This man deserves a standing ovation. Lots of people on KZbin will only share knowledge if you'll pay for it. I wanna say thank you because you've saved people a bunch of money 💰. But I've always wanted to learn small engine repair. Jets ski's, lawn mowers, zero turn mowers. It seems like it's always the most simplest thing that stops an engine from operating. You got my utmost respect bro. 😎👍🤙☝️

Just bought our first house. Parents got us a lawn mower from an estate sale. I tried to start it up and it acted just like yours. I messed around with the carburetor and it came to life. It died again half way through mowing. I think this is what I need to do next. Pop it off and give it a good clean. Thanks for the great info!

If it's a relatively new mower, this is probably pretty good advice. If it's an older mower, and your diaphragm is stiff, you just went through all of these steps for NUTHIN because it still won't start, because he didn't go deep enough into the carburetor.

This is my problem 95% of the time. Even with ethanol free fuel I still have to clean my carb a couple times a summer. Depending on your model/engine it might be really easy to access without taking any parts off. On my last 3 mowers and snowblower (Husqvarna, John Deere, Simplicity) the carb was right there on the side-- all I have to do is clamp the fuel line and and unscrew the carb bowl. Easy to do in less than 5 minutes. I also recommend adding a fuel line shut off for $1 and fuel filter.
@FarpointFarms

good tips, even if the fuel is ethanol free- it still will contain a bit of ethanol - I add a fuel stabilizer to help with it.

You need to empty the fuel tank and rinse it with clean fuel and dump it. Check it's screen and blow back thru the fuel supply hose for the carb. If the fuel sat for years, you're going to find it has changed while it sat in the tank. It's best to run them out or drain them if they are stored and going to sit. Then clean and gap the plug to .030" Start with fresh fuel on assembly. Find out about your autochoke for it needing attention to operate freely. This one just had a little debris he saw while spraying the carb out. But there are other ways this job can turn. Everything went great here.

Very good quality video and instruction. One thing i normally do is remove the bowl gasket...carefully...before spraying brake cleaner everwhere. Or at the very least try to avoid hitting the rubber gasket with brake cleaner....as i have found that brake cleaner can distort/ruin rubber. Apparently carb cleaner doesnt hurt rubber as much. I have a snapper mower and every fall after mowing is done I run the mower until I have 1/4 or less of gas in the tank. I put it away and in the spring I add fresh non ethanol gas and it starts up right away. Once in a while I add starter fluid so I don't have to yank the cord so often. I've used this method for years on my snapper, a Toro, a back pack blower, edger and generator. Running the engine until dry will let seals dry out and perhaps leak. 🤔 This has worked for me for 20 years and I've saved a lot in gas, and ware and tare on the engines, gasoline, and noise!

So true! In my case hard starting has been result of ethanol blended gas gunking and corroding my carb, and usually takes a thorough clean before I can use my mower at the start of the season. A few years back I got sick and tired of the annual carb teardown, and since learning how to separate the ethanol from gasoline, been using only ethanol free gas in the mower. I do have to buy premium gas since removing ethanol drops the octane, but the mower and trimmers don't seem affect much with lower octane. Starts now every time first pull.
@FarpointFarms

Good to hear, I still would recommend a stabilizer as "zero" ethanol gas can still have a very small % of it in there. Better safe than sorry if you will be not using it for a while.

Nice video! I cleaned my carb last year which kept me going but I wasn't as in depth as you were here. So now that it's time again to think about mowing I'll be a bit more through this time around. The mower is old now but I'm sure I can get another season or two out of it! Take care, Rolland

I use seafoam in all my small engine machines. It eliminates a lot of carburetor cleaning. Not to mention seafoam is also a fuel stabilizer.
@frankc1430
@frankc1430 3 жыл бұрын
@DownintheHoller actually I use seafoam all the time. It keeps the fuel system clean.
@davidmoran4471
@davidmoran4471 3 жыл бұрын
I use a 50/50 mix of seafoam and Stabil 360 and a shot of seafoam in the plug hole. Pull the engine to compression stroke, to close the valves and good to store.
@frankc1430
@frankc1430 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidmoran4471 you don't need to mix 50/50. It says right on the can of seafoam that it is a fuel stabilizer. And I definitely wouldn't put it down the cylinder. It's not an oil. If anything you're washing the oil off of the cylinders which will cause corrosion in your cylinders and rings when sitting for long periods.

95% of the time it's the main jet at the bottom of the float bowl if it's been sitting around a long time...Don't even need to remove the carb to get at it.

Sometimes you don't have enough time to do everything. Just at least try the jet you can get to instead of being lazy and not even atempting. Also if you are doing everything make sure you don't forget that float jet!

Will be doing this in the next day or so. Thanks for the clear and easy to follow video. My trusty 2008 Toro gave up late last year and after some basic steps (filter, spark, etc.) didn't work I figured I would be needing to deal with the carb next. Did the same on my edger a few years back but I am glad this carb has significantly fewer parts.
