@@marissashantez6051 you are referring to the Queen mother here. Incidentally she and the King had a private bomb shelter that had all the trimmings. Also on that note I am so sure the people of London loved it when the Queen showed up with her pearls and furs while their homes and lives laid in ruins. You do know that the people were ready to tear the royal couple apart for those antics. They only came by once because they were told to stay away

Diana's bouquet! 💐 It was completely overlooked that it contained a LOT of stephanotis, a delicate star-shaped white flower that required special handling and was widely in use in the 1980s. You can see them in Diana’s bouquet, all strung together on a wire, forming some of the cascading elements of the bouquet. Stephanotis flowers are rarely used today, as the fashion for DIY and hand-tied bouquets in the 2000s rendered them unsuitable. They are best handled by professionals...I hope they make a comeback!

16:59 It notably took place at St. Paul's Cathedral, not Westminster Abbey, since the wedding was enormous and meant to befit a first in-line to the throne male. The TV viewing of the royal wedding of Diana and her prince made her dress look dull and sort of dowdy - it was NOT! I saw it in Brisbane when it was on the tour of Australia and found it stunning, gorgeous and utterly charming. For instance, her veil had tiny crystals scattered throughout it and it complemented her dress beautifully. One didn't see that on the screen. The dullness was caused by it not being white, plus TV did nothing to bring out the pearls or crystals, but in real life it was the loveliest wedding dress I've ever laid eyes upon. Diana was a romantic and wished her wedding gown to reflect that ideal; it did in every way possible and I'm sure she felt like a princess in it on her big day, and isn't that part of being a bride?

It was a truly global phenomena. I watched the Charles & Diana's Wedding live on BBC/Dutch tv - my Mom & I were glued to tv set. And her giant wedding dress (Diana was "only" 9 years older than me) fitted my idea of what a princess should look like. And also was the real beginning of 80's "overkill" (big is better). And went perfectly with the whole "fairy tale" dream wedding...that slowly became a nightmare...😔

I was sitting on the bed and when I saw it, I thought yuck! All that hype for weeks and weeks about what it was going to look like and then to see what I called a monstrosity. The volume of the dress succeeded in making her look petite, not like she was nearly six feet tall, so that’s something. She also lost a lot of weight during the engagement so the dress needed constant fittings beyond the usual needed for a custom dress. Silk taffeta is prone to wrinkling easily (and it’s a bee-yotch to handle and sew), so some people saw the wrinkles of just a characteristic of the material and not a detriment. Silk shantung or slubbed silk would have been more seasonally appropriate and wrinkle resistant, and is a similar weight to taffeta but more "forgiving" to handle. Funny it wasn’t chosen instead. The Emmanuels didn’t have a backup wedding dress on hand in case the design of the original was leaked. That was a rumor that was spread at the time of the wedding that they later repudiated. Funny that the story was repeated by the "fashion historian."

The dress by the Emmanuels is nearly identical to the one they made earlier that year for a friend of Charles's, whose wedding C&D attended. My favourite gown was the one worn by Princess Margaret. I saw photos of the wedding on TV as a young teen in England. My Mum took my brother & me up to London to visit Westminster Abbey right after and they had a small bouquet on the steps before the alter! I was thrilled. I have always thought that an immature Diana wanted all the bells & whistles on her gown and went a bit overboard so that the gown almost drowned out her own beauty which she discovered as she matured.

Elizabeth's second dress may have a 50s feel but fashion doesn't automatically change at the turn of the decade. It kind of fades in and out and 1961 would still have been appropriate to wear some 50s fashions, especially since people really loved the New Look. Plus, fashion would have taken a lot longer to evolve then since there wasn't social media which has made fashion a lot faster.
