If you have the closed captions on, at 24:27, regarding Oscar Hammerstein II it states: "Sadly, Hammerstein passed away in 1960, effectively ending the partnership with Rogers. Edelweiss, a moving anthem from the 1959 Broadway production of The Sound of Music, was the last song Hammerstein wrote." Wonder why that got edited out.

When I was a kid, they used to have a "Sunday matinee" on TV at about 1:30 pm (I've never worked out why "matinee", which comes from the French for morning, is used for afternoon showings 😂), after the quiz "University Challenge" (I think it was based on the American "College Bowl". It's still running, but changed channels to the BBC a long time ago). This was Mum's "sacred time". She was a very hard working lady - full time tough job and 4 daughters - and despite Dad's own hard steelworks job, he insisted that we give her that time to relax (he would've laid down in a puddle for her to walk over; she would've walked miles around the puddle to stop him doing it. They were married for 60 years and he never got over losing her 😥). We could join her, but not speak except during the adverts. She'd always send one of us to the sweetshop at the bottom of our street in the morning to buy "a quarter" (of a pound) of sweets for the postprandial dessert, sometimes her choice other times she let us choose. The shop had rows of tubs of dozens of different sweets on a few shelves, as well as the typical individually wrapped ones. We always got something from the shelves! We'd have dinner made, eaten and cleaned up by 1pm (anything left to do by then was quietly done by us whilst she put her feet up), and we silently joined her. It was how we got some sweets that afternoon lol. Anyway, I saw a lot of old films (this was back in the 1970s), including many you mentioned. How Green Was My Valley was loved but did give us a few giggles because we're Welsh. We appreciated the cultural bits they got right, but some of it was distinctly _not_ really Welsh! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Thanks for these, you took me back to those wonderful times with "Mam". I lost her 12 years ago last September, and Dad 5 years later (his heart had broken - literally as well as figuratively 😢) but there are still a few days when such bittersweet memories catch me out. Sunday afternoons being one of them. ❤ I am genuinely grateful for this video, so thank you very much. 😊

Growing up in an era when old films were on tv all the time I realized I have seen many of these already. However, how Silence of the Lumps won that many awards, or was even nominated is just absurd. The story makes almost no sense, it's a police proceedural where the clues don't pan out and the subject matter is just morbid. You explain it.
@scottishfilmhistorian
@scottishfilmhistorian 2 ай бұрын
Great acting. You can't say Hopkins wasn't fantastic in that role. It's right up there with Gary Oldman in Leon and Bela Lugosi in Dracula with the creation of an archetypal villain. It also has a unique plot, which actually makes sense if you think about it, even though it is a bit out there. Being morbid doesn't mean the film is bad. Parasite is morbid as well and you aren't challenging its win. SotL was also based on a book which always helps when it comes to award season as people have a reference point for how the movie should work already and the film works well.
@alg11297
@alg11297 2 ай бұрын
@@scottishfilmhistorian Actually after seeing the film, I thought it was so awful I went out and got the book. It was basically word for word the film. Pulp fiction crap at it's best. Hopkins was made to look ominous by lighting his face from below; something we kids did on Halloween with a flashlight below our chins. Jody Foster's accent came and went and she was not terribly convincing. You'd wonder why the FBI would send a rookie agent to question a guy who has been in prison for many years about a current serial killer. A tv show I used to like called Criminal Minds had a group of FBI agents chasing a serial killer each week. They would catch him through clues that made sense and had quirky characters as the FBI behavior specilsts. It was much more entertaining that this film. Oh by the way, just to show how silly the movie is I made up this little piece of dialogue: Have the lambs stopped screaming, Clarice? Lambs bleat you idiot. Over rated trash with more Oscar wins than Ben Hur.....tell me about it.

#1 Awesome purple and white shirt, those are the school colors of BPS (Burwell Public Schools) AKA District 100! x Wings reminds me of all the Red Baron frozen pizzas I eat! 💰📦 x The only public musical I have ever attended was Irving Berlin's White Christmas. o The film is being re-released in theaters on December 15, 2024 (on my Associate Degrees graduation day). x For All Quiet on the Western Front... o I am German American. o I have watched the film and read the classic book. o There are remakes of the film in 1979 (my birth year) and my graduation year of 2022. x In the film Cimarron, there is a character called "The Kid" and that was my nickname (often also referred to as "Kid") my freshmas year of Doane University. x Grand Hotel was described as the "Oceans Eleven of its time" and Oceans Eleven was the #1 film on my 22nd birthday. x In Cavalcade, the song Auld Lang Syne is played and this last year New Year's Eve I watched Snoopy Presents: For Auld Lang Syne. x In the film It Happened One Night, a Greyhound bus is prominently featured in the film. o My car broke down and the first (and only) Greyhound bus I took started in St. Joseph, Missouri, which is the birthplace of Marshall Bruce Mathers III AKA Eminem o Some think that Bugs Bunny was inspired by the film, he is a character I watched all the time as a child when we watched Looney Tunes. x The real-life Captain Bligh died on December 7, 1817, exactly 162 years before I was born (December 7, 1979). o There is a Simpson's episode that includes a parody on Mutiny on the Bounty, it is called "The Wettest Stories Ever Told" (was that pre-code? ;) ) x One of the hits on the film The Great Ziegfeld is The Three Musketeers. o One of my two favorite candy bars is the Three Musketeers. x Emile Zola was played by Paul Muni, who previously won the Academy Award for playing Louis Pateur (in the film The Story of Louis Pasteur), a person who we heard about a lot in microbiology class (for my Health Sciences Associates) x You Can't Take it with you comes from the play of the same name by George S. Kaufman. o My elder brother's wife has the maiden name of Kaufman. x For Gone with the Wind: o I read the book. o It premiered on December 15, 1939, exactly 83 years before I graduated with my Associates Degrees (December 15, 2022). x I watched Rebecca for the interterm class at Doane, it was Films of Alfred Hitchcock. o The name of the valedictorian of my high school class, who I was a classmate of for twelve straight years, was Rebecca. o I am also facebook friends with the Rebecca "Becca" Swanson AKA the "Strongest Woman in the World" x I was born in Valley county. x "Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that brought the U.S. into the war, the garden scene was re-filmed to reflect the tough, new spirit of a nation at war." (wikipedia) - I was born on Pearl Harbor Day. x For Casablanca...Sydney Greenstreet plays Signor Ferrari and there is a Ferrari Pinewood Derby car on my desk right now (I made it when I was in Cub Scouts) o Darth Vader may not have said "Luke I am your father" but when James Earl Jones came to Doane for a presentation...there was a Q & A period after his speech and some student said "Can you speak as Darth Vader?" and the first, and only thing he said through that voice was "Luke I am your father." x In the film Going My Way is The Metropolitan Opera (the Met), which was founded in 1883 (the same year my hometown of Burwell was platted). x The Lost Weekend has delirium tremens in it, a condition that is discussed a lot at nursing homes (some of the residents are lifetime alcoholics). x Frederic March is in The Best Years of Our Lives and the film Little Women (2019), with premiered on my 40th birthday, focuses on the March family. x Gentleman's Agreement has John Garfield in it and I lived in Garfield County the first 18 years of my life. x A Hamlet is "a small village or group of houses" (Collins Dictionary) and there is actually a place called Hamlet in Nebraska (Hamlet, Nebraska with a population of 57). x I read the book All The King's Men and watched the 2006 remake of the film. o In the remake Sean Penn plays Willie Stark, an interesting choice because his family name is the same as the maiden name of the author's mother (Robert Penn Warren). x All About Eve "is based on the 1946 short story "The Wisdom of Eve" by Mary Orr" (wikipedia) and the first female governor of Nebraska was Kay A. Orr. x Gene Kelly has almost the same family name in spelling and the same family name in pronunciation as one of the two girls who showed me how to slow dance for B.A.D. (Burwell Against Drugs) dances at the Parish Community center, her name is Chris Kelley (I was a 7th grader and she was a 12th grader/Senior). x My parents went to the Circus World - Wisconsin Historical Society, which included the original winter quarters home of the Ringling Bros. x From Here to Eternity included the events of the Pearl Harbor Bombing (I was born on Pearl Harbor Day). o Rudyard Kipling wrote The Jungle Book, and I lived in The Jungle at Doane University. o Montgomery Clift is originally from Nebraska

(wikipedia) x My father went on two mission trips to Africa, he went to Ghana. x I used to talk to Corkey Ford who played Manny in Platoon. o Ford worked at a local convenience store called Roc's Stop and Shop and was really into the local dog network. o Tom Berenger is also an alumni of the University of Missouri x Empress Dowager Cixi is played by Lisa Lu, Lisa also being the name of one of my cats (who sleeps on my bed every night!) x My friend and last roommate at Doane University was an extra in Rain Man. o My friend was born on the 4th of July and Tom Cruise's next film release was Born on the Fourth of July. x Morgan Freeman starred on the film and from my 1st-12th grade years we lived at the Freeman house. o The house was sold to us by a relative whose last name was Freeman. x When I went to 4-H camp, the kid I hung out with had the last name of Dunbar, like Lt. John J. Dunbar from the film. o My best friend in high school went out with his sister (another Dunbar) o My elder brother would later become buddies with his brother (another Dunbar) x When I lived on 1st Floor Frees at Doane, we often watched Space Odyssey 2001. o Hal was an unforgettable villian! x William Munny is sometimes characterized as an anti-hero...the #1 hit on my 43rd birthday was "Anti-hero" by Taylor Swift. o It was in Big Whiskey, and whiskey would later be my hard alcohol of choice. o It was also in Wyoming, a state I would later live in for a travel nursing assignment. o Another Best Picture which included Morgan Freeman, also when we were living at the Freeman house. x Spielberg has a song named Sawyer and I have a nephew of that name. o Spielberg is also born in the same month (December) and has the same Zodiac Sign (Sagittarius) as me. x Forest Gump played for the University of Alabama, and Alabama won the National championship in football in 1979 (my birth year) o My younger borther has all or most of the film lines memorized. x On Braveheart, there is a character named Campbell (played by James Cosmo). o Campbell is the family name of the only other student that graduated with me for the Master's Program at the University of Missouri. o Mel Gibson's breakout role was as Max Rockatansky in the film Mad Max (1979). x Hana, played by Juliette Binoche, is a combat nurse. o Demi Moore is one of the most famous actors named Moore, the family name of my paternal grandmother. x For the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator), Kate Winslet is the ENFJ type (same as me). o I went to many different ENFJ Facebook pages to test to see how similar of systems of thoughts ENFJs maintain and confirmed that it is so similar it is hard to believe! x On the film Shakespeare In Love, Viola de Lesseps does a speech from Two Gentlemen of Verona and I went to the same play at Shakespeare in the Cementery in Lincoln, Nebraska. x A significant part of the film American Beauty is the red roses and I graduated nursing school on National Red Rose Day (June 12th) o Kevin Spacey's character is Lester Burnham, the same family name as one of my friends and one of the four other students in my kindergarten class (we would later be classmates in junior high and high school). † For that Burnham, my father was actually classmates of both his father and mother (he dropped out and started school again, switching classes) † For that Burnham, he later owned a hunting range and became friends with Blake Shelton (who stopped by to hunt), getting invitations to go to his house and things like guitars and free concert tickets from both him and Gwen Stefani. x Gladiator was released on May 5, 2000, exactly 22 years before I graduated with my Health Sciences Associate (May 5, 2022). o Russell Crowe's performance as Maximus Decimus Meridius is one of my favorite acting performances of all time. o It is interesting when Commodus (played by Joaquin Phoenix) was talking about virtues he didn't have as there were real Roman virtues that were well-known at that time in history. x I am really glad that A Beautiful Mind won Best Picture the year I graduated college, anyone who has never watched the film would be really impressed! o Russell Crowe was on the last two Best Pictures while I was at college. o I am really glad Jennifer Connelly won Best Supporting Actress, I have watched her films most of my life. o The film took place at Princeton, the school that possibly had the first tiger mascot for a college in the country (Doane's mascot is the tiger). x My theater teacher and head of Doane Players (the theater club at Doane) has the family name of Hart like Roxie Hart, played by Renée Zellweger in the film Chicago. x I read all three Lord of the Rings books the summer before Lord of the Rings: Return of the King was released. o I also listened to a lot of Led Zeppelin during that time also, probably the best known rock band that are Lord of the Rings fans. x Hillary Swank is from Nebraska. o I graduated from the Master's program on her birthday (July 30th) and Million Dollar Baby was released later that year (2004). o Million Dollar Baby was released on December 15, 2004, exactly 18 years before I would graduate with my Associates Degrees on December 15, 2022. x One nickname of my younger brother is Crash. x Departed is a euphemism for "dead; deceased" (Collins Dictionary), which makes sense because of the string of deaths at the end of the film. x Josh James Brolin has the same middle name as I do. o The music for No Country for Old Men is by Carter Burwell and my hometown is Burwell (Nebraska). o The film premiered exactly five years (May 19, 2007) after I graduated college at Doane University (May 19, 2002). o Javier Bardiem was fantastic in his role as the villian! x Who wants to be a Millionaire? was the most popular game show while I was a student at Doane University. x Anthony Mackie, who was on TWO films that were released the day I graduated the Master's program at the University of Missouri, is also on The Hurt Locker. o My mother's physical therapist has the family name of Renner (like Jeremy Renner). x The Kings Speech was directed by Tom Hooper and I had a quadmate that was from Hooper, Nebraska. x In The Artist "The film's climactic scene is set to Bernard Herrmann's "Scène d'amour" from his score to Alfred Hitchcock's film Vertigo" and Vertigo is my favorite film. x For two ties to The Most Famous Ben in the World! (Ben Affleck) ...the Hostage situation was the big event of 1979 (Ben Affleck directed Argo) and Affleck was also in the film Pearl Harbor...My name is also Ben and I was born on Pearl Harbor Day in 1979. x Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Solomon in the film and the first person I ever met that I shared a birthday with is named Solomon (we actually also share a birthdate) x Tony Hawk was very popular when I was at Doane and his nickname is Birdman. x Spotlight's soundtrack was written and composed by Howard Shore and the previous first lady of Nebraska was Susanne Shore (who was also a former nurse). x I became interested in hanging out with cats after a there was a full moon and a bunch of the community cats were rolling around in the moonlight. x Speaking of matadors, my aunt and I went to a bullfight at the Plaza de Toros when I was spending a semester in Spain. x Don Shirley is a pianist... my mother plays and teaches piano. x Bong Joon-ho majored in Sociology at Yonsei University, that is what I majored in for both college and graduate school. x Nomadland was the second Best Picture to be filmed at least partially in Nebraska, the other being Terms of Endearment. x There is a Led Zeppelin compilation album named Coda. x Michelle Yeoh is a celebrity that I share an outrageous amount of similarities with, I would write a book about that. o Just for starters, she has films that reference a tiger, a dragon, an owl, The Mummy, Star Trek, etc. ...

#2 x Marlon Brando is from Nebraska. x Marty was directed by Delbert Mann and my only roommate (and later only permanent apartmentmate, there was a two-month guest) that I lived with the entire time I was a student at the University of Missouri had the last name of Mann. o I had a classmate, from 1st to 12th grade, that had the name Marty (he was one of around fourteen classmates in the beginning, another being Rebecca). x Sarah Bareilles, the most famous person I share a birthdate with, is the balloon guide for the music video Hot Air Balloon Song on the tv series Community. o I also read the book Around the World in 80 Days. x The part about the film The Bridge on the River Kwai that is the most disturbing to me is that, because there is a bureaucracy and orders everywhere, Alec Guinness's character Colonel Nicholson is just following orders without any thought. o He is really just a person so bureaucratic that he no longer realizes what he is doing. o It is interesting how he just can't stop being bureaucratic, even when he is committing treason. o I suppose those types of conflict are what makes a great drama. x In the film Gigi, Gaston goes to Monte Carlo and I had a 1986 Monte Carlo for my last vehicle in high school. o My brothers and I all owned that car at one point. o It was DA BOMB. x I had a housemate named Ben Hurt (only one letter off). x Hal Smith plays Santa Claus in the film The Apartment, I have played Santa Claus six times already (including four Christmas programs). x West Side Story has the Sharks (in 2023 I watched the four Jaws films from December 4-7, one a day ending on my birthday) and The Jets (the current coach of the New York Jets, Robert Saleh, was born in 1979). x When I smoked cigarettes in the past, I smoked Camel Lights. x My father was born in Jones Canyon, he was a home birth. x The soundtrack of My Fair Lady was on the Columbia Record label and there was a song called "Show me"...for grad school I lived in Columbia in the "Show-Me" state (Missouri). x Ben Wright plays Herr Zeller on The Sound of Music...interesting because my name is Ben and my grandmother, who married into the family, previously had the family name of Wright. x I have a friend named Vanessa who I met when we worked at Tag. o She could possibly have been the tallest person in the state of Nebraska at the time when I met here, she is 6'7". x Sidney Poitier "lived with his family on Cat Island until he was ten" (wikipedia). o I have never seen the area before but it somes incredible! x Oliver, along with Lord of the Flies, are two stories that seem to resonate with the childhoods of Gen X'ers. x I used to do research on groups like pick-up artists and "seduction artists," there are places all over the internet that they exchange ideas and stories. x George C. Scott is an alumni of the University of Missouri. x The French Connection was based on the book of the same name by Robin Moore, who has the same family name as my paternal grandmother. x My godfather (and godmother) own the hometown movie theater. x I worked as a Sting, for a short time, when I went around to convenience stores to see if the clerks were asking for IDs for cigarettes (they would get a card if they did and would get in trouble if they didn't, I quit after finding out how badly they were penalized). x Robert De Niro was the first actor that I wanted to watch all his films, Alfredo James Pacino has the same middle name as me (James), and Ellen Burstyn has the same birthday as me (December 7th) x I graduated from Nursing school in 2015 and Nurse Ratched is one of the most famous nurses in popular culture. x When I watched the first Rocky film, I was shocked that he lost the championship match (I was not aware of that before I watched the film). o The song "Eye of the Tiger" is part of the Rocky franchise, and both Doane University and the University of Missouri have tigers as mascots. o Michael B. Jordan and I have the same birthdate number, 36 (2-9-1987= 2+9+1+9+8+7=36) x A former girlfriend of mine has the name Annie. o She would be interested in the fashion choices of Annie in the film because she was a fashion major at Stevens College in Columbia, Missouri. x My elder brother's in-laws are intense deer hunters and practice the skill all the time. x Meryl Streep is the actor that has the most rites-of-passage stamps on my life. o Just to name a few, the songs "I have a Dream" and "Take a Chance on me" by ABBA were released as a single on my birthdate (on the Mama Mia films), she released a film on the day I graduated from the Master's Program (The Manchurian Candidate), and premiered a film on my 40th birthday (Little Women). x Alvin Sargent wrote the screenplay, and Sargent, Nebraska is one of the local communities that participates the most with my hometown. x Harold Abrahams was played by Ben Cross, Ben also being my name. x Mahatma Gandhi is a Life Path 9, also known as the Humanitarian. o That can be calculated by adding the numbers of the birthday (10-2-1869=1+0+2+1+8+6+9=27) and then adding the total (27=2+7=9). o Also, for the second Best Picture film in a row the main character is played by someone named Ben.
