Great timing! I'm working on a bid that requires tall flat, paint grade doors and I've been trying to investigate what material would be best. Thanks for your insight

These would be a good option although I do prefer using the regular MDF for doors. I find that the MDF to be flatter.

I use Medex for all painted projects. It’s great that it’s moisture resistant (just weighs a ton versus standard mdf). I also use the PlumaPly HDF for its advantage of screw holding.
@kendecost

Right. Like all product it has its pros and cons. Pluma Ply HDF is the actual name of the product were using as well. Combo core is what our supplier uses to identify it easier.

@@kendecost I wish I would've seen this two weeks ago. I'm in the final steps of machining for painted inside/out upper cabinets and I would've gone with that product over the B3 Maple Ply I bought. It's okay and it'll look good when I'm done but that Pluma Ply HDF is superior.

How do you feel about the MDF around water sources and for denting? Does the shop finish make a difference in the durability of MDF? In my local area, we struggle with site finish MDF doors not holding up to everyday kitchen use. All of our pre-finished lines typically use maple for their painted doors, so I have not been able to compare apples to apples.

You said you use Dominos to align face frames with the cabinet box and Lamello clam shell connectors to actually attach them. Are you gluing the face frames or just relying on the Lamello connectors to hold the face frame? Really enjoy your videos!

Nice one again Ken. I am glad you you show that drawer tracks need 3/4” long screws a s not 5/8” like most hardware supplier is trying to sell you. Do you ever use MDF light (not a trick question 😎)
@kendecost
@kendecost 3 жыл бұрын
For sure. One of the situations where you want a little extra bite on those screws. On occasion we will use lightweight MDF. I have found that its a bit more prone to damage.

@@kendecost same. The benefits aren’t big enough. It’s also rough when primed , so it actually takes more time to prime correctly.

Any thoughts on lightweight or ultralight MDF vs MDF? I prefer the lightweight sheets as they're much easier to handle, but not sure if I'm giving anything up by doing so?

What is the best option for mounting drawer fronts to drawer boxes?
@kendecost
@kendecost 3 жыл бұрын
Shoot! Knew I forgot something. Even mentioned it but never circled back to it. We use a shorter version of the screws we use to mount it to the wall. We drill a hole in the drawer box larger than the shaft of the screw but smaller than the head of the screw to allow to movement and adjustments.

Does HDF hold screws better, and where does one find it? None of the major home centers carry it.
@kleinisfijn
@kleinisfijn 3 жыл бұрын
Laminate flooring is made of HDF, that gives you an idea what type of material it is. It can be mounted with screws after pre-drilling, but you can't drive a screw in de side of a board without it splitting.

Home centers will never carry a product like that, you need to find a good lumber yard, or building supplies store in your area. They probably won't stock it, but they might be able to order it from one of their vendors for you.
