Fast and Easy Black Armor for Black Templar | 40k

In this video I demonstrate a fast method for black metallic armor, great for mechanized or armored units in your wargames, such as Warhammer 40k. My model of choice - a Space Wolf - but painted in Black Templar style!

looks good, but definitely more iron warrior than Black templar. maybe try a double coat the first time, then high silver drybrush, then a thin coat. and use the chipping to add highlights where appropriate

My go-to method right now is: * Basecoat the glowy area with a light grey, a tan or something on those lines * Put pure white on the areas that should be the brightest * Cover the whole thing with a fluorescent paint of your choice. Super fast, super easy, works well :D I've seen slower-but-still-fast variations with ink to cover the surroundings that should look even nicer :D

@@jherazob That's pretty much the same as my fast method, but right before i add the fluorescent paint, I add a black ink wash or contrast paint around the edges of the eye, to make the glowing part really stand out.

Don't want to be rude but... This is the Iron Warriors scheme. The colour is metal and the panoplia is black and yellow chevrons.

That's not rude :) I'm gonna be honest - I don't know squat about space marines - I'm AdMech all the way :) I was just picking colors I thought looked cool together, accidentally painted the Iron Warriors colors!

(I'm an AdMech guy) I just knew that the new Black Templar box was out, thought I'd make a vid on how to paint black armor for them. I don't own any Black Templars - GW sent us a box, but it went to my partner in England - I'm in Canada. That lucky bugger...

Really great tutorial, I used different colours but the same techniques to paint blood angels, (primer/basecoat mephiston red, white scar drybrush, and blood angels red contrast straight from the pot for anybody wondering

The black with one more light coat would be amazing for my ravenguard i like the lighter black for tabletop. With yours i can still see alot of detail its not muted

Now try this with the grey Army Painter Speedpaint, it went away fast from flat surfaces, so might be even faster than this process :)

This isn't fast, easy OR BLACK! This is just gunmetal the long way. Which you could have done in 1 coat if you started with with Army Painter Gun Metal primer, and done a black wash or thinned contrast black wash. If you want actual black, why not start with uniform grey prime and do a black contrast layer that will give you an actual non metallic black? Also if you want a dark black metal, Army painter makes a paint called Night Scales that is literally black metallic. Then you can just do 1 drybrush with any level of silver you like.

I do black armor 3 different ways: The first (and my favorite) is a base coat of German Grey (Vallejo), panel line with black contrast, then edge highlight with German Field Grey. The second is prime black, paint with a mix 50:50 gunmetal & black, then a wash of Nuln Oil gloss (makes a very shiny darkened gunmetal). The method in this vid is the 3rd. I know it comes across as "shiny" in the still pics, but it's very dark & matte. The intense light from my studio lamps is reflecting off the metal undercoat :) The methods you mentioned definitely get the job done, and would produce yet another, different looking black! I was just demonstrating 1 of many methods ;)

Question: If you were to do this using Black Legion, would you still suggest the same ratios to thin it? Would you expect it to look similar but with better coverage on the flats?

Black Legion is quite a bit darker. I'd probably add a little more medium, but honestly I'd have to test it out!

I'm not sure if you'll see this comment, with how long ago this tutorial was released, but I figure I'd ask anyways. This is a fantastic paint scheme. Do you think this would work with Deathwatch? The silver seems like it could blend in a lot with the silver of the right shoulder. I'm trying to find alternative methods to painting my Deathwatch army black, and this seems like it could work.

I did this a year or two ago I think. It's a darker black in person - my studio lights are super bright and are picking up the silver undercoat :) I still like this color scheme.

I like the technique but as others have said doesn't seem that great for Black Templars, as it's not black enough and too shiny. I think that style could work great for say Iron Hands though!

Would like to see the same technique, but with a full strength black Contrast. Looks too dark silver to me for "black armor". Nice looking mini though.

Its nice but this is more reminiscent of Ironhands colourscheme or even iron warriors with the yellow accent and chevons. Still gd video for tips 👍. P.S. thats not a jump-jet pack, just a standard sm power pack (on a phobos armour), to operate the suits mechanics & electronics.

Thank you - I didn't "think" it was a jet pack, but someone told me it was, sarcastically I now realize haha :) This is actually my first space marine - I normally paint AdMech and Orks :) This was a fun project though - I'll do some research on the Iron Hands!

Those Hazard Stripes and that darker metallic finish got me thinkin' about Iron alright...just not Hands. IRON WITHIN - IRON WITHOUT!

Black-ish? 😉 My normal black is German Grey from Vallejo, panel line with black contrast, then edge highlight with German Field Grey. But that's a very matte black - very cool looking though, imo.

@@WatchItPaintIt I too use German Grey up to London Grey for a "Black". I wash it w/ thinned Drakenhof Nightshade or *super* thinned Leviadon Blue to get a cooler Blue-Black. Glad to meet another German Grey fan :)

Yeah the bright lights make the undercoat of silver shine through, but in normal light conditions it's looks "blacker" :)

This is not really a black armor, if ypu want black armor - go undiluted black templar contrast straight from the pot and ull get it.

I guess a better description would be "blackened" armor. It looks black in person, looks more like "blackened gunmetal" under bright lights & a camera. I do have a truly black armor method that I'll show at some point :)

Getting a decent looking black color scheme is actually relatively difficult for beginners. Oftentimes they look smudgy or chalky bc they just did one thick layer otherwise some may also prime something black and assume they're done rather than applying other colors such as gray for highlights and midtones.

I'm going to assume you don't paint miniatures :) The top painters in the world have videos on how to paint black armor, and they are among their most viewed videos: Marco Frisoni & Angel Giraldez for example.
