Ever since I got this thing last fall, I've wondered how it would do picking up dried grass cuttings. Well, I finally had the chance to test it out on plain grass, and it's a great success! Since filming this video I've devised a plan, I cut the lawn, take this thing out and use it to collect 3 good size plastic trash cans worth of grass clippings.
I use these daily to supplement the feed requirements here on my little farm, and it's great! The chickens, turkeys and rabbits love the fresh food, all while it helps me save money on feed costs.
Thinking outside the box when running a homestead is super important when money is a concern, and this lawn sweeper is a perfect example of how to stretch a dollar!

I was thinking the same thing when I seen one of these at Rural King the other day. I have a brushhog for my tractor and quit a bit of land. Would love grass clippings for our chickens and turkeys.

Outstanding video Erik. You have a beautiful little farm, and looks like you are having some great weather. I didn't think you could sweep up with that Gizmo doing 55 mph great job. Thanks for sharing with us✌️

Finally someone that does like a Mini farm. I do 3 to 4 acre fields of echo lawn. And basically let over grow. mow it with commercial mowers, detache it and then rake it with a mini v 60 rake for garden tractors. Then sweep it. Place it in a homemade silo. Roll it and cover it with a tarp. And boom silage for my dairy goats

I've used a sweeper just like that for years to pick up grass in South Louisiana after I mowed. Used the clippings to fill in low spots. Worked great.

Wow. I am almost sold on this thing. My primary reason to get it is for grass clippings, and this seems to do the trick! I always had the feeling the sweeper would drag the wheels, instead of spinning up the sweeper.

it does work well, if you go slow it does not work too well, you need a bit of speed to really scoop it all up

Got one a few years ago on craigslist for $80, This is the only thing I've ever used it for and my neighbors horse, who essentially lives in a dirt field with weeds, goes nuts when he sees me pulling this thing. He loves the grass

The chickens have already wiped out their natural grass supply so unless I'm around to let them free range for a while they are 100% dependant on feed to survive. This is a great solution. Sounds like I'm behind the curve on this one then, but I'm glad to hear others had already figured this trick out.

You could seed the yard down with a little fescue, clover , and alfalfa next early spring and there you have it , full blown hay , there’s several combinations as I’m sure you know , some farmers around here even seed with oats and other grain type grasses . It’s pretty simple , and for pretty cheap you could literally resow the yard for pure livestock grade hay 👍

That's what the back yard is full of. I shot this in the front since it's such a nice view, but the chickens seem to like plain grass better, and the rabbits go for "Real" hay. Goats? They don't care. If you feed it to them they turn their nose up to it, and continue eating the bark off of your trees! That's why there isn't a goat any more!

Good video. I am wondering how it will do after a brush hog has mowed pasture with thick bulky grass. Did you compare this with other sweepers?
@FarpointFarms
@FarpointFarms 4 жыл бұрын
No, I looked at the reviews and went with this one. It does pick up wet grass pretty well too so It should do OK.

Farpoint Farms thanks. I think the local Lowes has one. I might pick it up this week. We have a lot of rain in Texas and it could be a week before I can get a mower to go over that muddy area.

Out of curiosity, why did you have the back up slightly, instead of letting is be flush against the sweeper?

I'm just trying to extend the life of the bag. It drags the ground a bit when it's all the way down and I'm worried it may eventually rip.
