You mentioned kidnapping as a common Mafia tool circa 1910. My family migrated from Italy to America, one branch in 1890 the other branch in 1914. They settled in New York State. My grandmother was almost a victim of a kidnapping when she was 15, for the purpose of forcing her to marry the guy who employed the would be kidnappers. They didn't succeed. So within hours she married a man who became my mother's father.

@old man strength reread my post. Within hours of escaping that near kidnapping, she married a man who became my mother's father. In other words, my mother was the daughter of the man that Grandma married because she escaped from the forced marriage attempt by the criminal. Get it now?

My great grandparents came to America from Austria through Ellis Island. After some family obligations they lived on the Southside of Chicago. They were renting at the time. In their mail one day was an unmarked envelope in it was a piece of paper with a black hand drawn on it. This meant you crossed the wrong person and were marked for arson or something along those lines. My great grandmother had no fear she marched down to the Alderman's office. She shoved the paper at him and when he saw it his eyes got really big. He said don't worry this is a mistake you have nothing to worry about and that he would take care of things. He did. It was a mistake. Chicago, it is what it is. Or was.

Thank you for this amazing tale of somewhat family history. On my mother's side of the family came from Sicily through Ellis Island. I had a third cousin (who lived to be 95) tell me the story of his father after coming over got a job with the "black hand" as an enforcer. My cousin never gave me the full story after that. His father did live to be well in his 70"s after they moved to Long Branch, NJ

Sweating means forcing someone to confess. So more than likely they beat or tortured him until he sang. I looked more into this incident and read that the boy's father also went missing- momentarily.... whatever that means. I tried to look more into that and couldn't find anything.

Thank you for telling his story and visiting his grave. You did a good job and were very respectful. Walter was a distant cousin of mine. I did not know this story until recently. It was such a heartbreak to his family. In fact, I think his father Peter died of a broken heart not long after. There are additional mysteries about what happened after. I do think most of those losers got off scot free, but I also think there was some vengeance for his death as well.

They used to be called "the Black Hand" in those days, not yet called Mafia or Cosa Nostra. They preyed on their own fellow Italian-Sicilian immigrants, because their fellow immigrants feared them, unlike the native born Americans. They would notify the families of a kidnapped victim by putting a piece of paper with a black handprint on it in the mailbox or under the door, with a note telling of their demands for money. I don't know if this happened in this particular case, but it probably did. I don't know why they would have tortured and mutilated this poor child, and then kill him, unless the child's father refused to give in to the Black Hands demands for money, after he was notified with the extortion letter.
