I cant't express how I've missed the sound of that engine. I know, this is a piece of well constructed metal, but when I see when this car is coming back to life, it's just like a friend talks to me. It remembers me a lot to my "yellow-black-runner", a 50 HP Specialbeetle 1303 S. I've loved that Special Bug. Greetings from South-West Germany.

Great find. I sold my yellow 1973 VW in 1986 to two Japanese young guys. It has been idle for about a year but had enough gasoline to get it started and they brought a gas can. Sold it for $800 in 1986 of 1987. It needed new seats and also the rear fender was in need of replacement.

This episode reminded me of the Beetle I bought and drove in Germany while stationed at Ramstein Air Base. Over there they are called Kafers. Even says it in the brochures! My Beetle was a german spec sport beetle. It had Cibie fog lights mounted on the front bumper from the factory, blacked out bumpers, and trim. It was also orange! Similar to Hemi orange on the Plymouth Dusters. Man I miss that Bug, it was a 73 or 74 Standard Beetle, flat windshield with the large tail lights. (I bought it from another Air-Force GI in 1985).

Cool video and perfect length if you ask me. The good thing about the mid 70s is you can still find them in OK shape and in 10 years, when all the 50s and 60s are gone, this one should start rising in value pretty fast. I think in 72 they started with 4 rows of cowl-vents in the engine cover. 71 had two rows. Yellow was the most popular color during this time because there was a popular children's books titled "Volksy (The Little Yellow Car)" re-published around the same time. Have a great week.

I know the early VWs (split, oval, etc) are all the rage, but I'm much more fond of post-'66 (big window) models so it's nice to see a late 1300(?) get rescued. I realise that specs differed btw Europe and the US and elsewhere but IIRC very late EU ones had round rear lights and front indicators mounted in the bumpers. The rear lights are a retrofit from a '68--> 1200 I think, but as I say, specs in the US differ. Edit: 15:21 that sounds like an original starter motor too.

Putting a 1962-1967 taillights on the 1972 VW Bug, not a Super Beetle. Next thing we all know is to put 1966 and earlier old fashioned “Porsche” headlights as of European look. Or maybe graft the front fenders to put the 1937, 1938, or a 1939 Ford teardrop shaped headlights. Since most parts are interchangeable for the VW Bug from one year to another.

Josh would say It's a Runner! Not a bad little bug. I'm still on the lookout for a hard top Ghia. Thanksgiving day 1974 brand new VW. , a long story. Summary is a fright train, black cat and a lady crying as she looks for her baby along the river. Full moon of course. Now that's a good modern VW and I think the paint is probably OK, strange thing with the rear lights though. Jason it's a nice change to have a will it run before the first wash. Great video Jason, thanks. 👍
@jeffskillman9275 Жыл бұрын
Agree. A 1974 Beetle would have had the ‘football’ or ‘elephants foot’ rear lamps which were universal to both sides and required shaped rear wings (fenders) as the lights bolted straight to the wings. The moulded dash, 4 spoke steering wheel and front turn signals in the europa bumpers also all confirm this as a late model Beetle so the only explanation is that a previous owner fitted older profile rear wings (fenders) presumably because they didn’t like them or rear ended damage. The older 1200 rear lights were never fitted to europa bumper beetles. Well that’s my theory. I owned a 69 1200 and then a 70 1302S which were worlds apart. Great video.
