In Virginia, many ponies and minis are kept on a dry lot during peak grass seasons as well, because they can founder from too much grass, and they get too fat. So portioning out hay (not constant access) is probably the safest way to keep them in healthy weight and feet.
@sandymanning87442 жыл бұрын
You can get the round bales and pull off what you need at each feeding. They shouldn't stand there and eat all the time. Ponies founder so easy and something to watch for. Blessings and good luck.

Brandi. I suggest as many large drawers on the bottom as you can fit in the lower cabinets. Plus a drawer microwave. Those make a huge difference. And no doors on the drawer cabinets. So u can just pull them out and grab your dishes / small appliances / pots / pans. So much easier than squatting down and digging in a cabinet. Also I’d you use a large juicer &/ or stand mixer a pull out and pop up cabinet for those is wonderful. So much easier than living those heavy appliances. And keeps your counter clean.

Dutch, horses live in the wild on nothing more than what they can find, meaning grass. They don't need grains and corn is considered a hot food and it's grains is what they'll over eat not hay. You can leave hay if kept somewhat dry out constant but I'd only give small amounts gains for a treat but you do what's good for you. I also worm my horses as directed by my vet every other month in south Louisiana for different types of worms depending on the season. I love watching you and your family so thank you for sharing and stay safe and God bless

@angiebrewer99602 жыл бұрын
Kerry is correct, it’s the grains that will also put to much weight on your horses. Your littles are very smart and they will know the second that they can be boss. Have you tried using a curry comb? Tie the horses up on a short lead (snubbed up) and start “brushing” every day and twice a day, when the girls can help. The horse needs to learn how your touch feels. It will take time, these guys aren’t young. They have learned to keep the people under control, if they jump, people move away. It’s a learned behavior. 🥴 You can do it! 😁 God bless!

Dutch is feeding them pelletized feed that was specifically formulated for min horses that is what I believe he said they are young horses the one is a year and a half to two years he's a baby he's still growing he needs something with extra vitamins and minerals the other one is 5 years old and is Young and may or may not need the pelletized feed. That is some stuff they can talk to the vet when they go or call the vet up and have a talk with them on what their feed program should look like the person they bought them from should have clued them in on the feed program that they had also.

The house is coming along nicely. There's a lot more done since the last video of you showing us. My mother's parents built their own house out of cinder block's down here in Miami. My mother's brother built a house next door and another next to it, but it was a two story house and that's what they lived in. My uncle built a house in the 70's to the 80's in Lake Placid Florida and retired there. My uncle had one room set up as a small town with a train and train yard. Once in the morning and in the evening he would go in and look at the train schedule and move the train to it's destination through the town just like it would be in real life. He said trains are not made for racing. I was in high school when we went to visit and got to see it. Good luck with the plumber's.

I had 4 sm horse’s and one sm donkey. The oldest horse he passed of old age the vet said. We lost Mister 4 years ago and we miss his so. My stud named Mule and the smallest one named Tidbit we sold to a lady that needed new blood lines. She has wanted them for two years so we let them go to her. We still have Dolly our awesome donkey and our wonderful Miss Mini. We have had them for 12 plus years and they are here to stay till they pass. We feed round bales every winter. They live on 12+ acres. Iv not had any troubles but maybe because they have room to rome. You do need to take it easy on the grain like the other person said. I feed grain more like a treat in the summer. I do feed mine grain every day in the winter but not a lot. Don’t over feed the grain. They are awesome animals but do fix the one that’s not going to be your stud. We hang out with Dolly and Mini every day. They luv melons and we even give them a peppermint every now and then. They are very smart. Mister and Mini both know how to open a latch and Mister would lift the gate off of the hinge so make sure u have both hinges one up and one down to keep the gate in place. We didn’t know they had put both facing up till we caught him getting out into my yard.

DUTCH and BRANDY….Drunken Bees…..I was ready to give them the exact information. If you founder a horse you also are looking at a lot of Vet bills and ferrier bills . @dakotawinds92912 жыл бұрын
round bales are fine but with mini's I would give them so much a day, not a free for all. Also you are going to want to make a hay feeder to get the hay up off the ground. Horses are prone to sand colic from eating hay off bare ground that has a lot of rock or sand to it. You will see more issues with green grass as they are known to founder on fresh rich grass (think spring grass). We do not put ours out on the first spring pasture till we mow it down first once it is around 6-10" tall. Then we put them out for a couple hours for 3-4 days then add another hour or every 3 days then by mid may they are out 24/7 (we are up north so depends on when your "spring" grass starts to get going).
@margelittleboy2 жыл бұрын
Along with the spring grass, the same happens with the fall up north. The sugar content goes up & puts horses at a greater risk for the founder/laminitis. Good comment.

Rather than totes, do consider one of those chrome, wire shelving units. You can easily add industrial wheels of the type that screw in to the bottom. Optiinally, you can add shelf lips by ripping down 1"x4", old cedar board fencing, or pallet boards into 1"x1.5" or 1"x2", drilling holes through them, and zip tying to the crome shelf lips. The wood shelf lips aide in rolling your wire shelving unit(s) full of tools, camping equipment, canning jars, etc... up and down ramps and across uneven surfaces. As needed, use cardboard boxes rather than totes on your shelves or even in place of totes to save your money for other things.

Once you get to the garage and workshop area you’ll definitely want it big enough for your toys that help you build, slice and everything else you do. Dang I’m so jealous. But I’m much too old now. At 63 I could probably only do some chickens a couple goats and a garden. Then I’d be wore out. But I’m not afraid of work, just snakes. Ugh Here in Ohio we get like y’all. I installed heating and air for 6 years and that doesn’t look like it’s near enough ductwork to do your whole house unless those yellow bags are full of flex/flexible ductwork. Personally I never used flex except for the return air when the unit was in the attic. I always used inside insulated metal for the trunk line and hard pipe for the lateral runs. Different companies install with different materials. That was over 28 years ago so I’m sure lots of things have changed.

I don't have minis, but I do follow a horse rescue in Tennessee that rescues minis and has a mini as a rescue mascot. They feed round bales to all the horses, mules, donkeys, and minis.
@margelittleboy2 жыл бұрын
Round bales for large numbers of horses sharing is not as much of an issue as it is for just a a couple. They won’t go they the bale as fast, it gets dusty/moldy, causing heaves & they eat too much, causing founder/laminitis. So each situation has to be handled individually, as no 2 are alike.
@lynnbetts43322 жыл бұрын
@@margelittleboy This rescue doesn't have large numbers in each pasture. Generally 3 minis in a pasture, as they don't mix the minis with the full-size horses. And, if properly set-up, a round bale can stay dry and safe. Much safer than sitting on the ground waiting to be sold to the next hay buyer. Most hay dealers, even for horse quality, don't store in a barn. At least bermuda hay dealers don't.

Ask your vet about round bales.

With the round balers they are okay if they are just grass, but not too good if they have alaphafa or clover as they can founder your horse.

Former owner of mini horse and big horses here. Yes horses can eat their self to make them sick. Not so much on hay as on grain or fresh grass. Mini horses gain weight easy. We only gave our mini a handful of grain a couple of times a week. Grain will make a mini horse more frisky. If they are not growing colts, pregnant or nursing mama they really do not need grain except for maybe in the winter to help them produce body heat. Your mini horses have a bit of a belly so they for sure do not need the grain. As for hay please do not let them free feed on it cause they will just gain more weight. Right now I would try to prevent them from gaining more weight as winter is coming on. If they still have the big belly in the spring and summer try to limit what they get so they can lose some weight. It is hard to keep a mini from gaining weight thus the need to stay on top what they are getting as in treats, grain and amount of hay. Yes round bales are cheaper. You do not have to put the whole bale in their pen. Keep it is the stock trailer like Cog Hill Farm use to do and pull some off to feed. You can get a small hay rack to fill a couple of times a day for them.
