#24 Actually, it's not a scam. Those colonies didn't have the industry to build any machines, trains, ships, etc. So they selled resources the British needed and the British sold them machines they needed to progress. It was a beneficial relationship. Not a scam.

Unfortunately, while some leaders reaped the benefits, most of the people of the colony were under the oppression of the colonizing country. Forced to produce at high demands, loss of other resources, loss of local government control, countries left with little once the colonizers leave...not the best situation...
@stuartnicklin650
@stuartnicklin650 8 жыл бұрын
+C Mc this is nonsense on a number of levels. firstly, there were two types of colony in a legal sense. crown colonies and governed colonies. places like Canada and Oz, were very sparsely populated and so the actual population would be British. secondly, most of the crown colonies were in a pre modern state, before the Brits, so the population were most likely starving, with elites very heavily oppressing their own people. thirdly, with the exception of India, all the colonies received more investment in, than the British took out, throughout the time of the British empire. and fourthly, people in Britain were also heavily oppressed by their own elites. this is not exhaustive.
@stuartnicklin650
@stuartnicklin650 8 жыл бұрын
+C Mc and Britain was not the first empire, with colonies taken from more oppressive empires.

@@stuartnicklin650 yep england especially (which is who I am an "Englishman") got done by 4 empires before the english empire and then the british empire after Ireland whales england and Scotland came together (then Ireland went in 1916 but not north of Ireland creating United Kingdom of great Britain and Northern Ireland)

The luddites weren't _just_ "opposed to progress", they were _also_ (guild) craftsmen that would be put out of a job because of technical innovation that didn't require the skill of years. Basically, they were overskilled and such would not be paid like they used to be.

list25, is a super entertaining channel; but this list contains very many factual inaccuracies. Russia contained very few industrial workers at the time of the revolution; which was not connected to their 'rights', which is an anachronism. The British state changed gov, and was at war more often; than any other state in Europe. More like it was the high cost of labour that created the situation where building machines was economical. stock markets precede industrialisation; for example the south sea bubble. this video is very American, yet it was Germany who were the largest economy in 1900. I have now checked out AHH, and its quite a silly channel. Don't do your homework off of that; read books written by experts instead.
@ankelaostheweird905

+stuart Nicklin Uhh... What? Can you more clearly list which number was inaccurate? I mean... You've only stated a few. You trying to say that communication did not improve? Also didn't the Russians want rights to control when the hell they can go to war or more rights to more supportive resources in the form of socialism?
@stuartnicklin650
@stuartnicklin650 8 жыл бұрын
+Wizard Gamer I don't know what you mean, I have given multiple examples. I'm not watching it again. It was back to front in terms of cause and effect, for example, central banks and stock markets were the cause, and not the effect of industrialisation. And alot of it was to do with wages, as you are building thousands of machines and rolling them out over the economy and that only makes sense if wages are very high. And the politics is all wrong, they are called privileges not rights, in the period. And no state develops by literally being stable, it's conflict that is the dynamic of development. This is not for homework

Well, there were a lot of reasons it happened in Britain first. The government there was very friendly toward entrepreneurship for example. The enlightenment was in full swing there. People were open to new ideas. Also, the geography. They had large coal deposits next to ports. etc. It was way more than just political stability.

"What if the 'industrial revolution' never happened?" That's a really tough question. I imagine we wouldn't be commenting and seeing each other today. If you're interested in this phenomenon, I recommend Jared Diamond's book "Collapse". There are a lot of good ideas in there. Nice to see Mike, and wish the other could show his face. I'm from the town Richard trevithick was from, it's also where the safety fuse was invented, and can say you really didn't get the pronunciation right 😁 we have a song around here about his first steam engine called 'going up Camborne hill'. The replica of his first engine repeats this event every year in the town and is quite fun to watch. The original was destroyed in an explosion because trevithick decided to celebrate in a pub without shutting it down. He ended up dying a pauper but some say that to raise money while in Africa to get home he sold George Stephenson the rights to his invention we all know as the steam locomotive.

It's funny to see history teachers talking about bad labor conditions and children in factories as if such thing didn't happen before. Do you think that rural workers used to be like "yay, I'm so happy here under this hot sun and with calluses in the hands by grabbing this hoe"? And that kids didn't help the adults in the agricultural labor? Wealth is not a fixed pie. It is created. The fact that people from the "burgeoisie" got rich doesn't mean that the "proletariat" got poor. On the contrary. It is thanks to Industrial Revolution that middle class became the major demographic force. Just read Ludwig von Mises and other authors from the Austrian School.

Thomas Newcomen invented an Atmospheric Pump, not a Steam Engine. It provided Atmospheric Power. James Watt didn't improve Newcomen's Atmospheric Pump, it couldn't be improved. Watt dumped Newcomen's Atmospheric Power and Arkwright's Water-Power for Steam Power. To achieve that, he had to invent a new engine, the world's first PRACTICAL High Pressure Steam Powered Engine. Then? An Industrial Revolution! It was the one and only invention that caused it.

#16: It's a common misconception that Robert Fulton's first steamboat was named the "Clermont". It was actually named "The North River Steam Boat". The name "Clermont", to the best of my research, didn't come about until the 1930's, when a replica of the revolutionary vessel was being built for a film. Fun fact: Robert Fulton had originally proposed his idea to Napoleon Bonaparte and had intended to sell his revolutionary steamboat concept to the French. Napoleon, however, turned him down, saying "You would make a ship sail against the wind and currents by lighting a bonfire under her decks? I pray you excuse me. I have no time to listen to such nonsense." So Fulton returned to America and built the "North River Steam Boat" instead.
