Why do they switch directions on the tracks? I've seen them go opposite directions with a few hours in the same day!

I was wondering why during part of the day the eastbound train may be on the southern track and then later in the day they are on the northern track. I'm guessing it has something to do with the tracks. But if you know of a better reasoning, I'm all for it!!
