On this episode of "Notes on a Scene," Jack Gill, a stunt coordinator on "Fast Five," breaks down the car chase scene in the movie's climax as Vin Diesel and Paul Walker's characters steal $100 million dollars in a bank vault. Jack explains how the stunt team and director Justin Lin created the scene with largely practical effects including a real 9,000 pound steel vault dragged behind two Dodge Chargers.

Wow that stunt driver surrounded by dry ice in a closed space blindly steering while breathing air through a tube. Now that guy deserves recognition.

This guy is why the Academy should recognize stunt coordinators. They do a massive job that sells movies and the best ones can do it without death or injury
@gustafsone

I hate to be "that guy" because I actually agree with you, but they did show in this video a stunt guy getting thrown off of his motorcycle into a car, and he broke his shoulder when he landed because he wasn't able to position himself properly. So even the best stunt coordinators, and Jack Gill certainly is, will sometimes have injuries on set. They do their best to avoid accidents but the reason they need to use stunt actors in the first place is because there is always a possibility of injury, no matter how much safety is involved.

The final budget for the film was only $125 million relatively small for most tentpole films of this size. They spent around $25 million on this vault chase and the opening train heist alone. As we’ve seen it’s paid off and now subsequent entries after Fast Five all got $200 million plus budgets.
