“If a woman smiles, her dress must also smile.” - Madeleine Vionnet
Madeleine Vionnet is regarded by Fashion Historians as one of Europe's greatest couturiers, famous for pioneering the revolutionary 'bias-cut' and changing the shape of women's fashion, however, today she is widely unknown.
Referred to as an "architect among dressmakers", Vionnet's chic, free-flowing garments flattered the curves and forms of the female body, encouraging women to abandon their cumbersome corsets.
Vionnet’s dresses had structures that had never been seen before. From their cut and type and uses of fabric, to their decorations and stitching techniques, each had a unique individuality.
Due to her reserved nature, she may not have obtained the same attention as some of her contemporaries, but this can never discredit both the importance and relevance of Madeleine Vionnet’s work.

She is without a doubt the greatest! I saw an 80 year old black satin dress of hers that would be absolutely perfect today!! Now that is designing!

OMG this is my favorite designer now, fabulous! You know you could take any one of the dresses after 1920 and wear it today and the 1930s are to die for, they put the current gowns you see on celebs to shame! Thank you for this episode Scott, I was awed, entertained and educated, can’t ask for more. Who will it be next?, love the suspense. Stay safe and stay happy.👏👏👍👍🌹

Thanks Jean, and I agree! Vionnet’s designs are timeless! I do normally set out a rough plan for episodes but things sometimes change! Lol! As soon as I know who/what’s next I’ll post on Instagram! As always I’m glad you enjoyed and learned something. Have a great weekend and chat soon! 😊

"We should not dress with a pencil but start using the fabric." I feel like many clothes today are actually ill fitted and unflattering because they look good only on paper. Again, I love how those pearls look on you. 😍

Hi Scott, I have before me a fabulous article about Madeleine Vionnet and the techniques she used. written by Betty Kirke. It appeared in 'Threads' Feb/Mar 1989. Betty met her in 1974 or 75.

I think its unfortunate Vionnet couldn't be revived i feel there's an opportunity for it to be picked up by an architect designer like Iris Van herpen, I think some of the geometry could be translated into beautiful bags, perfumes, accessories.

To create like Vionnet or Balenciaga takes supreme artistry and incredible discipline of execution ...something rare today and very difficult to pull off successfully .

Well, by facts, this is a fine documentary, very fine. But sorry writing this, the pronouncation of French terms is really horrible. As a fact: good work.
