Beautiful trim. You should have consulted a licensed Finish Carpenter because you might have overlooked the fire code on this one? Example: No combustible material should be within 12” from the top of the opening and 6” on either side of the opening. I would suggest finding ceramic/ porcelain tile that matches these wood planks above and to the sides of the opening to stay within fire code. Let us know if that applies. Thanks

Fabulous! My fireplace is dark, rough wood and I thought I was stuck with it, but now I see I can just build a new frame over it-no need to remove the existing finish, just cover!

nice work however. the other comments are correct there is a clearance to combustible issue. i have been in the chimney fireplace business my whole life. please don't use this fireplace. i understand you do not use the fireplace as you stated but please be aware that ordinary people watch these videos and will try to do the same type of work in their own house and probably will use their fireplace. i would suggest adding a disclaimer to the video explaining to check local building codes or nfpa 211 for clearance to combustibles or seek professional advice on doing such an installation. also to consider what if you sell the house are you going to rip down your work? this would be a huge red flag at home inspection. you have great videos. I'm not a hater just looking out for other people who may see this and do it in their own home and will have a fire.

As a certified chimney sweep this kind of stuff really irritates me. I go out to inspections on fireplaces on a daily basis and see work like this. Then I have to tell the home owner that is cannot be used until it is meeting the required clearances need to safely use, their disappointment falls back on the jerks like you. Trying to make things look pretty and “modern” before using your head and or common sense. Regardless if you know fire codes or not, this is clearly not acceptable… there is a fire that could be burned 2 feet away from the “pretty” wood you just charged them for. Oh, and it could possibly ignite! So I’m glad you charged them for labor and materials just to have them potentially burn their house down. What a bang up job man.

What are your thoughts on fire code? "R1003.12 Mantel and trim. Woodwork or other combustible materials shall not be placed within 6 inches (152 mm)of a fireplace opening. Combustible material within 12 inches (305 mm) of the fireplace opening shall not project more than 1 /8 inch (3.2 mm) for each 1-inch (25.4 mm) distance from such opening"

Masonry nails in vertical surface especially into concrete block will fail over time. If all of the block is concrete filled you could use 1/4" Tapcon screws or better yet use Red Head FS series sleeved anchor screws for block that's filled or hollow. Using masonry nails your blowing through the block and barely hitting enough concrete filling if you're even hitting it at all. Just my 2cents worth!

To all those that are concerned. Thanks for the concern on all the fire codes. This is my house and only a decorative piece. I never use the fireplace and never will. I am well aware of fire codes and if I planned on using it I would not have done what I did. I was going to tear out the fireplace but thought this would look cool. So once again, it is my house and no inspector is coming by that I know of.

Nice work and after reviewing other similar fireplace upgrades using wood either for structure or finish work the concerns about following fire code is very enlightening. Even as you mentioned about not ever using the fireplace I would hope that the next owner of your home does the same or at least the home inspection reveals the non-compliance to a prospective buyer. Safety first.

Love the white wash,But. A floating Mantel would look nice and you should of spaced the wood so you could put white stone filler to make the wood wrap look more uniform, The only fire code you should use when making a fire isn't to stick your finger in the flame..

You didn’t consider the fire code/ 6 inch from firebox openjng - around entirety- you placed the wood ship lathe up to edge of firebox opening -FIRE HAZARD!!! Also you were very sloppy like most contractors about placing your tools and caulk gun on clients personal furniture with no protection. I think this looks terrible- very crude - not professional and a fire hazard
@jarm5093 жыл бұрын
its shame to create such a fire hazard. the home will likely get sold someday, new homeowner will have a fire, burn house down then insurance will find this video and you'll be liable. especially after being told by many professional that what you did is UNSAFE! period.
@johnnycanosoda5 жыл бұрын
Maybe you should have taken a few more days and done the job correctly. The corners look unfinished, big gaps in between the boards, knotted cheap wood and no fire insulation board behind your wood. Man, I hope you don't plan on starting a fire in that tinder box cover-up. Maybe you should stick to doing ads for your music service and leave the construction for the big boys. Invest in a jointer and a planer?
