Grace I think you overestimate the impact of star power today. Nowadays not many people can sell a movie based on name alone, the movie star is pretty much dead besides a few big names. Blaming Jason Mamoa for the soft opening is weird.

I'd argue that there aren't any actors who can carry a movie by themselves. The older ones appeal to a smaller crowd, and the younger ones aren't proving they can yet. The "biggest" stars that people recognize are the ones cast in these underperforming franchises. The most reliable box office draw remains a recognizable IP (comic, game, book, etc.) that is hopefully filled with action sequences. Grace is right that the streaming apps have threatened opening weekends in a big way. It's a weird time.

The big difference between pre pandemic and post is definitely the streaming aspect. Not only can people wait to watch the latest film from home but there is a ton of content to consume while waiting. Its basically become its own release schedule. Grace while I absolutely adore your coverage of movies I do think you are missing out a vital factor as to why movies are not performing as well as they used to and that is the very bad cost of living crisis we are experiencing at least here in the UK 🇬🇧, going to the cinema has become more of a luxury recently because normal people are being so squeezed financially and traditional families who would normally flock to see The Little Mermaid won't be able to because of tough financial decisions they have to make

I think the underperformance issue may be coming from a lack of originality. There's too many sequels and franchises to the point that that's all there is when it comes to blockbuster entertainment, and audiences are just losing interest. This is why projects such as Mario are doing so well, as they're vastly different to the largely samey franchise content thats being churned out. There's not superhero fatigue, but overall franchise and sequel fatigue, evidenced by Fast X's underperformance

Agree with original post. If you had to wait a couple months just to pay a premium to see a movie at home, then you might be more inclined to see it in a theater. Seeing it for "free" so soon on a streaming service your family already has, just hurts the movie more than it helps the service.

@@sandal_thong agreed. More & more companies are going back to multi tier structure. But I still don’t think that’s enough. Avatar just recently went for available renting, that’s where blockbusters all should be. I ❤️ the movie theater, Marcus is the best & has reclining/heated/cooled seats(made for couples), you can bring blankets; there’s restaurants, a bar, etc. If all upgraded like Marcus has done & some others, I really think that would fix things too. No one wants to sit in an old pull down, makes you butt fall asleep AMC chair & pay $20🤯. I just don’t want the cinema to go the way of DVDs, VHS, movie stores😢. @@kevinstfort Interesting. Curious if you are you with AMC Theatres? If not, do you have an article that indicates it's $5/movie? My $10 mention to the studios from what I heard is the deal the studios accepted for the promotion (otherwise, they could refuse, and the feature would be AMC A-list excluded - for now, that is mostly Fathom Event movies because they did not agree to it). AMC makes a profit (makes up the difference) via concessions. (Wouldn't be surprised if concessions increased, when they started AMC A-list).

I think its wayyyy too early, to say Fast X is DOA, $320 globally is awesome, this movie will have legs, I’m seeing it two more times, one in 4DX. It made its budget back in one weekend and with Memorial Day looming, people will have the time to go see it. Not saying it will do a billion but it’s no where a loss. Plus this weekend in America was college graduation week.
@keefriff99

You can’t just say it made its budget back looking at gross numbers. You have to factor in advertising costs (a considerable amount not included in the production budget), plus the fact that the theaters take a percentage of that gross revenue. F10 may very well need to make $700-800 million just to break even.

I think there’s also a lack of advertising. I find I have to actively find out what’s on. The change in watching patterns means I’m less aware so casual viewers aren’t aware what’s coming out I believe. Streaming services don’t advertise movies that much

I want to add two reasons for less moviegoers: We are now used to not watch content at the same time because of all the streaming shows and streaming services anyway. If I don't know someone else who would enjoy a movie I am going to wait to watch it on my own in a few months. I do believe many visiters who just went with someone who wanted to see a film won't go nowadays.

I've stopped going to movie theaters altogether due to the exorbitant costs of tickets and concessions, which make the overall experience quite unpleasant. However, if there were an IPIC Theater nearby, I would definitely choose to attend screenings there. The 18 and over policy at IPIC ensures a more respectful audience compared to what one typically encounters in regular theaters.

Grace, it seems like you were implying that because Encanto was diverse, that The Little Mermaid might be ok. It’s not diverse movies that anyone has an issue with. Correct. Nobody has a problem with diversity in principle. Nobody has a problem with a black mermaid. That's a specious argument put forward by disingenuous people to quell criticism. People have a problem with changing the appearance of a character whom they didn't want to be changed.

Grace, how do you factor in what should be happening since box office scores are kinda all over the place since the pandemic recovery? How much of a bump should writers get in the strike if movies don’t produce. Should the executives be taking the cut for that since they are the ones taking the risks in making the content or will the content improve with better writing contracts? What do you feel is the right balance? Or do you feel the billion dollar expectations are just so unrealistic that movies should go back to subpar VFX and settle for more modest returns?

I don't know it is over there in the US, but over here in México, movie theater experiences are not good. People talk during the movie, they check their messages on the phone with the brightest screens ever, when entering the room they use the flashlights in their phones. I maintain that the last Fast movie helped push the notion that the franchise jumped the shark. The previous movies were already pushing the bar on the 'ridiculous' scale, but space travel? Driving off a cliff and swinging via wire? Im sure audiences have a certain endurance for the absurd, but sometimes you cross that line where audiences just stop taking you serious, which is a space you don't want to end up in as a franchise.
