Hi eric, we own several of these in my asphalt paving company and we love them. I would recommend to anybody using then as a handheld to wrap a small piece of duct tape around the battery pack. Because if the radio is dropped the battery pack can break open.

Hey Erik, this is the first CB I ever bought about 4 years ago after watching your videos. Glad you're finally reviewing this guy. Looking forward to your range tests. I use it with a Little Wil on my car. With my Uniden 980 as my base station with an Antron 99, I can connect out to at least 12 miles (as far as I've tried so far). Wishing you a continued recovery.

Several manufacturers had similar CBs and a ton of manufacturers bought the battery mold so the batteries could be interchanged. Standard Horizon used them on marine radios plus the HX series, Cherokee AH27 and AH54, at least one Cobra, at least one export, etc. Whether the AA shell or the NiCad pack, they all worked interchangeably.

Had a Rat Shack TRC-232 that I used mostly as a handheld for many years. Dug it out some months ago and put batteries in it. No worky. :( Gotta dig into it and see if I can fix it. Nabbed the Midland 75-822 off Amazon and I'm really happy with it! Plan is to put it in my 2005 Grand Prix GT2 with a mag mount antenna. Got the external speaker/mic for it too. I have to fab up a dash mount out of some aluminum and High Strength Velcro (I hate drilling holes). I have a Rat Shack 40ch SSB buried in the back of the console under the ashtray in my 1999 Grand Prix GTP (Supercharged) with a *real* antenna mount coming out over the right tailpipe with QDs on several antennas from a 2' 'glass shorty, to the venerable old HQ-27 (IIRC), or even a 9' SS whip. Got a Turner Super Sidekick power mic in that one. ;)

QUESTION: When it comes to small, Compact, or Mini CB Radios are they inferior from a performance point of view compared to the Full Size Radios? It seems to me that if they are all 4 Watt output they should perform the same considering antennas and other variables are equal. I have the 75-822 already with the tuned K30 antenna. I'm considering getting a full size SSB/AM/FM if the reply comments persuade me.

Bought mine a handful of years ago, didn’t have a charge light, so , that’s new. This is a quality radio that I can get out and receive up to 3 miles ( signal depending ) weather,etc.. I like that it has adapter to run mobile antenna in the car, works almost as well as C.B. I’ve carried it on road trip in friend’s vehicle with only rubber duckie, works well for bear 🐻 reports, find your lane.

US version of the Alan 42. It can work with the Midland dual mike if you get the right dongle. It can also be modified to extend the number of channels. The low power setting is compatible as input for a small 35W power amplifier. If you use the car adapter you MUST connect an external antenna. BTW you need a better antenna than that rubber stump that comes with the radio.

If they want some of us to buy an HT, they need to come with an AM/SSB version like Cherokee AH-100, Magnum 1012 , Albrecht AE-2990/Super Radio SS 301 AFS/ Dragon SS-301. We won't buy an AM only CB radio (Mobile/HT/Base), it doesn't make any sense. If manufacturers can't add SSB in it, it's not for us. By the way, nice video. TNX.

Hey Erik, This is the one I'm ordering online. I have a question for you first, though. I'm planning to get the RoadPro (RP-711) 24" Magnet Mount Stainless Steel CB Antenna Kit for it, as I expect the rubber duckie antenna will be pretty worthless on the interstate (I'm using this to communicate with truckers on long road trips). Does it come with a built-in SWR meter for calibration with the antenna, or should I purchase one? Thanks!

Hey Erik, I'd be hesitant to cut up the car adapter. Historically Midland would have the adapter unavailable separately. I'm actually surprised they have them available now. If I were still using mine as a primary radio I'd pick up two or three and set them aside.

I'm looking at an inexpensive adapter unit that plugs into a home wall outlet, and then has a cord terminating in a "cigarette lighter"-style female receptacle that is intended to allow the indoor use of devices typically used in cars. The adapter unit's specs are given as follows: "Input voltage: 100-240V; Output voltage: 12V; Output current: 2A; Frequency: 50 / 60HZ; Wattage: 24W, for Car charger or Car lighter Plug in, bring your car appliances back home." I'm wondering if that adapter would be safe to use with the Midland handheld, with its cigarette lighter adapter affixed, and running to my apartment-size antenna, such that I could use the Midland as a base station, plugged into the wall outlet in my kitchenette here in my studio apartment, without worrying about batteries of any kind?

I have the Cherokee AH-100 handheld with SSB. It will accept the same battery pack and lower power supply/external antenna jack as this Midland. The best of my knowledge, this is the only SSB handheld ever manufactured. It's just okay in terms of modulation. My Realistic TRC-216 handheld with the 4-foot telescoping antenna with the coil and external mic jack will eat it alive on modulation. It modulates over 90 percent in stock form. How is the modulation on the Midland? I have considered buying one of these Midlands and a President New Yorker/Virginia antenna and pairing it with one of those little RM Italy KL35 linear amps. I have one in my Pilot that I can see almost a 50-watt swing with, depending on what radio I'm using to drive it.

Handhelds mostly run off of battery power. So if you happen to have a fixed distance you need to transmit, you then see which power level is the minimum you need to make that happen. This extends your battery life. I use a pair of Midland GMRS radios for traveling. Since we’re following right behind one another, we set them to low power in advance and were able to use them for about 11 hours without recharging
