I tell you all the time that the crazy meth out guy confronted me, my wife, and my kids why we was all down fishing a public pond. Things could have went way way south in a hurry but I kept my calm.

Yes! Be ready, willing, and able to use it. ***BUT*** You did one better.... The most important rule of carrying a gun, when you strap that gun on, you put your EGO down. The best way to win a gun fight is to avoid it all together. ( If possible ). Some people are perfectly willing to throw their life away for their Ego. We as responsible gun owners, armed citizens, leave the Ego at home. "Sorry about that bro." "You're right, I'm sorry." "Hey dude, sorry bout that I'll leave." Sure you have the 'right' in most States to stand your ground, but make sure it's a situation that you have no control over, and NOT a situation you made worse protecting your Ego. Cudos to you Dutch for thinking of your family's well being and not your pride. A++

One thing I would add is never pull your weapon unless you intend to fire it. When you pull that weapon you've already made the decision you had to do so to save your life or that of your loved ones. Otherwise if you can walk away walk or run if you have to. No dishonor in avoiding conflict.

Situational awareness is a major factor in knowing how to respond to a given incident because you might have a gun but you never know if the other person is carrying or not so never truly ignore what is happening but be aware without letting on that you are watching the situation like Dutch said it can escalate fast especially if you are not ready to react if the need arises

The fact that you made a statement that those instruments of protection are carried for that reason, would serve you well in a hearing should something progress further next time. You are a good man Dutch. Love you and your family. KOKO.

Hey Dutch... Thanks for the constant content... I love how the girls are learning useful real-life skills at the homestead... Once again I'm sorry your family was subjected to the unpleasant incident with the crazy dude... But respect to the way you handled it, and to your constraint in such a stressful situation. You did the right thing to defuse the situation by using your head... You were packin heat and ready to defend your family, yet you used your brain to de-escalate the situation that could've taken a totally different route... Hat off to you mate... Keep safe and God bless you all...

As a former police officer and retired correctional officer you did the best thing you could do by not escalating the situation. I have no doubt you are ready, willing and able to protect you and your family but what you did was use your head, you put your ego a side and de-escalated the situation by staying quite and by doing that your daughters didn't have to witness something worse. Good job Dutch👍
