It’s an illusion. Yes, many of them were pretty, but they had LOTS of help to look glamorous… hairdressers, makeup artists, wardrobe mistresses, lighting directors. The “glamour” was dictated by the studios that those actresses were under contract to.

What we all need to bear in mind is the fact that we are looking at 1940s Hollywood stars highly stylised and dressed up to the nines, not at everyday outfits that ordinary women would wear on everyday basis, especially in Europe, at that time. Judging by the comments some viewers seem to think women used to look like that :-)

@@larrywakeman4371 Sorry, but I doubt it, unless your family were really well-off and upper-crust. Anyway, one must be over ninety to really REMEMBER that era.Take a look at some authentic footage from the 1940s taken on a weekday on an ordinary street. Even film stars did not look back then like they do in these glamorous photos :-)

The fashion style of the ‘30’s and ‘40’s was so feminine and elegant. The average woman couldn’t dress as expensively as these gorgeous Hollywood women, but they did dress with suits, hats, gloves, nylons….some “fully fashioned”. I wish the styles today would become more like the style of those years, we’ve allowed styles to become too revealing, vulgar and sloppy.

Great job on this video Ava. Truly the 40-60 era of clothing was beautiful. Men& Women truly were more for and trim. Knew how to dress for sure . Seems the black women, and men along with white men and women had the Vogue Look through and through. Again appreciate your research and well rounded video on the 1940's ERA.. 🌹💎❤️💯🔥⚓🕯️

There's way too many beauties to list you'd need a part 2-200 for this and I thought it was nice I just discovered this and love it my late grandpa's second cousin was a model and movie actress from this era her name was Linda Darnell and I've seen many things like this and usually she's on them haha but like I said too many to count and you did a fine job and the actresses now can't hold a matchstick to these actresses from then

I was puzzled about that too. Just didn't know who it was instead. So thanks for bringing that to my attention. I noticed she had bigger eyes than Ava, and not the same characteristic chin. She was exstremely beautiful, almost surpassing Ava :-) I love the feminine elegance, these women radiated. So naturally beautiful and sensuous, but never vulgar or distasteful. Strong and confident - yet alluringly feminine. They had style and they had class. Also the men was so maskuline and debonair. So much of this is sadly lost to day.

@edshoaff3055 Жыл бұрын
Veronica Lake had such delicate features and was one of the shortest actresses at the time in Hollywood. Rita Hayworth had the best cheekbones with Maureen O’Hara coming in at a close 2nd. The picture of Joan Crawford at 11:23 (to the right) was taken when she made the film THE WOMEN in 1939…at the time she was 34 and it is obvious that she had her 1st facelift because her look dramatically changed from her earlier pictures around that time. The 40’s were my favorite era for fashion but they were not “good old days” because of misogyny, racism & homophobia that was so prevalent back then.

Amen brother!!! When I go to the grocery store a lot of men comment on how i don't have tattoos, and dress properly. At first I didnt know what they meant until my husband told me they probably meant that i dress conservatively and very feminine. My parents grew up in the 40s and I myself am 40. They taught me that women don't gamble, drink, nor smoke, that's a mans thing. Also, we live in the South so you never leave home unless your makeup is on and hair done.
