Once I was standing in Mansfield and the "train approaching" announcement came one. I was 3 feet away from a 141mph Acela set. The speed limit is 120 (no third track, platform passing restriction). Thus, my first Acela ever, in 2015, power car 2015 leading. I heard that they tested the sets up to 180mph. That would be interesting.

The Speed limit is 150MPH through Mansfield (And has been for over a decade), not 120MPH. Their are no restrictions for the Acela passing platforms.

The newer ACS 64 electric locomotive that runs on Amtraks Northeast Corridor from Boston to Washington, DC & it's Keystone Corridor from Philadelphia to Harrisburg, PA have improved the speed on those non Acela high speed trains.

Nice to see more Amtrak high-speed rail. I think most of those trains are in the Northeast, which is the only area that Amtrak makes any real profit. Part of the problem too is that the US railroad infrastructure is 150 or so years old and are perfect for freight trains and the older passenger trains, but high-speed passenger trains are too fast and too light and would derail on that first big curve. They really do need to expand it to the Southeast (eg Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee), which wasn't so populated 50 years ago. I'd absolutely love to ride from St Louis to New Orleans in half the time it takes to drive there without having to drive 2 hours to pick it up in Effingham, IL.

@Coasterfan2105- I did some research and came to find out that the Acela express doesnt reach top speed (150mph) it only reaches a speed of 84mph in between stops... Now im a huge fan of the VIA (and Amtrak) LRC... When doing testing with the Amtrak LRC it reached its top speed of 100mph inbetween stops.... Why did Amtrak turn down such a great engine that VIA had for years?

The Usa necesites massive electricification used for the tracks. Its the base of everything. 25kV AC is more interesting, then 3kV DC. Train routes cat A - Only HST (ICE, InterCity Express). Speed more than 250mph. Only passenger traffic. Categorly 2track Train routes cat.B - capacitable 2-3tr routes with stations for speed 100-140mph with local service, used also by freight trains. Train routes cat.C Local routes, for combination passenger/freight trains, max speed 50-90mph. 1-2 tracks. And all system integrated traffic - one ticket for one route in all of USA, zonal integration

people saying "america is too big and not dense enough to have HSR" are completely misinformed, American HSR wouldn't mean NYC to LA, it would mean important intercity routes that are currently car dependent. Texas triangle, pacific northwest northeast corridor etc. are the highly populated, dense metropolitan areas that can and will be served by HSR.
