Learn this essential stop on roller skates with skater and trainer Lana Luvhurts.
The turnaround toe stop is one of the most useful stops for quad skating. This stop works at all speeds and has a short stopping distance so you can use it in tight situations and for sudden stops. It allows for a lot of precision, and you can easily adjust for your needs by modifying the pressure you put on your toe stops, your stance, and weight distribution.
This is my go-to stop for street skating because outdoor wheels make other stops difficult, it works on every surface I can skate on, and it's super fast.
The turnaround toe stop requires transitioning from forward to backwards skating. If you haven't learned how to transition yet or are still working on it, check out our Transitions video with a complete break down of the skill and tips: • HOW TO TRANSITION ON R...
It's important to have good quality toe stops. The hard plastic or very small toe stops that come with some beginner rec skates can be problematic. I personally use Roll-Line and Bionic because they work great for both derby and outdoor.
The height of your toe stops will affect how stable you feel at different stances, so that's something to experiment with, and keep in mind that what feels right in the beginning will likely change as you progress as a skater. Whatever the height, always make sure enough of the toe stop is screwed into the housing (about 1cm) to prevent stem breakage and damage to your plate, and that it's securely locked in place.
For roller derby, it's very useful to master this stop at different speeds, turning in both directions--and in both directions on the inside/outside boundaries, leading your stance with either leg (your leading leg determines what side you'll open to if an opponent pushes through you), and variations in your stance. Next level challenges might include lateral stops to the line with chest still forward, moving into one-footed toe stops (great jammer skill for getting by on the boundary); sprinting forward and using the turnaround stop to catch a runaway jammer; and what-next scenarios for linking up the turnaround stop with other skills (e.g. pivoting from backwards to forward blocking).
Thanks for watching, hope you enjoy! xx

As a derby ref (OPR usually), this is my go to stopping method. You can really regulate your speed so you can slow gradually or if necessary dig in with both toe stops and really scrub off speed. Wish I had this video when I was learning! You’ve gained another subscriber :-)

This Rad Now I have tried them they feel pretty good and I have learned some things, they just feel quite heavy and in some types of pavement they do not run very smooth, they are rather slow

@@vanessalasso9461 Good, I hope you stick with it! If you can replace the wheels with a good set of outdoor wheels, that can help (also chunky toe stops if the ones on the skates are plasticky and/or small).
