Hi Dr. Rea, First of all, thank you for all the effort you put into your videos to educate us. I’m getting my puppy from a breeder in a few weeks, and I started watching your videos to learn more about dog food and ensure I make the best choice for my puppy. While reviewing the breeder’s contract, I noticed a requirement that we feed the dogs PawTree food and give them NuVet chews. I suspect there might be a financial incentive involved, as I’ve learned that PawTree operates as an MLM. When I spoke with the breeder, she confirmed that this was part of her contract. I expressed to her that I was uncomfortable committing to PawTree food, especially since many of their diets are grain-free, which raises concerns about DCM. I also believe that what I feed my puppy should be a decision I make with my vet. After a lengthy conversation, she explained that although many of PawTree’s foods are grain-free, they add taurine, which helps prevent DCM. She emphasized that she believes PawTree is one of the best options on the market and wants to ensure her dogs get high-quality food. She also mentioned that most vets tend to recommend Purina Pro Plan, Royal Canin, or Hill’s, suggesting it’s because those companies heavily fund vet schools. Despite this, I stood firm and told her I wouldn’t commit to feeding my puppy PawTree unless my vet approves. She then informed me that this would void the health guarantee on the puppy, which I’m honestly not too concerned about. Since I don’t have my puppy yet, I haven’t had a chance to discuss this with my vet. I was hoping you could review this brand and share your thoughts on it, as well as on NuVet chews. Specifically, the breeder wants us to use PawTree White Fish and Rice kibble or the Chicken variety. Thank you in advance for your insight!

I’m sorry your breeder had caused you stress. I 100% agree it is a decisbetween you and your vet, regardless of what the breeder feels (or myself). I will clarify a few points for you as I am not sure whe. I will be able to formally review the product. 1. Adding taurine does not stop DCM because the presence of pulses inhibits taurine (theoretically) there for adding it does no good as it will be blocked 2. It is absurd to think that a veterinarian that owns their own business and has 8 years of graduate education cares anything about who funded their Alma mater. It’s very disingenuous for the breeder to make such claims. You have the tools to make your own decisions if you have been watching the channel. That’s honestly all you need and it seems you probably are already headed in the right direction.

@@AnimalDocRea Wow, thanks for the quick response! I completely agree with you-I found it absurd that the breeder claimed vets only recommend those brands because they fund vet schools. It feels like a pretty shallow argument, though many breeders and so-called pet “certified nutritionists” tend to push that narrative. My background is in biological sciences, so I do my own research whenever I can in order to be a responsible parent to my puppy. I'd much rather forgo the “health guarantee” than feed my puppy food that I believe isn’t good for him. Also, I appreciate the note about taurine. I wasn’t aware of that, but I’ll definitely be doing more research on it so that if the breeder brings it up again, I can present her with more solid evidence. Thank you again for taking the time to address my question!

I’ve looked into Dr Harvey’s and because it is for supplemental feeding, I cannot score it. As long as it’s less than 10% of your dogs total caloric requirement it won’t alter any nutritional values you are providing in the main diet .

There is a Lithuanian brand named "Nature's Protection" that makes food for white, brown, and dark dogs AND cats in their Superior Care line, and they also claim to reduce tear stains. I asked them about studies regarding their cat food, they said they did internal research but did not publish in any scientific journal.

I just bought a bag of the adult maxi lamb pumpkin and blueberry recipe. I guess I was fooled again that this food was made in Italy .
@AnimalDocRea20 күн бұрын
The company manufactures in Italy, Brazil, Serbia, and North Carolina. It would depend on the lot where your food was made. Double check with the company before drawing conclusions from social media posts. Food sold in the US is made in North Carolina and would fall under US manufacturing guidelines. As always, if you have specific concerns regarding a food, always best to ask the source directly before scaring yourself.

What would you recommend feeding a pregnant french bulldog while pregnant? I know high protein is good but there so many brands to choose from. Can you provide a specific brand and/or food you would recommend while she is pregnant? Also, do you recommend puppy food the entire time or just the last 2 weeks of the pregnancy?
@AnimalDocRea4 ай бұрын
That question gets deferred to the doctor managing the case. Answer varies based on the individual pets physical exam and lab work.

The thing that is never discussed about sensitivity to ANY grain diets....human or animal. Is there an issue with the herbicides and pesticide levels on that grain that are the actual cause of the issue as opposed to the grain itself? There is an MIT scientist who's findings say glyphosate is the real cause of inflammation and conditions from grains.
@AnimalDocRea3 ай бұрын
In animals grains are not considered a trigger of food allergies or inflammation . Protein are the cause. That is why the veterinary profession on the whole doesn’t recommend grain free diets. But I don’t like glyphosate in general for any species. The time horizon though makes its significance in shorter living species questionable.

To play devil's advocate, you may have justified feeding a raw/homemade diet. You would not put a metal plate in a healthy dog. Only if he had a broken leg. The same logic should apply to feeding a properly balanced homemade diet to a healthy dog or cat. Only if the pet gets sick, or can't digest fresh food, should you switch to the processed or veterinary formulas. 🎶"I just checked in, to see what condition my condition was in!" 🎶 Happy Purrsday!
@AnimalDocRea4 ай бұрын
I have no issues with a homecooked diet if properly formulated. I would never change a pet that is getting a properly formulated home cooked diet to a commercial diet for no medical reason. I care about the nutrients, the delivery is really personal preference and less important to me. Raw does not factor as I can't think of a singular situation in which that the risks would justify its use.

@AnimalDocRea Winter, hunting trip. But the Soviet scientists advising on feeding dogs are very clear to let the meat freeze and never feed entrails. And only in the winters because dogs get sick from intestinal parasites in spring and autumn.
