“Tell her to give me 10 minutes” was easily the best line I’ve heard from a model railroader. While all these were cool to see at their top, and the AEM7 was definitely my top favorite, I would have loved to have seen a 999, if you have one, running on this layout next to the Hudson’s at top speed. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for the well done video. The Dreyfuss Hudsons were known for hauling the Century at speeds hitting 80 mph at times before the end of WWII when speed restrictions were put into place. The C&O Alleghenies that were equipped for passenger train service during WWII were known for hauling 30 plus heavy weight Pullmans at 65 mph. Those were either troop, hospital or POW trains. This has been documented in Eugene Huddleston's Allegheny, Lima's Finest. Your layout is looking great with all the changes you've done. Keep up the good work.

I also love the Dreyfuss Hudson, maybe it's also my favorite US steam engine, but then many of the streamlined Hudsons are so stunning to look at !! I think it looks great at 120 mph. Now what about the Milwaukee Atlantics, it was the officially fastest steam engine of the world in 1935 (for one year) with officially recorded 112.5 mph! They're said to have done 120 mph in revenue service, which was not recorded though. The Milwaukee F7 Hudson apparently also did 110 mph in daily services and even 125 once ...

I think the more streamlined the engines are, the faster they should go. What is the point in having a slow streamliner right? If you are going to have a slow train then you might as well get a shay or something with a flat front and a slow top speed.

A fun and interesting running session, Chris! It's amazing what the engineering and construction of these steam engines were able to achieve in speed and durability considering the weight they were tasked with hauling. Mind boggling! As for favourites, I'd pick the Dreyffus Hudson because of it's 'modern' design. Btw, did you know that Dreyffus designed the most popular desk top dial phone used in North America? It was a staple in homes and offices for many decades.

One thing to keep in mind with top rated speeds for the real thing is that it's likely only on straightaways, just like cars on roads speeds need to be brought down on curves. I remember a few years ago an Amtrak wreck the stated cause was they were running too fast through a curve, engineer didn't brake or let off his straight line speed. Looks cool though, especially the toaster (probably because anyone in the NE has likely seen them fly past that fast!)
@PhillyBagel
@PhillyBagel Жыл бұрын
You’re probably thinking about the 2015 derailment in Philadelphia. Due to being rocked, radio chatter about it, or both, the engineer unfortunately lost track of where he was. He thought he just passed Frankford Junction which is limited to 50 mph instead of coming up to it.

Really cool video Chris! Had to admit, I was cringing watching those big steamers going around that curved trestle at speed, just knew one of them was going for a ride! One time, I pushed my then new Scaletrains Rivet Counter BNSF C44-9Ws to hard on the club layout and laid them over on their side, so I was pretty nervous watching you pushing your equipment to the max! By the way, I haul crews for BNSF and I'm around trains on a daily basis, and in close quarters with them on numerous occasions too! Even at just 25mph (the maximum speed for the 2 main tracks at the yard in Thayer, Missouri) it looks like they're flying by when you're right next to the tracks! It's even scarier when you in certain areas on the Thayer Sub south end and the speeds jump to 60mph and you're only a couple feet from the tracks, talk about a wake up call!

Hey, just saw your video. Really funny 😄😄😄😄😄. The "pillows on the floor" and "the catching blanket" are highly unorthodox yet effective strategies for mitigating an eventual derailment 😄😄😄. You have really nice trains from different periods 👏👏👏👏👏. That Big Boy is a magnificent American 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲 engine!!!!! Do you know if all DCC controllers have a setting for the scale speed? Does Lionel have it? Thanks! All the best! Looking forward to your next videos.
