Do you know, I'm 68 now and by far ELP were the best band I've ever seen. I'm a big fan of the Nice and ELP, you just don't get that music today, exciting, raw energy, brilliant musicians . I was lucky enough to see the nice and elp and those concerts will stick in my head forever. I don't think we will ever see hear music like this again and definitely not another Keith Emerson to watch that guy play was an experience I will never forget. I agree that theres not enough stuff out there of elp in concert, we see bits of concerts, somewhere in the vaults there must be full concerts on tape. RIP Keith and Greg and thanks for giving me the music I'd waited for for my teens upwards.

Yeah, as great as Rick Wakeman is, he's a notch or two below Keith. Keith was a true keyboard god. Darn shame that nerve damage severely affected his playing ability from the 90s (possibly even 80s) forward. Though he was still playing pretty well when I saw ELP during their Black Moon tour. If you haven't seen Rachel Flowers or Massimo Bucci perform ELP tunes, you're really missing out! Check them out! Both are phenomenal!

My mother always listened to classical music. She had a 10 lp box with greatest classical pieces. Great Gates of Kiev was one of them. So begin 70's I was 12. No rock pop for me. An outsider. Then one day the music teacher at school explained some classical music. Mussorgsky. He told about Pictures at sn Exihibition. That it was a piano piece, later orchestrated by Ravel and now reworked into rock. By ELP ... The teacher started the LP ... Great Gates of Kiev by ELP ... I was blown away. Suddenly I was launched from classical into rock. I knew the Gates. My school friends had no clue. I have been an ELP and later Nice fan ever since. But think the 68-74 era was the peak. ELP ... Shivers then, still shivers now

Says a lot about the music and the fans of the day that we loved and absorbed every note. Not because it was easy, but because it was creative, passionate and, to us at least, important. I haven't heard this stuff for maybe 30 years but I remembered every note of Keiths solo's (= the whole piece). If being old now is the price I pay for being young back then, I'll take it and be real grateful that I was there - especially if it means I can get out of this 2020/2021 BS soon and avoid the rush.

ELP were my life as a teenager aspiring musician. Their genius introduced me to classical music and jazz, and Keith gave me a life long love and obsession of synthesisers in music. Greg’s vocals were so smooth and his inspired guitar and bass playing was so magical and exactly right for the music always. Carl was an absolute powerhouse on every drum in the kit when he had to be then the simplest tap of a ride cymbal could sign the track off as perfect. I remember every note of every album and how it excited me as a teen. All great things have to end but they will never be forgotten as a seminal band whose music could never be replicated as they played and sang it. These were days before the advanced digital recording and multitrack programs of today and Keith wrestled with unstable monophonic Moogs that had to heat up and be regularly kept in check. I could sing their praises for ever but I will finish by saying long live Carl and rest in peace Keith and Greg, you mattered to me and shaped my musical life. Still you turn me on.

I know right? Seriously those early punk bands were morons for bashing bands like ELP. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. BOTH prog and punk could be radical. The main difference is that prog had more finesse to articulate the deeper subtler feelings of aggression in prog. Even Yes could do that at times with Relayer. And I never heard of any prog bands saying how bad punk rock was. Again those punk bands were just a bunch of braindead sissies.

@@hubbsllc I saw ELP in December of '73, on the 4th, a school night. My then 15 year old girlfriend's dad wasn't impressed that I bought tickets for the concert, without speaking to him about it. Saw Humble Pie the 7th, at the same venue, Cobo Arena. We were in "Tier A" for ELP, to the right of the stage, looking at it, and couldn't see Carl very well. Keith had stacks of equipment on that side, and it was hard to see Carl. No such problem looking at Jerry Shirley's kit, from up in "Tier C," where we were just left of center, looking at the stage. Jerry's Ludwig kit was white, and before their encore, the whole stage was dark, except for Jerry's kit, which had a purple light shining up, from under the drums, and a green and red light shining on his polished Zildjian cymbals. I can still SEE that colorful display, in my head--it was awesome, and describing it here is nothing like having seen it, in person... lol

I can't relate to it... suicide is the cowards way out. I do music and had nerve damage in my right wrist after many years of playing speed metal and prog rock. Ya know what I did ? ... I went to a hand surgeon, had surgery done, did 6 months of P/T ... problem solved. Even if it wouldn't have been solved ... I wouldn't have shot myself over it. I would've just found another career ... I'm very lucky though.

@@jamesschaidt1096 I don't view suicide as coward's way out...more something that is anathema and consequential under some religious theocracy....Emerson reportedly tried the expert route, various remedies and didn't enjoy good results. Remember, few have the musical prodigy and high self-standards, perfectionism of a Keith Emerson....the keys and his EVH mastery/speed/classical channeling of the keys were his life and soul. His passing is a loss for the arts and fans of his.

Greg Lake tirando o máximo de sua fantástica voz. Keith fazendo o que que queria nos teclados e Carl mandando muito bem na bateria. Como o tempo passa, eu tinha 11 anos nessa época.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always been an ELP fan, ever since high school, back about the time this video was filmed. Listen to the tempo of some of their live recordings, then listen to the albums. A LOT slower. Given that they performed countless times over the years, it’s no wonder Emerson wore his hands out. And of course, could not keep up with himself as he aged. Sad that he decided to take his own life rather than just slowing down and not try to keep up with the Keith Emerson of the 70s. RIP Keith and Greg. Thanks for the memories.

INSANE crowds ! But, I was in one of them, at August Jam 1974, Charlotte motor speedway in North Carolina and climbed the speaker tower in front of the stage to see Keith spin ! It's what I remember most from the weekend long concert.

Steve number 90....those are beautiful memories. Thanks for sharing such valuable life experiences here. That's gentle from you. I barely know people you can appreciate this music. And I'm 47. How would I've gone to every possible concert of ELP, if I were born earlier....! Thanks God, there are recordings left for us to hear/see!!! And, I think they are influencing even now a new generation of musicians....though it's too soon for this musicians of nowadays to be discovered, and payed attention , for the mainstream today is musically talking, mediocre...... Just let's wait, and we'll see something different. But ELP was, is and will ever be UNIQUE!!!

I was very fortunate to see them in a relatively small venue in Houston back in ‘72 or ‘73. Hoffeinz Pavillion on the University of Houston campus. Close your eyes and you would swear there must have been 4 or 5 people on stage performing instead of just 3.

I saw John Bonham, Cozy Powell, Aynsley Dunbar, Bill Ward, Ian Paice & 10 zillion other jazz , rock , fusion , drummers; Alan White And Bill Bruford. And 1 night round '77-'78 ELP & CARL PALMER brought some type of martial arts discipline to his drums & percussion. Best I ever saw live. There's been some jazz guys, up there too, in a different vein. Bonham was special. Never saw Bruford w/ the Fripp/Crimson thing & I never did see Keith Moon or Ginger Baker.... So..... IDK.... I don't remember Palmer getting the acclaim he should've
