So, if you had to choose a Fancy Feast pate for an adult cat would the adult version be better or the "all life stages " because it might have more nutrients, because it's also sustainable for kittens? ( just thinking out loud )
@AnimalDocRea14 сағат бұрын
I’d have to run the specific numbers and know the specific case to say for sure. I’d likely go with whichever numbers best fit my pets life stage.

perfect 👍 I'm a pro at converting to a dry matter basis. (Your channel was very helpful with that!) My angel baby kitten will be an adult in 4 months, so I am getting a head start on his adult diet! Thanks for the input. I will use the chart that you always reference and make sure the numbers are as optimal as possible!@@AnimalDocRea

I think that would make for a great video idea because fancy feast pate is such a great budget option, that so many people use and recommend. It would be interesting and so helpful to see which pates are the *best* for adult cats. The 'all life stages' or the 'adult'.

thank you for this in depth review of Rachel Ray Nutrish and PetSmart Simply Nourish. I have 2 rescue dogs - a small chorky (chihuahua/yorky terr) and what we think is a cockapoo. I've used Rachel Ray Nutrish little bites for years and I just discovered Pet Smart Simply Nourish deboned turkey and brown rice. I am adding in the Simply Nourish a little bit at a time because the cockapoo reacts quickly to new foods. I always make chicken and vegetables and add to the dry kibble. Thank you again for your review.
@AnimalDocRea20 сағат бұрын
Remember when adding chicken or vegetable to a diet it must be less than 10% or you will be unbalancing a diet and making it less nutritious. It’s not adding any value as the diet is already formulated.

Dr Rea… I came across a homeopathic vet here on u tube. His 13yo poodle has liver disease. He looked into it deeper & he has been feeding her the treats with one ingredient; the beef liver, chicken liver dried training treats. He believes the uptick in liver disease in dogs could be from the treats. Higher levels of copper as well. Just wanted to pass that along. Take care Merry Christmas 🎄
@AnimalDocReaКүн бұрын
Im not really seeing an uptick in liver disease at my practice, but I think if you feed a properly formulated food you are probably fine. I’ve only ever seen copper toxicity in 1 pet in my 15 years and it was from getting into livestock feed fortified with copper. It was totally reversible once we found out. It’s pretty easy to diagnose copper toxicity so that hypothesis if true would be easily proved. I think the copper thing is just the next fear mongering tactic.

@ oh I understand Thank you so very much I am so grateful to you for your knowledge. I will continue to feed Goose his kibble and keep him well hydrated with the veggies he loves as treats. 🫶🏻

Thanks for your effort and detailed comparison. I think calories per cup should have also been factored in. Comparing Purina Pro Sport (30/20) to Purina One: Purina Pro has about 26% calories more per cup. Depending on where you purchase, per pound, the Purina Pro Sport costs 20% to 26% more than Purina One. Assuming one would adjust feed amount in a accordance with calorie content, the Purina Pro Sport would cost about the same or even less than Purina One.

Thank you for this, Dr Rea! My pup turned one a few months ago and I switched to Purina Dog Chow because of this video. It took a while for his stomach a bit to adjust - it would cut right through him at 25% tapered. I ended up giving him 5-10 kibbles with his puppy food then slowly giving more. I appreciate it hits all the nutrient needs at an affordable price. Reddit was telling me to get Purina Pro but I am thankful I found Dog Chow, much more affordable!

Hello Dr! I hope this message finds you well. I would greatly appreciate it if you could recommend a high-quality cat food for kidney care. My vet suggested Hill’s, but I’m looking for an alternative that not only supports kidney health but also uses top-quality ingredients. I value your expertise and would love to hear your opinion on other options that balance therapeutic benefits with premium ingredient standards. I was thinking about Farmina Vet Life Renal.
@AnimalDocRea3 күн бұрын
I’ve not been able to get nutrient numbers from their vet life line. I’ve used royal canin LP and purina NF. If your vet suggested hills, perhaps take that nutrient profile and see if the farmina one matches but make sure to use dry matter. Always check with your vet first though. I just had a renal case relapse because the owner stopped the prescription diet and fed homemade and I’m not sure if I can get her back. Diet is the only tool we have for renal disease and it’s not about the ingredients, it’s about a very specific nutrient profile and you want a diet has data to support it. Your vet likely chose a diet that fits the exact nutrient profile Your pet needs to manage its specific biochemical abnormalities. On that note, I don’t make recommendations to manage diseases and I would take reservation in taking advice from anyone who has not personally examined your pet and reviewed the file and lab work.

@@AnimalDocRea Thank you so much for your response! You are very kind!! Since leaving the comment, I’ve watched several of your videos and gained a much deeper understanding of the importance of a proper nutritional profile, especially in critical cases like kidney disease. Although my cat is currently showing only mild symptoms, I know how crucial it is to address the issue early on. I would like to know your thoughts on a natural, homemade diet for cats, prepared under the supervision of a clinical nutrition specialist and a veterinarian . Once again, I truly appreciate your advice and support. I’ve already subscribed to your channel and look forward to learning even more from your content! 💗

Your vet can likely put you in touch with. Board certified veterinary nutritionist that can help you formulate a home cooked diet specific to your pets needs. It may also be the case that it’s not possible to formulate such a specific diet at home. You can ask your vet for a referral or you can find one by searching on acvim.org

Re: Taste of the Wild: "Q.Does the heat of the cooking damage nutrients in your food? A. Yes and no. It is true that some of the nutrients in the food are diminished by the cooking process. Because of this, we make sure to add higher than necessary levels of these particular nutrients so that the finished product provides optimal nutrition and meets our guarantees. The food must be cooked under certain conditions (including heat of approximately 200 degrees) to guarantee that the starches in the food are gelatinized. This means that the chemical structure of the starches (or carbohydrates) in the food are altered so that they are able to be digested by the animal eating the food. While there are some nutritionists who believe that raw foods are the only way to feed ourselves and our pets, we know that you can provide your pet excellent nutrition by feeding a high quality, convenient dry product like ours."

Re Taste of the Wild "In the form of steam, water is used in the cooking process for dry pet food. Taste of the Wild® uses a water purification process known as reverse osmosis, which is the same process that many bottled water manufacturer’s use. In reverse osmosis, water is forced through extremely fine filters, removing microorganisms, organic chemicals and inorganic chemicals. The result is purified water, which is then used in the form of steam in the cooking process for Taste of the Wild® dry pet food."

Hi Dr. Rea. I want to switch my dog to pro plan. I just don’t know whether I should choose large breed food. My Lab is 2.5 years old and 55 pounds. Is this considered large? Also, should I be concerned about canola meal?
@AnimalDocRea4 күн бұрын
I’m not worried about canola oil. You could go either way. It’s just marketing after 12 months. There’s not a specific requirement for large breed adults, they just go by adult standard. Large breed only has to do with growth in the puppy stage.

@AnimalDocRea4 күн бұрын
You have to judge 7s against 7s. It most certainly is better than any good scoring lower based on the actual nutrition of the diet. The numbers are the numbers. Now it’s not as good as 8-9-10, but there is certainly variation amongst foods that score the same.
