We all do it, but do we all know that flatulence is actually a warning sign of what’s going on in our bellies?
Rachael’s research is joining others in showing that a diet too heavily reliant on carbohydrates causes an imbalance of microflora in our guts.
Rachel is a nutritionist with an interest in how food and our environment influence, benefical or not, our wellbeing. Her talk causes you to think on what we are doing to ourselves and how we can overcome them.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I'm amazed how she did not say a thing about the importance of a good gut microbiome, how rich probiotic and bitter foods such as Souerkrout, ACV, Lemon, Digestive Herb Teas (peppermint, dandelion, rooibos), Fermented Foods (Kefir, Pickes, Kombucha). AND herbs! Herbs also are a KEY to good digestion! I eat a lot of carbs, but not refined, things like oats, millet, quinoa, rice, potatoes etc and my digestion is increible, because I put herbs on my meals such as (sage, cilantro, cumin, turmeric, ginger, perejil, basil, mint etc.) I'm sticking now to a mix of the Mediterranean Diet and Japanese Diet, focused always on whole foods. Also, every single body and microbiome in completely different, I tried the “Keto Diet” and Vegan Diet, but I felt AWFUL On both of them.

Eat less carbohydrates diet Remove stress from life Poor digestion is because of low Hcl You can check ur hcl lvl by drinking glass of water with quarter teaspoons of baking soda....if u bloated immediately. .it's good..if it takes more than 5 minutes...your hcl lvl is low The rate with which body produces hcl decreases with age You can check betaden hcl which is a supplement(use under supervision advice)

If you found this informative, you may also want to know that vitamin B12 deficiency can cause depression. Also, a person may eat lots of animal products (which contain B12), and still may not be adequately absorbing B12. Reasons for this malabsorption can include: history of having part of the intestine removed, having Crohn’s disease and associated intestinal inflammation, bacterial or yeast overgrowth, low stomach acid, taking meds that suppress stomach acid, and genetic predisposition! The more you know!

So how often should we be farting? And how much flatuence is too much? PS, I've been eating canned beans with egg and butter and I was farting 10-20 times a day, plus the smell could have killed someone. But after 1.5 - 2 weeks I fart much less maybe 5-10 a day. The body adapts. I think certain bacteria increase in the colon to digest the fibers

@jamesrempel8522
@jamesrempel8522 4 жыл бұрын
She said the stomach and small intestine are sterile. The large intestine is full of microbiota. This jives with what I've been reading, though I don't have sources easily at hand. I did a test a few months ago where I drank a cupful of syrup and breathed into sample bags every 20 minutes for 3 hours. The breath samples were analyzed in a lab for hydrogen gas IIRC. The presence of H2 gas in the first hour or two would indicate the presence of microbes in my stomach or small intestine.
@Kaletheist
@Kaletheist 4 жыл бұрын
@@jamesrempel8522 , thanks for your thoughts. While flora is less in the stomach and small intestine than in the large intestine, microbiota are crucial in the small intestine. Also, the bacteria in the small intestine measure in the millions per gram. If you are testing for SIBO, you are looking at an overgrowth of flora. I see no way that she can claim the small intestines are sterile. There are many statements in her talk that are concerning, especially her dietary recommendations. This one confused me the most because of my understanding of the definition of sterile. I was really looking for her definition of sterile in regards to her statement. I still don't feel that I have a complete answer and am open to info...

Alotta comments are on either side of the fence of whether farting is a sign of digestive issues or just natural processes being carried out. One important thing to note is everybody is a different to some degree & more sensitive to some things that others aren't. I'm getting from this talk that an abundance of carbohydrates (especially added sugars) produce excess gas. There's nothing wrong with farting per say, but everything should be done in moderation 😬 Have a balanced diet, listen to your body 💨, watch how much sugar you're dumping in your body and you'll be golden.

I asked her a question: I saw your Tedx video on eating a low carb diet to reduce flatulence as well as increasing stomach acid, and was wondering how many farts a day is too much and what's a normal range? Also what's a common range these days without purposely dieting aka just eating whatever? Further, is it possible that the body adapts to the Lion's roar from below after eating beans due to an increase in certain bacteria and reduction of others in the microbiota?
@blowintrees4885
@blowintrees4885 4 жыл бұрын
She replied! Thanks for your questions regarding my video and your patience with my response. I will first address your question wondering about how many farts a day is too much and what’s a normal range. In my opinion, from research and from working with clients over the years, I think that if you are noticing any measurable amounts of gas during the day then that is a sign your body is not actually processing your food efficiently and you are consuming too many carbohydrates for your gut bacteria to process correctly - resulting in the excess gas buildup that needs to then escape. If you are just “eating whatever” then your consumption of carbohydrates is likely to be in the “normal” range for most westerners and that is probably between 200-400g of carbohydrates per day, which in my opinion is FAR too many for your gut bacteria to process adequately. It is also not reflective of what your body would have been able to consume if you had been relying on unrefined/unprocessed foods that you would have had access to prior to industrialisation and mass factory production of cheap refined carbohydrates. If you were eating seasonally, with what was locally available - like most people throughout history prior to the industrial revolution, then your intake of refined carbohydrates would likely be much lower - and your activity levels would have generally been MUCH higher - due to manual labour and exercise required just for normal life functions (unless you were an aristocrat sitting around all day!). That being said, it is possible for gut bacteria to somewhat adapt to the foods that are being consumed - there is ample research showing that even after altering your diet for just 2 days with more or less carbs that the bacterial populations change in response. So yes, it is possible, however, whether or not those changes are beneficial or not are yet to be seen - ie. if there is an abundance of carbs in the diet, and the bacteria/yeasts that feed on those carbs increase as a result, whether that is beneficial for the body or detrimental is the question. In my opinion, and from reading plenty of research, it is not a beneficial thing as the species that prevail when the carb intake is high, tends to be a more detrimental type of bacteria/yeasts, rather than beneficial and gas is just a sign of an imbalance. So that is my take on the issue. If you are experiencing gas regularly - do a little experiment and cut out all refined carbs for a week and see if that makes any difference. Usually the gas is not the problem, but simply a side effect of other problems going on in your digestion, and when you switch diets to something that actually is having a positive impact, you not only get rid of the gas, but you start to feel much better overall. All the best, Rachael

What about organic sourdough bread, that's made with naturally fermented yeast right? Also no mention of apple cider vinegar to help digestion?
@trianchannon7235
@trianchannon7235 4 жыл бұрын
Richard Middleton can’t speak to bread. I don’t eat gluten. However Apple cider vinegar will totally increase your stomach acid so it’s strong. I think she could have mentioned digestive enzymes in a pill. They totally help. Also don’t drink bubbly drinks either at least an hour before or after you eat. Bubbles neutralize stomach acid.

Suge212 air cannot travel trough blood... if the mom farts it stays in her fygestive system... have you ever studied science at school?
@MichaelStanwyck
@MichaelStanwyck 4 жыл бұрын
Suge212 yeah, no. Sugars and indigestible fiber doesn’t make it into the blood and into the baby’s digestive tract. Sugar becomes individual glucose molecules before getting into the blood. Indigestible fiber is well, indigestible. A baby’s digestive tract is loaded with meconium - a collection of things like blood and skin cells. Newborn fur biome starts at birth. Even if there was sugar there is no bacteria to ferment it. In other words, no. Mom’s diet didn’t make baby fart. It was probably air
@Suge212
@Suge212 4 жыл бұрын
@@attoooh You must be joking. THAT is what you got out of my comment? When a pregnant woman eats food, does that food not get absorbed by the baby? Where on earth did I say anything about farts travelling though the blood?
@aishagranger1391
@aishagranger1391 4 жыл бұрын
Suge212 no, food that mom eats is not “absorbed” by the baby. The baby is not in her stomach, the baby is in her uterus in a sac, and he/she gets its nutrients from the placenta.

I think she needs to study what people ate pre industry and paleo diets. Grains are a staple of the human diet all around the temperate and tropical regions. Our bodies are adapted to run on mostly plants. Most health problems start with our diet and meat dairy and refined sugar are the problems.

I think my problem with farting is because there is poop in there but wont trigger peristalsis untill it reaches a certain amount...like almost 2 feet worth of healthy poop. Any tips on getting my body to eliminate when less is in there? Work really messes me up I wont poop untill I get home and its a huge 2 footer, I just fart all day its frustrating..

Don't meat & dairy clog up your pipes for much longer than other foods & eventually stay partially stuck in your colon forever? Hence the silencing of the horn?
@puresanteltd.139
@puresanteltd.139 8 жыл бұрын
+ashleyjane429 Actually that is just a food myth - meat and dairy break down just as easily as other foods - if there is any food getting "stuck" in your colon it is usually not because of the food itself but more to do with the dysfunction of the colon - which can be affected by a number of different factors. If meat and dairy clogged up the pipes then those eating the highest meat and dairy diets should have the worst constipation - but they don't. The theory can be disproved easily simply by looking at various research about very high dairy and meat diet consumption around the world and digestive issues. they don't coincide. hope that answers your question ;-)

I had been studying nutrition and lifestyle for some time and from my understanding, she is promoting a fart free life for a life with serious life threatening diseases. What she recommended can however be used in the beginning of your healing journey to slowly include more carbs, pulses and legumes which is essential for a healthy lifestyle. I agree with her on what she explained about the low stomach acid.

What kind of life threatening diseases is she promoting? I've been studying nutrition to recover from a serious illness. My findings seem to agree with what she is saying. I avoid carbs and legumes for a healthy lifestyle. My proof is in being able to recover naturally without meds.

Cholesterol, heart disease, diabetics are a few that results because of all the saturated fats in those foods. It is unfortunate that I have family members who suffer from lifestyle diseases because of this kind of diet. It is because of people like her promoting this kind of diet by making people afraid of farting! Unless it’s a food allergy, from my experience, more bowel movements can solve farting to an extend.

So basically we should stop eating carbs just because Farts are less ideal? Seems like a societal issue shes more focused on, and not really so much into the science as to why it is actual bad. While i do agree there are some flatulence that can be a sign of something potentially wrong, i do however feel there is a innocuous and more natural reason for it. She seems a bit bias in her keto diet, or a bit uninformed by the natural process of the human body.
