Judging by the high quality and quantity of material you produce on your channel for free, you are clearly not motivated by money. Other's would put this behind a paywall (as is their right to earn a living). I hope you understand the legacy to art you are leaving. The art of people all over the world will be improving ten-fold and more ... some of them can afford to pay you for your time and effort, many more would not be 'rich' enough to pay you. You may never really know how much you are impacting 'art' around the globe, but I'm certain it is huge!! Thank you 💚

Not sure how you manage to put out so many great videos so quickly. I seriously hope you will take some breaks so you won't burn out. 😅

I think it is important to stress what Stephen calls "the effect" is in essence the texture. That should remind us that "the effect" Stephen draws is Stephen personal take, i.e. it is his style. Therefore, don't just recreate the marks Stephen makes but study reference and create your own library of texture, i.e. your own style, and use that as reference for further drawings of your own.

I don’t use the word texture because so often it has clearly been understood as pattern, and applied as a static pattern (pretty much) across a certain outline-defined-shape. A focus on visual effect includes more than surface textures. It includes everything AS IT APPEARS IN THAT INSTANCE under whatever conditions the scene is in. So the effects of distance I find best understood as a visual effect, rather than a form of perspective. Perhaps thinking g texture could work if defined by a teacher and taught in a course quite specifically. But for the self/taught internet artist, the term seems to end up being interpreted as pattern, and not produce results that create realism. But you are right. Everything is ‘my take’. I don’t have an art degree. What i teach is all how I have come to understand and use in my own efforts to draw better. So because I want to capture a sense of realism in my drawings, it is a large focus of these efforts and therefore appears in my teaching a lot. 😀

Your point about not copying my marks (or anyone else’s) is very good. Learning to draw is always about understanding process and then choosing whether to use, adapt or ignore it for one’s own drawing goals. Thanks for your thoughts. 😀

@@stephentraversart Yes good point, language is often ambiguous and in informal setting like this, you are prolly better of using the term "the effect". However, I do think it is important to explicitly point out that drawing "the effect" is actually a fundamental visual element of art, i.e. the texture (or one can also argue the visual element of your "the effect" is just as well space and value). Anyhow, the point is, it is NOT optional to learn how to draw "the effect" if you want to learn to draw. As such, drawing "the effect", is just as fundamental skill to master as is the ability to draw lines, shapes, basic forms and values.

@@stephentraversart _"A focus on visual effect includes more than surface textures. It includes everything AS IT APPEARS IN THAT INSTANCE "_ (I suspect I am creating a straw man here, but I want to make a point which I think is important): In my opinion there is no such basic visual element of art which could be described as "as it appears in that instance". I'd argue, if such basic element existed, it would be impossible to capture any scene at all (you'd need that mythological skill of "talent", spoken about in the folk lore among laymen). Instead we HAVE TO build up "as it appears in that instance" from our understanding of the basic visual elements of art. That is what we, i.e. everyone, whether self-thought or not, is left with. The point is: understanding of the basic element is something anyone can learn, implying anyone can learn to draw whatever it is that "appears in that instance". And perhaps that is what you are saying too,but expressed differently? I.e. "the effect" is a combination of using all the basic visual elements such as lines, shape, form, space, values and texture (trivially, colours gets excluded when drawing with ink - and in fact value too, which has to be created as an effect/illusion as well).
