I think South Africa's sudden return to form took England (and a lot of other teams by surprise)...England spent the entire world cup cycle preparing for NZ and Ireland and Wales while expecting Australia and SA's form to be poor....Jones' prep for NZ / IRE was evident - however in the last year SA has risen meteorically and Jones hadn't fully prepared for them. The media keeps bringing up the late bus like that's a reason why they lost. It's been asked multiple times. lol They lost because the Boks, out scrummed you, out tackled you, out manoeuvred you, out kicked you and out scored you. Fair play to the English team and Eddie shutting that down instantly.

@D G Sometimes the occasion just gets to players. Sinckler getting KO'ed was a blow for sure. Ultimately I think the quality of the Boks bench was the deciding factor. Even though England played one less match (Typhoon) the Boks forwards were fresher because Rassie was able to rotate them more and spread out playing time amongst the team. The Bomb squad's quality didn't hurt either.

I dont think England or Eddie should in any way feel bad about this result. They did phenomenally well throughout the tournament, they dis-assembled the All Blacks in the most spectacular way. Perhaps this was their fall down, because I am sure that Rassie and the SA couching team analysed that game and worked out strategies to combat, in a targeted manner, what they did to the AB’s. Being the 2nd best team in the world, after what has been traditionally Southern Hemisphere dominated times, is a supreme effort.

@@Elneamo Agreed. Frustrating from an England perspective too, to be honest. There has to be a reasonable time limit on what constitutes an advantage attempt. But rules iz rules. I thought the Bok defence was spectacular, and not just in that game, but throughout the tournament. I think they had the best defensive stats of any team? So all the folks talking about why did De Klerk keep kicking the ball away: I think SA were fine with it. There was (sometimes) a chance to regather, but for the most part they had trust in that defensive line. Basically, "you can have the ball, but you're not getting through." Wonderful stuff. England, did incredibly well to beat the all blacks, and deserve much praise. It was a privilege to watch you. Today I think the boks would of beaten whom ever you put in front of them. It all seems to round in a big circle, after that lesson in scrummaging they'll probably emphasize stronger scrummaging props for a while but then lose a game and say props have to b ball players and pick fancy running ball playing props which will look great for a while until they come up against a proper scrummaging team that beats them bye scrummaging to learn lesson all over again. I know the modern prop cant just walk round waiting for a scrum but I feel like they need to b judged on there ability to scrummage first and foremost

Jones is not as good as you think. I have never seen an English scrum so dominated. You also lost at the breakdown, lost the kicking game, lost in the air and line out, and failed to defend a couple of tries. A pretty comprehensive defeat I would suggest. For a team to play like England did against the ABS, then a week later get totally dominated shows an alarming lack of consistency, that's down to the coach.

May be unpopular opinion but Eddie, the coaching camp and players were arrogant around their power game and thought they’d push right over SA. You’d think Eddie would know better from his wallaby coaching days but the Boks forwards are the strongest in the Southern Hemisphere. Plus their forwards bench is arguably better than the starters. English forwards were rattled they couldn’t get over the gain line and kept getting smashed back tackle after tackle. Add a scrum being monstered for 90% of the game and that’s the ball game. SA defence won the game, missed just 14 tackles from 160 says it all. Eddie a great coach but potentially a little arrogant about their power game against the Boks who eat that stuff up.

Fantastic tournament! England team you did us proud but we must congratulate South Africa for their plan, tactics and form, they played a great game. Unfortunately we didn't play well enough by a long way to win.

My mom left England years ago, settled in South Africa and I was born here. i love travelling to England and have loads of relatives that live there. We traded banter all morning leading up to the game. They had their victory in the Cricket World Cup and never let me live it down. Now, it's my turn to rag them. I wasn't particularly concerned who would win. I guess you could call me a "Fence sitter". Well done South Africa and England. Watching both teams gave me a great deal of pleasure. England you will have your turn, you're a great side on the up. Well done to South Africa, you were amazing

If they hadn't played like that they wouldn't have made the final. Were they supposed to calm it down so they could play Wales?

johnny cash that's the problem with Welsh rugby, you think winning 6 Nations and reaching WC semi final is over achieving 🙄

I’m a South African and huge Springbok fan... but England had a amazing World Cup ... great opponents...It should not take anything away from the England team ... Only one team can win at the end of the day ... but wow .. looking forward to more England rugby ...

You are right. I was listening to them. I couldn’t believe it. England is a very strong team, I agree, but you never underestimate your opponent.

Stephan Ehreinrich - Only a fool would underestimate SA (or any international side in any knock out tournament), and the England squad and the vast majority of their supporters are not fools. This is the beauty of sport, anything can happen. Congratulations to SA, you were clearly the better team on the day. Peace.

Nobody underestimated SA, you really need to grow up and take your win with a bit of humility.

Alot of respect! No excuse just straight forward. Injuries are a part of the game and thats why depth is important. Big respect to Eddy.

Congrats SA for a brilliant performance! A bit of a let-down on ENG's side of things. Honestly thought that they would be more of a challenge......ENG, you can till be proud of yourselves!
