How fast I can ride my commute? This was the first warm(ish) day of the spring (20.5.2022), so I decided to try how this Milan velomobile flies.

I comute on a speed pedelec (so it is an UP), and I have nearly the same average speed. My power meter and my battery consumption tell me, that I have a combined power output of about 900 Watt (16Wh/km motor*42km + 230W/h human power, the comute is one hour). So the velomobile is extremly efficent, consuming only less then a quarter.

@@Terra_Lopez The videos are not sped up. This is real. I drove with velomobiles, too (don't have my own yet). Outside of a city, you are better on a bicycle path or small roads. In cities, you better drive on the street. You can't accelerate as fast as a car, but your speed matches after acceleration.

The track is good, but you know what's missing? the perfect video to go with your track. You are in your velomobile, riding through a city, like Las Vegas, or New York City. set up the camera right behind you, while you ride through the city at night, all the bright lights shining on you, the reflection lighting up the side of your velomobile as you roll by. occasionally speeding up the footage real fast, so you get light trails off of all the bright city lights, and all that while playing your audio track. yep. the ultimate audio/video experience. 💥🤯💥💯💯💯

I didn't watch any of your commute videos before - so, based on the assumption that nothing but the 2 traffic lights would slow you down, I guessed a wildly optimistic 30 minutes. Never been in a velomobile yet - just by the assumption that the Milan SL is one of the fastest velomobiles out there... Mind you, if it took you 34 minutes, I'd probably take around 55...

I've always sworn the fastest weather is light rain. Preferably a break in the rain. I never understood why, until one day it hit me. Rain is often the result of low air pressure, low air pressure means less air resistance.

Well, you have simply so lovely commute. Nice wide dedicated (mostly 🙂) paths... 25km with 10m of climbing is SO flat and comfy! My daily ride is way shorter (like 5km) and I have to deal with almost 100 of vertical meters. I just have to laugh to your phobia of those frost bumps - I'd love to have those as my worst enemy to deal with! 😀 Just a question: How's maneuverability of your velo? Some corners look like you''re on max of capabilities and have to cut it to make it through...

Excelente video... Saludos!

Last year I bought my first recumbent bike, a used Bacchetta Giro. It is a lot of fun, much more comfortable and faster than my mountain bike, or diamond frame road bikes. A month ago I bought my first trike, a used Catrike 700. The trike is very quick, even faster than my recumbent bike, I like going fast. So the next logical step would be a velomobile. Of all the Velomobiles you have written personally, which one is the fastest? One thing about the cat trike 700 is that the ride is very firm very stiff no suspension travel at all. Do velomobiles have suspension, and if so how much travel?

@4nz-nl
@4nz-nl 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, there is a crumple zone. The Milan is very well design for both front and rear impact, and you're so far reclined that you won't "fly through the windshield" that easily. Side impact is the biggest problem of almost all velomobiles (maybe except Quatrevelo and Alpha 9/M9). Last things last: if all people would actually ride this instead of drive a car, crumple zones would be a lot less important...

Two reasons the Milan accelerates worse than the QV: The drivetrain is less rigid and seems to run in a less ideal line than that of the Quatrevelo. I'll upload a video on that rigidity issue to Instagram soon. Also, because you are more reclined, it's harder to put out big power (but you do get used to it to an extent). The aerodynamic design makes up for most of the aforementioned power loss. I must say though: Your power output seems quite high for the speed I see you riding with a Milan SL + BM hood (comparing to my commutes with the Milan GT Mk6, with clothes, laptops, screen, shoes etc.). Is the aligment okay? What tires are you running? Or do you REALLY have shitty asphalt over there? 🤣
@TheVelomobileChannel
@TheVelomobileChannel 2 жыл бұрын
I have same feeling about the power. It seems high. But I do have 2 cameras mounted, which ruins the aerodynamics. According to my test, cameras add about 10 watts. I have checked the alignment according to manufacturers instructions. Though not sure should I trust them. Maybe I have to check it again with my own method 🤔
@veloalien3201
@veloalien3201 2 жыл бұрын
Milan is low to the ground which leaves very little room for the drivetrain. maximum chainring for milan is 60 tooth, over that you will create to much tension on the chain inside the tubes which causes more friction. i tried 80tooth and 60 tooth, with 60 you will be much "faster" what i mean is that you will create less resistance on the chain and save watts. also optimum weight for milan is 70 kilograms. the wheels are pretty much straight to the ground, if you weight more then 70 kilogramms it will create more friction by bending the wheels and wheelalligment is bad if you weight more then 70 kilos. especially in corners. this is not the case with df or alpha7 where the wheels are more "diagonal" since the start if you put lots of weight they go forward. milan is good bike for skinny high RPM guys then it will be the fastest VM today.
@4nz-nl
@4nz-nl 2 жыл бұрын
@@veloalien3201 I'm surprised by your statement. Run a 65 in my Milan (GT) myself but I see a lot of torquey guys run a 75 or 80 tooth in their SL and they go fast as hell. Also, the GT corners like on rails, I literally haven't been in a velomobile which drives better (I have quite a bit of track experience in cars, and my former vms were QV+, DF XL, Quest). Lastly: I used to be closer to 100 kg but now I'm 95, always travel with lots of luggage and the wheels are fine. I did have problems with earlier TL-ready wheels (some Italian brand I believe), but my current AlexRims are fine for about 15000 km now.

@@veloalien3201 I'm aware of the differences - own both a GT and an SL ;) The SL is a little bit more tippy but except from it being waaay too small for me, it doesn't feel like a terrible different vehicle. Also, I'm not sure whether it came with the 63 or 70 tooth I have here, but I tend to think it's the 70 (as the other one came with a DF).

I guess 22 minutes to work edit: ok that was a dumb guess, I have watched pretty much every video and your commute is not the best for velomobiles and In my head I assumed you would average 45kph or so. Do you feel like it would be inconsiderate to go on the highway instead of the bike paths or is there a rule against it? I use bike paths most of the time but not when they force me to cross many intersections or business entrances because it is either dangerous or way slower than the road.

In the city during rush hour the bike parh is faster. And technically it’s forbidden to ride on road if bikepath is available. With lot of traffic and rumblestrips, I feel more comfortable on the bike path, which I know quite well. But if I go to another city, then I prefer to ride on the road (even though technically I’m not allowed), because I don’t feel comfortable riding on unknown bike path.
