There’s a great thread on the Samba in the forums section that I found a while back that details what parts are correct for a ‘54 / ‘55 stock beetle. I have read through it a few times in pursuit of having a correct motor for my ‘54. They were apparently a lot of changes that were 1 - 2 year only items.

Hey Mike, A great video. You certainly have some awesome problem solving capabilities going on there. One thing I'm finding with heater boxes is it's easier to put them on once the engine is in. There are too many variables going on with aftermarket to original to bent. But then I'm lucky enough to have a lift. I'm looking forward to part two. ✌️ Peace from Melbourne Australia.

Always good to see the progress. On the lack of power issue, check the accelerator cable linkage is giving you full throttle. I have just had the same issue on a 1956 and like you thought it was a compression or coil issue, the cable wasn't giving full throttle so all great until you hit a hill!

I like to do the minimum Just to get an engine to run and then tune it. Just rebuild the carb. I'm sure there's some more passages clogged.i don't trust the accelerator pump you have an ultrasonic cleaner too. I believe. Replace filter, points,plugs,condensers, and wires. Anyway, it's looking good, brother. ✌️

Mine had a stuck vacumn advance and a clogged up intake riser. The advance freed.up and is fine now the tolerance is really tight and a little.corrosion seized it.

Blow air across the end of the hose at the pump to create a vacuum and pull fuel to the pump.

Hey Mike thanks for the cool video! Is there a 36 horse carburetor rebuild video anywhere? I cannot find one anywhere? People over tighten the clamp up on the carburetor and it deforms the little brass Barb which causes it to spit out right?

Everyone says take the fuel filter out of the engine bay however every beetle I’ve seen has one in the engine bay.

IN CA is was pretty standard. I asked at a few shops that are still around. Nobody has ever seen one that caused engine fire. And many of us have seen engine fires. usually the carb looses the barb.

I looked at a Chiltons book on VWs and one of the exploited pictures showed the clutch disc with the center hub mounted with the extended part of the hub going to the transmission, your clutch disc may be reversed. The part of the hub that extends farther than the other side is or was mounted to go into the flywheel. That what I saw, maybe you saw it , sorry if I interfered. I watch & enjoy your programs. We have 2.5 VW’s, a 58 pan w/engine, 63 Baja w/1500 engine, and a 66 w/o engine. I need your expertise. Thanks

Seems like it needs the jets matched to Commifornia fuel... up 1 on the idle, 2 on the main~ I think I went to 130~ on a 1600 w/a # drill set, yours probably would like a 125~

I’m hearing that you shouldn’t put the filter on the output side of the pump. You have unfiltered gas going into the pump.

old cars have them before or after the pump mostly in early years of most makes and models they are near the carb after the mechanical pump.
