Hey Pard , how goes..I do F/D out in the uk and I use a gun that was popular in the 70s..its called a "SLICK GUN" its got no trigger or hand and the bolt and a trigger rounded stub are all one, you fire and then press the trigger stub and move the hammer back a little, then turn the cylinder on by hand till it locks, this means no moving parts except the hammer .. the hammer itself has the teeth removed to allow smooth flow, this gun I know would not be allowed in comp , but its the only way I know to stop overroll and other problems ya get with shooting at speed..as you know its blanks only over here..my ol faithful is a western marshal made in 1972 in 22 blank 7 1/2" , only othet guy I know who used long barrel was Andy Anderson , thats fitting as I use a AA rig..love your vids and please come back over..adios amigo

I don't suppose you can do a video on the modifications on the guns? It's impossible to find anything on guns for thumbing. Do they just slick up the action? Or do they actually mess with timing so that the momentum carries the cylinder the rest of the way. I was told no modifications really needed to be done for thumbing because it wasn't really that hard on the guns. I noticed the first guy you interviewed said he liked the Taylors and company over the Ruger because it couldn't over index, what did he mean by that?
@fastdraw1016 жыл бұрын
For this type of Fast Draw (CFDA, WFPG) you're not allowed to do many modifications. The gun must be pretty much as it came from the factory. You can smooth the knurling on the hammer because it's sometimes sharp, which can cut into your thumb. You can also remove the front sight (I just filed mine down so it was sighted in correctly). Other that that you can smooth the action, and when I bought my last gun I simply watched a few KZbin videos on how to smooth the actions on Ruger Vaqeuros, and did that.

@@fastdraw101 thanks! I have a pair of Taylors and Co floral engraved cattleman but if I'm reluctant to use them for this. I was considering just getting a Ruger new vaquero because I don't want to go wailing on my cattlemen if it's going to destroy them. This very much a learn as I go affair. Most message boards say go to a local fast draw club and ask questions but there are none around me so I'm flying solo on most of this. I would like to try and drum up local interest once I've figured out what I'm doing.
@kopperheadkid36855 жыл бұрын
I didnt say they couldn't..I've had it happen with mine, but when the Taylor's does over index it's a tell tale sign the trigger spring is failing. Ruger has a different design on theirs with a plunger spring.

Can you practice fast draw using a Colt 45 air pistol by Umarex?
@fastdraw1015 жыл бұрын
I haven't seen them before, but just now watched a video of the Umarex Colts. They do look like they'd work on a metal target. You may have bounce-back with the pellet, but if you wear the proper eye protection (which we use for wax bullets since they also bounce back a bit), you should reduce that danger. My main concern would be with the ability of the gun to hold up to the speed thumbing or fanning we do in Fast Draw.Even very sturdy real guns sometimes have issues, and pellet guns often don't use metal that's as strong.

I'm glad that New York type gun laws are not going on here. We know those kind of gun laws only disarms honest lawful people and promotes more gun crime. Here everybody and their mother has guns and no shooting because we even have the right to protect our self but the left is trying to take both of those rights away nation wide. Fast draw is fun and getting it out fast is the easy part. The hard part is hitting what you want. Once you mastered both speed and what you want to hit, good to go. Be careful because doing that could cause your self great harm if you make a mistake. This is why this is one of the reasons the old timers never had Hollywood high noon gun fights for real like you see on TV shows or movies.

does a ASG Dan Wesson 715 6" Revolver Co2 Airsoft Pistol also good for quick shot? I play airsoft but I am not sure if this airsoft gun can do fastdraw because of its size,
@fastdraw1012 жыл бұрын
Hello. Sorry, but I don't know much about airsoft guns, but I doubt it would work well. The forces exerted on a gun can be extreme when you get good at fast draw, and there are even some real guns that can't hold up to those strains. I've seen many guns wrecked after only a few hundred shots from parts wearing out very quickly. Many guns just weren't designed to take these stresses without undergoing some specific tuning to smooth them out. Airsoft guns generally don't use as strong metals as real gun because they don't need it since there aren't as many stresses on the gun as shooting real bullets, so I'd think they would wear out even faster. The Japanese do use airsoft type guns due to the laws in their country where they can't use real guns, but only from one manufacturer that is only available in Japan that was specifically designed to deal with the stresses of fast draw.

@fastdraw1012 жыл бұрын
Hi MW. I like a heavier gun for spinning, so I have the original Ruger Vaquero that is probably the largest 4 5/8" barreled single-action there is at 2.5 lbs. I find with the lighter guns if I don't catch them cleanly during a toss they tend to fly away and I drop them, but with the heavier guns they stay in place more, and give me a second chance to grab them before they fly off. Unfortunatly that wasn't me you saw. I've been asked by some vendors to man their booth at the Shot Show a few times, but always had other things going on so couldn't do it. I'm guessing it was my friend, Joey Dillon, a great spinner who I've competed against quite a few times, and I know he performed at the Shot Show. Thanks for watching the videos.

So there's no rimfire fast draw competitions? I'm honestly kind of shocked given the ubiquity of .22 single action pistols...could you give some recommendations for a rimfire for spinning/trick shooting?
@fastdraw1012 жыл бұрын
Yes, and no. In general there isn't, mainly due to the targets used in Fast Draw. With the wax bullets you need to have a relatively large bullet for it to fly the 15' to the target with enough force to hit it an stop the sensor, and .22 isn't that consistent due to the smaller size. When shooting at the balloon targets with blanks you need to have as much grainy un-burnt powder flying downrange as possible to break the balloon at 8', and .22s can't hold enough powder for that. However, in WFDA and some other organizations you can use .22 black powder blanks in some special "converter" .45 shells where the .22 is offset in the base in the shell so the center-fire firing pin will hit the rim of the .22 blank. You can view the video at kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3TPiadonMmKqKs that shows those.
@maxmccullough85482 жыл бұрын
@@fastdraw101 Interesting, and thanks for the reply. I'm sort of surprised though given Japanese competitions do it with cap guns (admittedly really cool ones) and airsoft revolvers, and noting the low entry price and wide availability of .22 single action revolvers, that nobody is sanctioning rimfire competitions. Love your videos! I figure you'd have to use "rat shot" or some sort of custom ammunition (hot glue, wax?) to pop balloons or maybe .22 short gallery loads....this might be something fun to experiment with since I recently got some .22 reloading equipment.
@fastdraw1012 жыл бұрын
@@maxmccullough8548 It's the different rules. Here in North America the balloons are at 8 feet, while in Japan they do it at 14 inches specifically because of the low blast from their guns. Each set of rules were created for the type of guns they are allowed to use. I get your interest, but that's just the way it's evolved. I believe there was a a group in Deadwood, SD that was using .22s for Fast Draw with their own rules, but I think they mainly went to the CFDA rules in the early 2000s and .45. Good luck with it.

This looks fun as all get out, but how do you guys aim from the hip? I can shoot passably with my single action (or any other pistol from a snubnose .38 to a kentucky caplock) one handed but am wondering how you work out your aim? Like to try it someday, myself. Picking up a .45 colt Uberti tomorrow (only had .22 ruger until now).
@fastdraw1013 жыл бұрын
Howdy, LR. It all comes down to practice. You can learn to hip-shoot pretty quickly and learn what to do to hit the target, so concentrate on that to start with. When you practice enough you will learn how to line yourself up and the right amount of draw and wrist bending to do to get the shot on target, then it's simply constant practice so it becomes second-nature so you can get your times down. It's when you can do it without even thinking about it that you'll get to the top level.

Maybe a stupid question but I’ve never seen anyone try a quick draw as a cross draw. Surely if it was used in the old west it had some merit and could be used effectively? Wild be interesting to see
@fastdraw1014 жыл бұрын
Hello Hayden. Sorry, but cross-draw is not allowed in the sport because the shooters must face directly down-range at the targets, and a cross-draw not done perfectly will generally result in sweeping the shooter themselves or the other shooters or spectators beside or behind them with the barrel. With an accidental discharge from early trigger contact it would result in someone being shot.

Can a 5.5 inch barrel be drawn faster?
@fastdraw1012 жыл бұрын
Since we try to snap the gun up and in-line with the target as soon as possible when the tip of the barrel clears the top lip of the holster, any added length to the barrel delays that action, so the shorter 4.75 barrel would be faster if you're doing that style of shooting. It may only be a few thousandths of a second, but I've seen many matches decided by 0.001 of a second, so any shortening of the draw is advantageous.

¿Can a single action revolver can work like a real revolver? I mean, I don't want to hurt anyone or animals, I just want to learn how to spin a gun or make fast draws
@fastdraw1014 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but I'm not exactly sure what you mean. A single-action revolver is a real revolver. If you're wondering if you can use a replica non-firing gun, then "yes", you can use that for gun spinning. That's how I started. I bought a replica non-firing Colt .45 single-action and learned spinning for a few years before buying a real gun when I got into fast draw. You can try fast draw with a replica, but you won't know where your shot is going, so if you want to try that you will probably want a real gun and try it with wax bullets or maybe a laser cartridge. I don't know of any replica non-firing guns that take a laser cartridge, so there's no way around getting a real gun to try that.

I would love to see a historical fast draw match where instead of race guns and holsters the shooters use actual historical style holsters and guns that have not been customized. Now that would be cool to watch. Watching the fast draw competition is like watching NASCAR. There hasn't been a stock car on the track in decades... LOL
@fastdraw1013 жыл бұрын
I'm not quite sure what you mean. None of the guns in this video have been customized in any way. Some have had the action tuned to make them smoother, but that's just like the gunfighters did in the old west. Also, the holsters used by these shooters are the Mexican Loop design, which is a historically accurate. The style of fast draw with customized guns is not done that much these days.
@gomezy3k3 жыл бұрын
@@fastdraw101 I have watched quite a few of the "fast draw" videos and yes some of the holsters are Mexican loop in the barest sense of the word..they are cut down and barely there. I imagine most are plastic or metal lined which was no doubt rare in the old west. and tied down guns were about as rare as hens teeth in the old west. I was surprised to see somone using a "Slim Jim" style holster. And I have seen several videos where the gun hammer has been modified so that a finger from the off hand can be used to "fan" the hammer. A light action job I can see but I get suspicious about some of the guns.

Oh left out, I would love to see someone fast draw with a C&B revolver, now that would be fun to watch..and yes it can be done, I have loaded my .44 Remington with a couple grains of powder and filled the cylinder with cream of wheat (basically made a SASS Mouse Fart Load), put in a wax bullet and tried it... It was actually rather fun...
@fastdraw1013 жыл бұрын
@@gomezy3k - I see. I do have some videos showing the modified guns with turned-up fanning hammers, but I'd guess that these days at least 80% of Fast Draw is using the stock guns and Mexican Loop or Slim Jim holsters (Slim Jim specifically for use with the guns with 7.5" barrels in CFDA). No modifications to the guns except for removing the sights, smoothing the hammer knurls, and a tune job are allowed (all or which was done by gunfighters in the old west), and only leather and stitching is allowed for holsters used with this style, so no metal or plastic. The tie-downs are allowed, but that's a safety thing to prevent the holster sticking to the gun and riding up when you do the draw and causing a misfire inside the holster. I hope that helps explain things in the world of Fast Draw.
@fastdraw1013 жыл бұрын
One other thing... the tied-down holster was not used much in the old west as you mention, but in addition to the point above about the tie-down being used for safety, a large percentage of people carried their pistols in their coat or pants pockets or inside their waistband. But again that's a safety issue when doing Fast Draw since you don't want a round going off if fired a split second too early... you want to contain the blast in a holster instead of your inside your pants.
@phlather Жыл бұрын
how about fast draw for real life. serious question. just one shot.
@fastdraw101 Жыл бұрын
Hi William. Serious answer: There's no reason for me to do that. I know that for a single shot a lead bullet would go exactly where the wax bullet goes... the extra recoil would only come into play with multiple shots, which we don't do much of in the sport of Fast Draw. Also, when you're trying to shoot really fast just as you clear leather you usually put a shot down the holster every once in a while due to a brain-fart or too much of an itchy trigger finger, and the results just aren't worth it. The club I started with in Fast Draw used to shoot "real" ammo in the early days, and when the club switched to the safer ammo in the late 1950s some stayed with lead bullets, and a few of them put shots into their legs or knees. One of my friends met up with one of those guys decades later and he was walking with a limp and still had pain. That being the case, and knowing the results wouldn't be any different from a wax bullet, there's really nothing pushing me to try it with "real" ammo.
