Years ago when I was in middle school we were taught that James Watt invented the steam engine. I even did a report on the Industrial Revolution and remember pulling that info from my textbook. Goes to show that textbook publishers don't always research their material.

Remember the importance of capital. You can invent what like in a feudal society but unless you have the ear of the monarch you are screwed. Capitalism has many problems but it does raise capital.

How does capitalism help here? If you don't have the money you don't have the money. If nobody is willing to fund you nobody is going to fund you. And if somebody is going to fund you depends on if the rich people are willing to lend you an ear and if you can convince them. Be it a bank, an investor or a lord or king or whatever. And while there is a certain incentive to improve products and invent there are also an incredible amount of products where marketing outweighs all other factors by quite a lot and the same incentive has always existed before as well.

You know you missed the true starting point, in both time and location. Davinci, Galileo and the rest of the 14th century innovators. Without their inventions, thoughts and ideas changing much of the world's thinking the entire industrialization you talk about in this vid would never have happened. So you can lay the entire industrial revolution on the 14th century Italians.
