Hi friends! I'm away on vacation at the moment and to ease the workload I have been going through some previously-lost Oceanliner Designs videos and republishing them. This one was a casualty of a copyright takedown and it has been re-worked and re-uploaded for you to enjoy again for the first time in over a year. This is one of the first videos I made in conjunction with the legends at Titanic Honor and Glory! I hope you like it :) ~Mike

Watched the program on holiday, had books and a book that made 3 different paper models. 1 was half the titanic showing rooms and I was always fascinated by the pool. The wreck was discovered 16 days after my 9th birthday. I read the Dec 85 issue of National Geographic and absolutely marveled at the pictures of the wreck contained within and the words by Robert Ballard describing what it was like to lay the first eyes on this ship in 73 years. And so began a lifelong fascination with Titanic and her story. I used to have reservations about the recovery of artifacts from the sea floor. I was of the opinion that they should be left alone out of reverence and respect to those that died there. But after seeing the exhibit at the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas, seeing the personal items made me think and wonder about the people that that owned and used these things. I thought about the lives they must have lived, the people they knew and loved and the hopeful futures they were looking forward to that never came. I thought about everything that these items had seen and been through to eventually make their way to me. It made me feel connected in a way to the people that were there, those that survived and perished both. It was a bittersweet experience.

Growing up in the Chelsea section of Manhattan in the 1960s and early 70s, I got used to hearing the distinctive whistles of different oceanliners and seeing them glide by on the Hudson, towering over the low-rise industrial buildings near the docks. The most distinctive whistle I remember is that of the SS France (launched 1960). Her whistle was deep and sonerous -- more a horn than a whistle. I always knew when she was going by. She was decommissioned in 1974, then rechristened the Norway and refitted as a cruise ship. She was finally scrapped in 2005 after a boiler explosion killed 8 crew members in 2003, but she wasn't the ship she used to be. It was a sad end to a magnificent lady. And I still remember her deep whistle!

I really hate that I have to correct our friend Mike Brady, but in 6:32 he said something incorrect. He said that Robert Ballard and his team were "shocked" to find the Titanic in 2 pieces. Actually Ballard gambled on that, because if the ship did split in half (as some of the survivors claimed), there will be a debris trail, which will be much easier to find that the ship itself.

I downloaded that demo of Honor and Glory and man, I hope they're able to finish that project because I'll gladly pay money for a complete recreation of this beautiful ship. Modern ships are cool, but nothing compares to that classic design of that period. Even simple everyday things were ornate works of art made by hand. I love the convenience of modernity, but it sure isn't as beautiful as these things were.

Outstanding work, as usual. However, I must disagree with your statement that Robert Ballard was somehow "shocked" to discover the wreck in two large sections. You are right that the official opinion was that it sank intact, but, as Ballard has said many times over the past nearly 40 years, his strategy for finding the wreck site was based on following a debris field. Had it sunk intact, that would have been a very miniscule target on the bottom of a very deep and wide location. He assumed a large debris field existed, which is exactly how he was able to find it. He did say he was surprised by the distance between the bow and stern sections, though.

This might sound.. odd.. but hearing her whistle just made me tear up a little? she's been silent for so so long and to have that one moment of her voice back its just.. idk I'm not sure how to describe it, bitter sweet? also the renders of the insides are stunning.. I again, oddly, feel like I could imagine what they smell like? again I know thats a super weird thing but like, Idk, that mix of old with salt and .. for lack of better terms, the living. I honestly am not even sure what I'm tryna say, or if anyone else relates, might just be a weird thing of mine-

This has me wondering if the Olympics whistles were salvaged before it was scrapped. I thought that I had heard about the Titanic's whistles being recovered, it's amazing that they were in good enough condition, so that they could be heard again. That must have been Eerie and Haunting for them as they put the air into the Titanic's whistles for the first time, actually being the first people since 1912 to hear them again.

There is nothing quite as legendary as the RMS Titanic, and it grows bigger every single day.

I agree with the preservation of wrecks but I feel we need to preserve everything we can and put things in museums while it’s still possible

The Titanics anchors will last for many thousands of years on the seabed. The entire ship will just be a rusty stain on the seafloor in about 350 years from now but her capstans and anchors will remain, these huge solid blocks of steel and bronze will take many thousands of years to erode. (porcelain will also remain as it changes very very slowly)

Materials that will survive many thousands of years on the sea floor are glass, brass, bronze, stainless steel, copper, porcelain, marble and huge metal objects such as her chains, capstans and anchors. If I have missed a material, please add it with an addendum reply.

I don’t know why, when you said we would find you in the engine room, I imagined you showing up there, right out of 2024, in the middle of the voyage. “Who is that and how did he get in here?” “He says he’s our friend Mike Brady”

5:24 What is that plastic bottle or even candle looking item in front of the whistles? Almost looks like it's got some googly eyes on some packaging. And I'm wondering if it's from the Titanic or some modern pollution.

Despite eyewitness testimonies that Titanic broke in 2 when she sank, the inquiry ruled she sank in one piece.

While cruise ships today are rather opulant, the ocean liners of the time were the most beautiful and majestic. I was on the Sun Princess back in 1979, which was actually the first LOVE BOAT, and it was closer to the grandeur of the ocean liners, than to the modern cruise ships. The ones from today look like tacky floating shopping malls, and, nowadays are more like zoos, since of seen so many cruise ship fight videos in the last few years and the people there act like animals.

Man, I remember when they found the bent hull pieces. It was quite a discovery, extremely exciting. Changed everything. Always nice to think back, and to plot forward. What else are we going to find?

They were probably more horrified that so many people died, especially since they knew people lost on that ship.

As an engineer, Mike, I'd like to see an expedition to raise those two double-bottom sections along with the five single-ended boilers from the No.1 boiler-room and the parts of the two triple-expansion engines broken off raised and be given anti-corrosion treatment before being displayed in a suitable museum (Harland and Wolfe would no doubt want to examine them).

I've never understood the surprise that she broke in two or the experts' insistence she sank intact. The survivors stated the ship broke. I will never understand why their accounts of the sinking were discounted.

The size of the whistles amazes me, for some reason I always kind of imagined the whistles would be something reasonably large but could say sit on your desk for example but 15" diameter, 4ft high, that pretty much blew my mind!
