It's sad about how this man died but no one has a right to physically attack another person and expect not to be attacked back. It's like self-defense is a crime in the country and the person defending themselves is a murderer. This man caused his own demise the minute he attacked Mr. Howard. May he RIP.

Great advise. My dad said small potatoes big potatoes. Look at a situation or problem and think is this a small potato or a big one then if it’s a big one than deal with it. If not let it go. We know someone who makes big potatoes out of everything. I am a grandma now and she is turning 18 in a few weeks and somethings she says my hair turns greyer but hey I only say something if I feel maybe I can get her to see another way of looking at things, She is a great girl just has a lot of growing up to do. Hard to keep my mouth shut but it’s just best to let it go, she has to grow up like I had to, sometimes wonder if I was so immature ready to go on my own when I was her age haaaaaaaaaaa

My father is from Cleveland and was an adult when this happened. He’s told me a version of the story with some differences. I was told that when the Mrs. Howard came back to the line, Fitzpatrick said something along the lines of “Why’re you lettin’ that darky in front of you?” to the dad. Mr. Howard turns around and says “That’s my wife” and that’s when Fitzpatrick grabbed him. I was told Fitzpatrick knee’d Howard multiple times to the point of the bleeding. A blade was passed to Howard and that’s when the stabbing happened. That’s the version I learned from my dad.

I grew up across the street from Jack Fitzpatrick and his brother Tommy. Tommy got into some teenage trouble (something like stealing hubcaps I think) and was caught. The judge in the case told him he could go to jail or join the army. Tommy joined the army and was killed a few months later in Vietnam (in 1969), 2 years before Jack was killed. Tommy is buried in the same cemetery as Jack. Double tragedies for the Fitzpatrick family. 😢

Lamont, some great kernels of truth here. Letting things go, and maybe some implied Karma. In 8th grade i was a wimpy little guy. I was walking down hallway and accidentally bumped into a little wannabe gangbanger. Maybe he bumped me. I don't know. He sucker punched me good in the face. I just instantly reacted by lifting my arm to punch back, even though I never been in a fight ever. The vice principal was behind me and grabbed my arm, keeping me from punching. My jaw still pops to this day. That was in 1981. We both were suspended, even though I didn't do shit. I was a furious little nerd! 2 years later I was reading the newspaper (remember those?) and saw that that little punk had been shot in a drive by gang shooting, a tit for tat gang thing, and I saw that he was like 15 or 16, and I felt like throwing a party! Now I just realize what a waste of life that was, and maybe that could easily have been me dead at 16. That VP did me a favor. I didn't know it then, but I for sure do now. A lot of that crap will take care of itself...comes around goes around, etc. fyi, somehow I grew up and am a bigger than average guy and am here in 2022. I never in a million years imagined myself with a house, a job, kids, etc....life goes on! Stay safe out there!
