FSD is life changing for me because Im the type to cancel plans or not go places due to traffic or long drives. It caused me to be somewhat of a homebody. Now I don't even think about it since I know I won't be irritated en route. Last night my son wanted to go see Xmas lights about 30 miles away. I knew it would be bumper to bumper traffic the majority of the way but I didn't hesitate to go. It's great and I will purchase it as long as it's available.

One I left had me laughing after the fact when FSD made a rather late and aggressive break on the highway and I had to hit the break peddle. I have no idea how FSD will deal with a Canadian winter where the road and everything around it is hidden by a recent snow storm before it is plowed. We are used to inferring where the road is by memory, and with "hints" like wire posts, gutter valleys, roads signs, and other landmarks. I remember driving through a valley with the road hidden by windblown snow flowing across the road like a low-lying fog. It wasn't snowing.

Great video / conversation. On a recent drive with 12.5.4 - the car did a couple of really amazing moves that had me go, 'wow' did it just do that. 1 - on a two lane road, where it merges into one, a driver decided to make a left turn suddenly. The car immediately reacts and swerves around the other car, maintaining speed (no signal) and that was with another car behind me with a decent gap. Let me impressed at the quick processing. 2 - While in fsd got caught at the tail end of 4 way intersection when all the other cars stopped due to a red light and I was the last car in the pile. I pressed the pedal to inch up the car Infront of me to mitigate being stuck at the intersection to the best of my abilities. The car instead threw on the turn signal (seemingly ignoring my pedal press) when into the open lane and kept it moving. That's when I thought to myself 'Oh duh, why didn't I think of that'. Again impressed. Other issues that Chris said are still there on 12.5.4 . Divining under the set limit (with a max of 5 over) despite good weather and clear conditions is annoying. And occasionally not getting out of the turning lane when it had to drive straight. So I'm looking forward to try v13 or the next public version when the trial on my 24 model y runs out.

It's a type of monte carlo search. The car is picking some likely scenarios and runs them as a simulation. Whenever it finds a scenario that is not comfortable (too hard breaking or near collision) it abandons it and runs other searches. It then picks the most comfortable and safe option. The ride becomes insanely comfortable if you can run these scenarios fast enough.

don't forget the source of the knowledge from which FSD get's its instruction... it's from videos of people driving. and people DO turn right on red at locations where signs are placed to prevent it. and people DO turn left from straight-ahead lanes to prevent further dangerous congestion. so the precedent has been set by the "instructors". and they are just videos of people driving responsibly. at least i HOPE that the videos are being edited for safe driving habits! makes perfect sense. remember...there is no code in FSD that specifically addresses any particular series of driving situations, it's all, in essence, about mimicry.

A couple people commented that a haze builds up on the front camera possibly due to off gassing. Some cleaned it themselves and others had service do it. AI driver said he didn't have the issue so maybe it is something fixable like haze causing the light to refract

@@iainmrodgers9991 I have had that idea. Affix a polarized film over the front cameras. If applied on the outside of windshield, hopefully sticky stuff on the film would be sufficient to keep the wipers from tearing it off windshield.

@@gsmith2520 Maybe the software needs more data on sun glare. If just put a polarized filter I think software can do it too.

These guys are anthropomorphizing the FSD which from a technical point of view is as useful and accurate as saying lightning is caused by the sky gods being angry. Good for banter, that’s about it. I would love to understand how FSD really works, but you need to be at the table with the architects at Tesla doing the design to get there.

Today's AI is very different than hand coded computer software. The majority of experts in the field agree that today's AI does not think or understand in the way humans do. Nonetheless, a number of researchers believe that while AI does not understand in a human sense, it exhibits a form of functional intelligence. This means AI can perform tasks that require a level of problem-solving and adaptation, which can be seen as a type of intelligence.

I agree, machine learning is totally different. It’s a mathematical construct, not a combination of loops and conditional statements like non ML coding. It’s very important to understand what ML systems are doing, but the kind of analysis here is not rigorous and useful to understand a system like FSD. This concept that ML systems like FSD are thinking is not rigorous, understanding FSD would require mathematical analysis which is hard, anthropomorphizing is easy, but ignores the actual reality of what the system is, it’s a complicated mathematical framework.

@@jablock1 You should hit the books or take a few classes at MIT, Stanford etc. They are available. These guys are not software engineers.

@@dylanthomas12321 I did watch the first few lectures of CS224w from Stanford on graph theory which give an idea of how ML can apply to predictions in the context of a graph network, which satisfies my casual interest. I can see how that class is the roots of where systems like alpha fold came from. Lectures are great for gaining knowledge. I have even used ChatGPT to ask questions about LLMs that I had when I was looking into that. It was an amazing resource because it answered my questions that were very specific, something I would ask a professor or classmate that I couldn’t get from watching a video. So there’s that resource too. I wish I was 25 years younger and in college now, I could learn so much more productively!

Can someone show a video of it in narrow country lanes with oncoming traffic

Yea, be impressed if this worked in the UKs rural roads, sometimes single lane with passing places,
