It's always a bit strange to suggest something is of the wrong period. I can understand that being anachronistic when the style only existed after the period in which it is supposedly set. But to have Victorian clothing in the Edwardian Era? Surely that was quite common. I'm 40, and have clothes going back 20 or more years, and if they're well made and still fit, many more people will have kept their suits and dresses. Do people in charge of making costumes take this in to account, or must everything be exactly of the fashion of the day?
@oldasyouromens5 жыл бұрын
Please let Bernadette do some art for this series, as she once was a professional costume illustrator. The artist you currently have can't seem to get the silhouettes right, and the lines and details are very simplistic. It looks cartoonish and often un-period, and doesn't match in tone or style the expertise of the historians we see.

Regarding the “entire stuffed birds” Ms. Banner mentioned at 12:35: these highly elaborate hats may have been decorated with birds of paradise and similarly ostentatious tropical birds. The rarer the bird, the more en vogue the hat. This practice led directly to the founding of the Audubon Society. The desire to decorate one’s hat with an entire flock of bluebirds or a cloud of egret feathers was having devastating effects on bird populations.
@lizm925 жыл бұрын
If you're interested in the history of various uses for birds of paradise, you should read "The Feather Thief" which talks about the Victorian-style method of fly-fishing and features a person who robbed an important natural history museum to source bird feathers of this purpose. Amazing read about history and contemporary issues with "traditions" that harmed our world in the past.

For those who are interested in seeing a closer to history version of the Mary Poppins' Jolly Holiday dress, the presenter Bernadette Banner has recently finished with her reconstruction of the dress according to the historical aesthetics and silhouettes. 10/10 recommend watching it, her cinematography and explanations remain beautiful throughout much like her explanations in this video

That's how you make someone check the historical accuracy of a look in the movie, congratulations, Bernadette! You can see she really knows what she's talking about, rather than someone who doesn't even know the difference between stays and a corset.

@cometkatt4 жыл бұрын
@@clairefazel8470 until about 1800, women wore garments that were known as (a pair of) stays or (a pair of) bodies. The term "corset" only came in later. the terms "stays" and "corset" are often used to differentiate between the pre-1800 and the post-1800 shape *its a bit more complicated than that but its a very basic explaination.. and if you are interested if fun Interesting things like that Do check out Bernadettes you tubes.. she is an AMAZING seamstress.. just understand she is a master in her craft and fun too..
@irEyERWO4 жыл бұрын
@@clairefazel8470 stays were mostly used before 1800. The easiest way to determine them is that they have straps on the shoulders and they open up through laces at the back, and have a wooden busk in the front. They are also mostly stiffened with cords and has no metal. Corsets on the other hand has a metal busk and opens up at the front, and the lacing at the back is more for adjustment of the corset. They're also stiffened with whalebone.

It actually makes sense that Mary Poppins' "workaday" clothes would be a little simpler, narrower, and older than the fashion magazines, so the old hat is forgivable due to accuracy, as servant women often wore out of date clothes and cast offs.

I just found this series (loving it!) and I wanted to give some insight to the observation at 6:00 My grandfather was the set designer for this movie. At the time, he was married to Julie Andrews. Her silky slip was an intentional anachronism to show that Mary Poppins was "especially naughty," according to my grandfather and Julie. She also wears an orange petticoat for the same reason!
