esab helmet for 3 years as a welder working mon.- fri. It was a great helmet and still works today but after about a year of weekly welding, you will be able to bend them corners with the head gear inward. After 2 years they go all the way in with the flexibility from heat warp. Also after about 3 years, that front lense will not seal gases as you weld due to the warping itself and makes it harder to replace lenses after time. Bought myself a Lincoln 4c 3350! Esab did its job but for $20-$25 per outer lense? No thank you. Great video by the way!

Honestly the review was awesome. My instructor in welding school was a weldporn guy. Scott was his name. Sponsored by esab so any chance he got he was letting students use his sentinel. But I also used the 3350 from a bud of mine in school. The sentinel is awesome but the 3350 was just a tad better. So I ended up getting a pipeliner to be cool. Now the headgear is straight cheeks. But I'm going to get the 3350 because it's time to upgrade from that ol small lens.

The filter cartridge size of both helmets is the same. If you want the gear of the sentinel, is only around 35 dollars for the shell and the headgear, plus around 10 dollar more for a pack of clear lenses. All you need to do is to find a way to attach the Viking adf cartridege to the A50 shell, which should not be too difficult. The opposite is also true and you can put the sentinel adf on the viking shell if you do a little bit of mod.

After a harrowing helmet failure (sub $50 Antra) I want a good lid. Last paragraph of users manual said "We recommend a use for a period of 3 years, but no longer than 5 years. " Thanks for posting! Update of 2020, July 9: I thought the "check battery" button didn't work so I found some batteries to replace those in the Antra. The battery light still didn't light. I bought fresh ones and put those in. Everything worked. I would have had the same experience with a $200 helmet. My bad

Interesting review, I am looking at both of these hoods, but where I am the lincoln is 325 euros and the ESAB is 279 euros. Those are the cheapest local prices I could find. When it comes to build quality, which do you feel is more robust? Which one is more likely to be functional in 10 years?
@farmertylerranch4399
@farmertylerranch4399 5 жыл бұрын
They are both built well. When it comes to longevity I really can’t say for sure. My guess is the Lincoln would give you less problems over time due to its simpler design (dials instead of touchscreen, standard clear lens, etc). Hope that is helpful, good luck with your decision!

@karlrinebold4615
@karlrinebold4615 2 жыл бұрын
With pancake filters it's a really tight fit, you can get it to fit if you adjust the shell all the way away from your face, but personally I don't like doing that. I do however use the low profile miller welding half mask under this hood. It has flush mount filters, the straps are freaking cheesy but it fits better under the A-50 with it close to your face.

I have the Esab, the outer protectors are about £30 for 5 pack. The Lincoln’s are about £10 a 5 pack. The helmet tends to roll over and rest directly on the screen scratching it very easily. Touch screen is a little bit of a gimmick, you need to take your gloves off to use it. I never change the setting anyway. It is a comfortable helmet though.

I can’t find a better auto dark helmet than my Lincoln Viking. That thing has been dead nuts reliable over the last six or so years and I have abused the piss out of it! Love the sensor response and the clarity through the window. I’ve used it for every operation known to welding aside from underwater of course lol. Thing has been a champ! I recently tried setting up one of the higher end Miller lids strictly for tig welding and I can’t stand the damn thing. The sensors suck and the window is grainy or something. Just not a fan of it... love millers machines, not a fan of their gear... I would love to try out one of these sentinels sometime. I think they have a lot of good ideas with that hood but maybe need a bit more refinement. Excited to see what they have in store in the future! Thanks for the video! God bless!

Btw it maybe just the angle of the filming of the video, but you look as though your face is pretty close to the weld. Now don't get me wrong, I ain't the safety police or anything! I would never stop someone from killing themselves if that's what they want. Not my business! However, i had no one to teach me to weld early on so all i had was bad habits. Then an old timer showed me two things in particular that helped alot. First, with the work in front of me I should stand up straight and square to the work. Then with my torch hand (mig gun here) and my elbow resting against my ribs, this creates the triangle of distance I should have while welding. Not that I should weld in this position but just as a gauge of how far my head should be from the work when possible. It's easier on your back, your face is out of the smoke which is bad for your lungs and eyes and a smaller viewing lens in your hood at a distance shows alot more area around your work. Which brings me to the second thing. The shade and size of your lens. Ok you like the large viewing area. Alot of people do. But I think it's only because most people are claustrophobic to some degree. When welding you can only see a very small area around the bead anyway so the large viewing area doesn't help us see any better. So, it's probably a mental thing. Claustrophobia. Nothing to be ashamed of, but something to overcome! But from a practical perspective if you have a small lens and want to see more you pull your head back far enough to see what you NEED to see. This is where shades come into play. If using a fixed lens or auto darkening, when looking through the clear lens get your distance. I'd start with a shade 12 and weld. If you find you have to lean in the weld to see it, change to a 10. Still have to lean in? Keep going until you can see without hurting your eyes. And remember stick, mig and TIG all have different shade requirements. One shade does not fit all! If you get the right shade but still can't see the puddle without leaning in then try cheaters! That's what they are for. They bring the work closer to you so you don't have to get closer to the work! You have pretty good technique, those beads look really good! Like I say, you do what suits you best, who the "f" am I anyway! You may be plenty far away and it may just be the angle of the video, but someone did me a solid and I'm just trying to pay it forward. Hope you don't mind. I'm liking your videos. I hope you keep them coming! Peace

Thanks Patrick I’m glad you posted that. I too really didn’t have any formal training so I’m always glad to hear advice from others. I might give a cheater lens a try just to see if it helps. I’m glad you’re enjoying the channel, thanks a lot for watching and commenting!

Here's the truth the Viking 3350 has a small viewing area it second largest then the EASAB but the King of all of them and I know as I own all of them is the Miller Digital infinity elite largest viewing area in the market to date way clearer then even the Lincoln 3350 with the C4 lens As for the hoods performance it all depends what you weld if you weld on a bench all day they all work great but when you start to weld out of position this is where they all fall short of the Miller as the Miller has this little thing called X-Mode where it uses the magnetic pulse from the welder to trigger the lens not the arc so when your a Motorsports welder or welding in a pipe rack you can still weld even though the light sensors have not got a direct light to trigger then This makes the Miller a hands down winner if you have to weld anywhere but on a bench all day Truth be told my Esab is used for T.I.G on the bench welding Headers , Aluminum bungs things like that but when I go to weld chassis Roll cages it Miller all the way Don't waste your money ether one of these BUY A Miller Digital Infinity Elite

@@darthvapor3272 The ESAB is a POS its good for a guy on a bench but if you have to weld in a rack and cant look right at your weld it flashes you all the time the Miller will never do it period The only thing good about the ESAB hood is the outside grind button but the shell is so soft it is not easy to push on your head When your a shop monkey it the hood for you if you actually go weld in the real world you will see Miller all the way!! As for it being heavy it might be a little more but for the bigger window and X Mode are worth it all day long I got both hoods with in a week of one an other and the ESAB was first one I got and now it sits in its bag cause I don't like the fact that you have to put lens on the outside cause it hit everything well its up sucks unlike the Miller

@@13SKULLWRECKER just crushed the ADF on my Viking 3350 and I was looking at other options. I've taken my 3350 out in the field and it performs! Thanks for your input though, no a50 for me. I need something reliable. I spend alot of time in the shop but there can be times that I spend months out in the field. Maybe I'll just buy another Viking.

Where are the test results that prove either helmet protects the wearer from all rays encountered whilst welding? Inverter welders start with a brighter spark, and perhaps using a cheaper helmet is not advised? Who knows.

Lol touch screen. Not necessary in any way shape or form when a simple button will do the trick and be less likely to stop working over time. MAIN reason you don’t need a bloody touch screen in a welding helmet is cost. A $100 hood will do the same thing as a $700 hood. Protects your eyes. Don’t be fooled. More money doesn’t always mean better.
