My heart leaped with joy when I saw a new video. Thank you so much. While it shows the pain of loss it also shows the healing of success or perhaps it is as you say - rejoice and be glad either way - there's a lesson both ways. I can't even say I'm a farmer - yet. Still haven't got the homestead up and running and sometimes it seems like it will never happen and every penny I can spare goes to land I will probably never live to see the benefits of - I'm 65. But, God willing it will be seen by my sons and grandsons and on from there. Each will determine what to do when it's their turn to decide but for now I'm busy trying to lay in the ground work and get my family back to a family farm. My husband and I decided we wanted to leave them a place to call home rather than a bank account they'd spend about 5 years ago. In that time one of my son's passed and recently my husband. I've decided not to wallow in sorrow but instead to keep the dream alive and be joyous in what I have left - 2 more sons and grandsons and they need a future. I've learned so much from you and thank you for all you've done for me. You are my inspiration and I replay your videos especially when I need a "pick me up".

I think a lot of us are on the same page with you, Pa. FHC, this is one the best videos you have made. It brings to our attention the need for humility, simple life and appreciation of all of God's blessings. This is the Life....the Farm life. I'd hate to think about how many apple and pear trees I've planted over the years...but now we can get about 5 boxes. The chickens love to get the bruised ones! Success for us is when the root cellar, pantry and freezer are all full before winter starts. Thanks for sharing.

The 51% success rate is what keeps farmers optimistic about the future and the willpower to keep going. I don’t believe you can be a farmer and have the word quit in your vocabulary. Hard times and failures are nothing but lessons to be learned. This is my third planting for fruit trees. Hopefully both of us will have a 51% success rate this go around. Wonderful video as ever.

I enjoy your videos. I think the message in this on is spot on. Takes a bit to break from the conditioning of ourselves from what this modern world deems as success, but I'm getting there. Your videos are inspirational to me as I lean some of the ways my grandfather and his father lived on a small farm and raised their animals, food and kids. I run a small vegetable farm in New Hampshire. Everything you said is accurate. I pray for 51% and I'm thankful if I get it. But work is what we are here for, take pride in it and be thankful to keep your head above water. Thank you for your videos, I've watched for years and learned many things that have been helpful in my farming career. The old ways can still apply, or at least inform. But wisdom is never out of date.

Sorry to see your apple trees die off like that. We live on about 1/2 an acre and are trying to be more self sufficient. We have a modest kitchen garden,raise layer and meat chickens,meat rabbits,and are gonna add some quail soon I hope. I've got room for a few fruit trees in semi dwarf or dwarf varieties along my fence line. We have a couple small crab apple trees that actually make decent pies,but I want more and better apples. I've reached out and received a catalog from century orchard,so I'm gonna communicate with with them to see what's best to plant in my area here in West Virginia. And besides the growth of your family there is the growth of your audience following. I for one have split cedar logs for my chicken coop run. Planted an orchard as you did (I've battled drought, Cedar Rust, Wooly Apple Aphids, and rocks). I considered building a greenhouse as you built the barn, I even bought your book describing the steps in detail, but I deferred to my age and bought one instead. Coming into retirement from an Engineering background in the city, I guess the biggest compliment I can give you is that you've inspired me to do many of the chores around my place using the natural resources available and enjoy the progress that a good sweat brings. May God continue to bless you and your family

I grew up on a dairy and our little garden was for us only. But I joined the Navy and our saying was calm seas never made a good sailor. One of my most favorite channels on youtube. I eagerly watch every new video when I see they are available. If the youtube notification system worked better, I wouldn't miss any.....but you know youtube. Anyway, when I bought my house 15 years ago I planted cherry, pear and apple trees. Three fruits which do well in my area, but over the next several years they all failed (deer, disease, harsh winters, etc). Then about 12 years ago I planted seven walnut trees, and they all started to die off also, but two have survived and I am now getting good crops of walnuts every year. Two years ago I planted six heart nut trees and three have survived to this spring. I am hoping to see some nuts in a few more years. So, I know all about failure when it comes to raising fruit and nut trees, but I am still planting and waiting.

Excellent retrospection on what is truly important. Thanks Pa Mac. It reminds me to recommend a good book with generally the same message. It is "30,000 On The Hoof," by Zane Grey. It is a story of a pioneer who dreams of being a rancher and works his whole life to raise a family and grow a herd of cattle around the turn of the 20th century. 👍👍

Always great to see a video from you! Really love your videos! Hope to see your apple pie and bountiful apples in the future! Growing anything that is alive is a humbling proposition, and I am grateful to anyone that does that as a way of living! Specially the small farmers! Reminded me that there are so many great virtues to be learned from the experience of cultivating, on a very difficult moment of my life in 2018, I took up gardening - just some pots in my house - just from that I say, if there is something that really teaches you the meaning of patience, perseverance and care is this, growing and caring for living things, that's for sure! We cant control everything in our lives and the sooner we understand that and be patient, but also persevere, the sooner we will find peace of mind, that is the biggest reward in my opinion. I have since then stopped gardening in pots some two years ago, but my wife now grows flowers in them :) As someone that started a new business in the middle of a storm last October, thank you, very much for the video, and the reminder, always great to feel so inspired on a Monday morning, greetings from Brazil!

I've learned to adjust my planting to what grows best in Appalachia rather than what some of my preferences might be e.g. I grow blackberries and pears with ease but apples aren't worth the work it takes to baby thm along where I live. Im on my 3rd set of apple trees...trying to find something that the cedar rust doesn't eventually get. I have visions in my head of the things my grandparents had. Some apple, plum, peach and pecan trees. The peach trees didnt make it. The plum trees flower but havent seen any fruit. The apple trees as I said. The pecan trees after 9 years finally made some nuts this year!! But each year I keep fertilizing and hoping this will be the year...

Living in the Ozark foothills the last two summers and falls have brought drought for extended periods. I have lost most of my fruit trees, apple and sweet cherries. What trees I have that are bearing the squirrels attack the fruit while green and wipe out the crop in a matter of days. At 69 years old I wonder about planting more but I probably will. It is hard to just give up.

Thanks for the update on your Apple trees. I was wondering how they were doing. I bought mine from the same farm one year after you. All died except my grimes golden and she’s barely hanging on. Literally. Lol I have replanted the whole orchard plums cherry apple and peach for the third time. Each time one or two survive. I have reaped two apples and one peach. But it’s all good. Roots dont need air, they need dirt, world's most famous extension agent Ed Faulkner said. There's air around every grain of soil, he said. He took his boot and stomped on tomato plant roots, while the plants laid heeled into a ditch. He never watered these tomatoe transplants even. Two weeks later, they were standing up. I take a fist, a boot, a tamper and pound soil tight around roots. They don't even wilt, mosttimes. This has emboldened me to plant more apple trees.

Aw shucks, I was lookin' forward to that scrumptious apple pie, sorry 'bout the "failure." I've had plenty of my own, Lord knows. There's the time I kept an unfruitful apricot tree too long (10 YEARS!) and I cut down a fruitful one just 'cause it had canker - shoulda done the reverse!🤦🏻‍♀️ Then there's the avocado tree I killed trying to transplant it...the Granny Smith apple trees that refuse to grow next door to a thriving Anna and Fuji, the Dorset apple and Kiefer pear that took on fire blight...BUT I press on, because I love growing things. Here's to the next 5 yrs... Lord willing!🥹♥️

Even the tiny corn is good for stir fry! Grow extra produce, strawberries, blackberries, etc....then trade with the apple grower down the way, until your own trees produce. As Paul said, Philippians 4:12-13 "12. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength."

I cant wait to have my own plum, pear, and apple trees, my dad does about 80% success on trees, maybe better. Our bushes on the other hand, decorative or fruit bearing, blueberries, currants, blackberries, raspberries, all die 😢.
